COURSE DESCRIPTION: A beginning website development course that introduces website project planning and design. Graphic techniques will also be discussed and practiced. HTML, CSS, and Adobe Dreamweaver will be used to design and develop web pages, which will include forms, tables, and cascading style sheets. Web languages used to develop Web sites will be discussed. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon Completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. Develop basic web pages and a functioning website.. Utilize the development environment of Macromedia Dreamweaver CS5. 3. Create Pages using HTML, Cascading Style Sheets and Image Maps. 4. Design a professional site utilizing text, images, and hyperlinks. 5. Understand and implement structure and industry standards. 6. Publish a completed site to a Web Server. 2 ADDITIONAL RESOURCES: Laptop computer, Adobe CS6 / Creative Cloud access METHOD OF INSTRUCTION: Class discussion, questioning, presentations, handouts, and whiteboard presentations will be used. Lecture will be from the text, but will include additional information; therefore, it is important to attend class. Lab assignments will be used to introduce the students to the software application. EVALUATION METHOD: Student will be evaluated on test and quiz scores, lab assignments, project scores, and class participation. Projects will be evaluated on design, completeness, clarity, documentation, timeliness, use of application software, neatness, and meeting of course and student objectives. Good attendance is crucial to success in this class. Students start with 50 attendance points. 3 points will be deducted for an unexcused absence. It is the student s responsibility to notify the instructor when an absence is unavoidable; in addition, the student is expected to take responsibility for making up any assignments. TESTING POLICY: NOTICE: There will be four exams. If a student misses an exam, arrangements for make-up are at the discretion of the instructor. The final exam will be comprehensive and will be given according to the regular exam schedule. Representative student work will be used as a part of SMC s on-going curriculum assessment program. OTHER COURSE EXPECTATIONS: This course will emphasize the use of Dreamweaver to create and maintain a Web site. Web site design and development theory will be reviewed. A Web site project will be assigned. The project will be discussed in class. Complete design and documentation will be required.

3 ACCEPTABLE USE OF PERSONAL COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY All phones, ipods, Black Berries, palm pilots, pagers, laptops and other technological devices including devices capable of taking photographs must be turned off or placed on vibrate mode and may not be brought our during class.. If you are expecting or receiving an urgent call, you are required to leave the classroom before answering. Violation of this policy will result in your removal from the classroom for the class period. Multiple violations of this policy will be referred to the appropriate dean for disciplinary action. Further details or ramifications of violations maybe found elsewhere in this syllabus. The instructor has the right to modify this policy to meet the needs of your course. HONESTY POLICY: Cheating or plagiarizing will absolutely not be tolerated at Southwestern Michigan College. Any student found cheating or plagiarizing material in any manner may be assigned a failing semester/session grade in this course. A second such incident while at SMC could result in suspension or expulsion from the institution. A student found in violation of this section of the syllabus will not be allowed to drop this course. PROFESSIONALISM POLICY : Students will be asked to present themselves in a positive and professional manner inside the classroom. The entire department will be requiring this of students in order to begin to prepare them for the workplace. Students should think of their classes like a job and instructors as their employers. DIVERSITY STATEMENT: TARDY - Students will not be allowed in class after the start of class. It will be up to the instructors to allow them into class at a break. ATTIRE Students should refrain from wearing revealing or tight clothing, hats, or other attire that would not be allowed in a normal professional business setting. CELL PHONES & PAGERS All cell phones should be turned off or put on manner mode before entering the classroom. Absolutely no calls should be taken during class time. VOCABULARY Students should refrain from swearing or using unprofessional language in the classroom. Also, a professional vocabulary should be adopted and used in class as they progress in their college careers. WEAPONS No weapons should be brought to class. OVERALL PROFESSIONALISM Students should begin to adapt an overall professional demeanor and attitude.
