I- Course Aims: To enable the student to be oriented with essential topics including: Micro- and macromolecules of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleotides and nucleic acids To enable the student to describe basic principles of molecular biology and protein synthesis To understand the basic biochemistry of vitamins, and enzymes To enable the student be oriented with the basic biochemistry of the hemoglobin and free radicals

3 II- Intended Learning Outcomes: II- A) Knowledge and Understanding: By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Mention definition, importance, chemical structure and classification of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins 2. Illustrate the mode of action and kinetics of enzymes and their role in the diagnosis of diseases 3. Illustrate structure and role of vitamins as coenzymes and point out diseases produced by vitamins deficiency 4. Describe the biological transport and cell membrane and their biochemical, clinical and laboratory importance 5. Mention definition, importance and chemical structure of steroids 6. Describe nucleotides, nucleic acids and gene concept 7. Mention DNA replication, transcription and post transcriptional modification of RNA. 8. Define genetic code and protein synthesis 9. Describe regulation ofgene expression and mutation 10. Describe mechanism of DNA repair, DNA damage and diseases related to defective repair 11- Describe genetic engineering and recombinant DNA techniques, animal and human cloning 12- Describe principles of gene therapy 13- Describe the structure of proteins of the extra-cellular matrix 14- Describe the immune system, structure and types of immunoglobulin 15- Mention definition, types, sources and effect of free radicals and antioxidants II- B) Professional Skills: II- B1. Practical skills: By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1.Identify laboratory reagents and instruments used in biochemistry laboratory. 2- Identify the physical and chemical properties of carbohydrates 3- Perform chemical tests to study the properties of lipids and fatty acid 4- Identify the physical and chemical properties of amino acids and proteins and estimation of total plasma proteins

4 5- Identify unknown solutions 6- Identify tests for recombinant DNA technology. 7- Identify methods for animal and human cloning 8- Identify techniques utilized in analysis of DNA, RNA 9- Perform tests important for determination of hemoglobin in blood sample. Interpret the general scheme to reach the correct identification of unknown carbohydrate, lipid and protein solution 2. Correlate causes, mechanisms and effect of diseases based on knowledge of carbohydrate, protein or lipid biochemistry or molecular biology 3. Interpret different tests for genetic engineering and recombinant DNA technology 4- Comment on techniques utilized in analysis of DNA and RNA. II- C) Communication & Transferable skills: By the end of the course, students should be able to: 1- Write reports and essay on the different scientific items in the field of biochemistry. 2- Report the biochemical results in printable sheets 3- Work in groups and team in laps 4- Use computer and internet to extract information and knowledge III. Polysaccharides(physical properties chemical properties) 2.Lipids chemistry: definition and classification, fatty acids (physical and chemical properties), triacylglycerols, phospholipids, glycolipids, steroids, 3. Proteins and neucleoproteins chemistry: amino acids (classification, physical and chemical properties), proteins (structure, classification, physical and chemical properties, four orders of protein structure), purines and pyrimidines, nucleosides and nucleotides 4. Enzymes: general properties, classification, purification, kinetic, inhibitors, regulation of enzymes activities, mechanism of action 5. Molecular biology: DNA structure and function, RNA types and function, DNA organization, replication and repair, RNA synthesis, processing and modification RNAs processing, protein synthesis, mutations, regulation of gene expression recombinant DNA technology 6. Vitamins: Types, structure, functions, deficiency manifestations and recommended daily allowance. 7.Free radicals and antioxidant: definition, sources, hazards, antioxidants definition and calcifications 8. Hemoglobin chemistry: heme structure, myoglobin structure and functions, hemoglobin structure and functions, types, hemoglobinoopathies 9. Immunoglobulins: structure, calcifications, functions, class switching 10. Xenobiotics: definition, calcifications, metabolism, toxic effects 11. Principles of physical chemistry: isomerism, expression of concentration, diffusion osmotic pressure, viscosity, surface tension, adsorption and elution, solutions, the concept of ph, buffers and buffering, acidosis, alkalosis III-B) PRACTICAL CLASSES 1. 6 IV. TEACHING AND LERNING M ETHODS: IV-A) M ETHODS USED: 1. Lectures (general and small group lectures). 2. Practical classes (small group teaching, practice of laboratory skills, AV aids) 3.MCQs (formative assessment) 4.Assignment and reports IV-B) M ETHODS FOR DISABLED STUDENTS: No special arrangements are available. V-C) TEACHING PLAN: Lectures: 5 lectures/week; one hour each between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. according to the current time table in general lecture halls. Practical classes and tutorials: The students are divided into 4 groups. Each group has a 2-hour practical class once per week. Students of each group are divided into 2 subgroups. Both subgroups rotate between tutorial class (the related subjects of the theoretical lectures with AV aids) and practical class. 7 department. VI. STUDENT ASSESSMENT: VI-A. ATTENDANCE CRITERIA: The minimum acceptable practical (and tutorial) attendance is 75%; students who fail to attend that percentage of activities will lose 5 marks out of the practical marks. Students need to attend at least 60% in order to attend for the final practical examination. VI-B) ASSESSM ENT TOOLS: Tool Written examination Oral examination Practical examination Purpose Assessment of knowledge and understanding Assessment of knowledge and understanding Assessment of practical and intellectual and general skills (check list) VI-C) TIME SCHEDULE: Formative examinations: one held in January and the other in April for all students. Those who don't attend the examination(s)for acceptable reason(s); their marks will be raised as a proportion from the final written examination score. Final examination: at the end of the academic year (May) for all students. The exam is re-held in September for those who fail to pass the final exam or postpone it VI-D) GRADING SYSTEM: Examination Formative examinations: January April Final examination: Written Oral Practical Marks allocated Total 150 The minimum passing score is 90 marks provided at least 36 marks are obtained in the final written examination. Passing grades are: EXCELLENT >85%, VERY GOOD 75-<85%, GOOD 65-<75% and

8 FAIR 60-<65%. FORMATIVE ONLY ASSESSMENTS Student knows his marks after the formative exam.
