2 POLAND HEART OF EUROPE population of over 38 million people which makes Poland the sixth most populous member of European Union Poland is the best known post-communist member: the Polish trade union Solidarity heralded the collapse of communism across Eastern Europe in the early 90 Leszek Balcerowicz (SGH graduate) carried out reforms from socialist-style planned economy into market economy Poland became a member of the EU on 1st May 2004 and was holding EU presidency in the second half of 2011.
