1 MAN 3801 Management of Small Business Course Syllabus & Meeting Agenda Spring 2010 Instructor: Norman S. Stern CRN: Office Phone: (239) Class Meets: M-W 11:00-12:15 PM Cell Phone: (239) Classroom: 1204 Lutgert Hall E Mail: nstern@fgcu.edu Credit Hours: 3 Office Hours: Mon-Wed 8:45-10:45 AM Department: Management Instructor Office Location: LH 3341 Required Text: Longenecker, Moore et al, Small Business Management, 14th edition, Thomson Publishing Company, Course Description: This course will focus on both the entrepreneurial aspect and continuing management of small businesses. We will generally define small business, for purposes of this course, to be geographically local, have fewer than 100 employees, and where one or a few individuals provide initial financing. The course will focus on leadership, decisionmaking, management, marketing, financial controls and other necessary processes to insure the successful start-up and long-term health of the small business enterprise. Teaching Method: Classes will consist of lectures and discussion. Ten cases are assigned in the Meeting Agenda for classroom discussion. Each student will prepare a one-page paper citing his/her answers to the questions at the end of each case. There are no right or wrong answers. It is your opinion that is important. Cases will be read, but not graded, nor returned to students. Each case that is handed in will be worth 5 points toward a student s final point score. Case papers must be handed in on the due date. The Instructor s records will be the only determinant of whether a case was handed in, so make sure that you keep a careful record. Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Understand what entrepreneurship is and how it differs from ongoing management of a small business. 2. Be able to analyze small business external and internal environments: competitors, customers, suppliers, legal issues, financing, ethical issues and social responsibility. 3. Understand and interpret business and economic indicators. 4. Demonstrate marketing, management and financial knowledge and skills required to page 2
2 operate a small business. 5. Critically examine the relevant issues of small business development leading to the success or failure of an enterprise. 6. Prepare a competition-class business plan for a new business created by the student. Term Project: Four-Person Student Teams will create a new small business idea and hand in a page competition-class Business Plan on April 22. A separate document will be provided to each student with the specifics of this project, along with Team Assignments. Each Team will prepare an 8 minute Power Point Presentation to be given orally to the class on April 14 & April 19. Examinations: There will be a Midterm Examination on February 24 and a Final Examination on April 26. Each exam will be composed of 100 multiple-choice questions. Makeup exams will be given only under extreme circumstances. Be there on exam days! Grading Criteria: Grading Scale: There will be five (5) components to your final grade: Two Exams points each 200 Written Business Plan* 100 Oral Business Plan Presentation* 100 Active Class Participation* 100 Assigned Case Papers points A 500 and above *Grade determined solely by my A subjective judgment. 3 Attendance/Absences: Class attendance is a requirement of the course. Only one (1) unexcused absence will be allowed. Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session. Any student caught signing the attendance sheet for another student will be in violation of the Honor Code and will be reported to the Dean of the College of Business. Late arrival to class is discourteous to the other students. Three (3) late arrivals will equal one unexcused absence. Excessive unexcused absences may result in a lower grade, at the Instructor s discretion. FGCU The Instructor will frequently communicate important information to students via the FGCU system. Therefore, it is an absolute requirement of this course that all students check their FGCU at least once daily. I forgot to check my is an excuse for absolutely nothing. Class Participation: A component of your grade is based on your participation in classroom discussions. Even though we have a lot of material to cover, there will be ample time for discussion Each student is urged to take part. Your successful role in class discussions will necessarily be a value judgment by me, so volunteer answers often. A good grade depends on active class participation. What is meant by active class participation? It means that you should raise your hand frequently to answer questions posed by the Instructor. Although you are not expected to know the correct answer all of the time, if you have prepared for the class, you should know the answer much of the time. All students will be called upon periodically, so you must participate. Why? Because in the business world you are not permitted to sit idly by and not participate. If your supervisor asks a question of you in a meeting, you are expected to respond. In this one aspect, our class will try to mirror the real business world as much as possible. Academic Behavior Standards and Academic Dishonesty All students are expected to demonstrate honesty in their academic pursuits. The university policies regarding issues of honesty can be found in the FGCU Student Guidebook under the Student Code of Conduct and Policies and Procedures sections. All students are expected to study this document which outlines their responsibilities and consequences for violations of the policy. The phone number is or TTY Student Observance of Religious Holidays All students at Florida Gulf Coast University have a right to expect that the University will reasonably accommodate their religious observances, practices, and beliefs. Students, upon prior notification to their instructors, shall be excused from class or other scheduled academic activity to observe a religious holy day of their faith. Students shall be permitted a reasonable amount of time to make up the material or activities covered in their absence. Students shall not be penalized due to absence from class or other scheduled academic activity because of religious observances. Where practicable, major examinations, major assignments, and University ceremonies will not be scheduled on a major religious holy day. A student who is to be excused from class for a religious observance is not required to provide a second party certification of the reason for the absence. Classroom Decorum: The classroom is not a place for social interaction. Students may not e mail, text or otherwise make contact with others. This includes gossiping with your neighbor. Laptops, PDA s, etc. may be used only for note taking. Prior Notification Responsibility of Students: No makeup will be allowed for any student who does not show up in class for a scheduled oral presentation, exam or any other assigned activity without prior notification to and approval of the Instructor. In such a case, the student will receive a grade of 0 for that assignment. It is recognized that a student may, for one reason or another, not finish the required work of the course and apply for a late withdrawal, or a grade of Incomplete, after the official final withdrawal date. The Instructor will not contemplate any change of grade or grade status in such cases, unless the student (or someone who speaks for the student) makes this request before the end of the semester. In such cases, the student or his/her page 5
5 representative, must offer proof to explain the reasons why the student is unable to complete the requirements of the course. The Instructor will then, in consultation with the Advising Office, determine if such a grade change is warranted. If a student does not complete one or more assignments of the required work and/or ceases attendance prior to the end of the semester without such prior notification, a course grade of F will be entered for the student. Study Assignments: lecture/discussion. Each student is given 6 chances to learn the required material: 1) Read the assigned chapter before the Agenda date. 2) Pay attention and participate during class 3) Listen to the review during the next class meeting. 4) Review the Study Guide when it is distributed. 5) Be present in class when the Study Guide is reviewed. 6) Using the Study Guide and highlighted passages you marked in the text, study for the exam on your own.
