School of Business Administration Academic Update Mission/Vision: The School of Business Administration at the University of Vermont prepares students to become responsible managers in a dynamic, interconnected, and complex, sustainable global economy. To accomplish this, we cultivate awareness of the importance of creating sustainable businesses that value ethical, social, and environmental responsibilities. We infuse innovation and leadership in our curriculum, and develop graduates who are skilled at identifying problems and opportunities, and who make decisions based on adept analysis. Our faculty strives to achieve teaching excellence, promote thought leadership, and advance management practice. Upcoming Goals/Exciting Projects: Undergraduate curriculum revised fall 2013, updated fall o Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with an Interdisciplinary Theme in one of three areas: Sustainable Business, Global Business and Entrepreneurship. o In addition, students are required to choose one of four concentrations: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and Business Analytics (optional for students who started in 2013 and 2014). o Both English and Psychological Science are now approved as minors. Film & Television Studies, Consumer & Advertising, Consumer Affairs, Community Entrepreneurship, and Pubic Communications are restricted minors; Sports Management minor is in its final stage of approval. o Professional Development Series 1 credit each of sophomore, junior, and senior years to align students with 4-year career plan and to promote and enhance career opportunities. Emphasis on Entrepreneurship Business Pitch Competitions, Family Business Initiative, Family Enterprise Case Competition, and Enactus (formerly Entrepreneurship Club). Case Competitions Hosting Global Family Enterprise Case Competition (FECC), January 14-16, Teams that participated in the 2015 FECC were from Canada, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Netherlands, USA, France, India, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. SEMBA (Sustainable Entrepreneurship MBA) launched fall 2014 o Develop the next generation of leaders who will build, disrupt, innovate and reinvent sustainable enterprises in a world that demands it.
o Requires a minimum of three years professional work experience. o 12 month full-time program taught through 4, 8-week modules. o Kalkin 110 serves as the primary learning space for the SEMBA program. o Goal is to provide a valued graduate school experience and to increase the number of students in our graduate programs. Increased numbers will help reach certain ranking criteria. o 17 new SEMBA students have committed to the fall 2015 cohort. o New Co-Directors: David Jones & Stuart Hart MAcc program (Masters of Accountancy) o Continues to receive strong interest from international students, predominantly from China. China accepts U.S. Accounting standards (while other countries do not). o Popular option for UVM graduates looking for a 4+1 option to achieve 150 credits hours and eligibility to pursue CPA licensure. o 30 students anticipated to enroll in MAcc program during year. o 75% first-time CPA pass (national average: 56.8%) o The 2014 Uniform CPA Examination: Candidate Performance published by NASBA reports The University of Vermont ranks 20th of the 256 medium-sized institutions' overall average pass rates. o 100% job placement out of MAcc: PWC, KPMG, McGladrey Staffing changes to increase efficiency of processes and to support the School s goals. o International Academic Advisor o Employer Outreach Professional o Two Development Officers o Program support, SEMBA (Sustainable Entrepreneurship MBA) o Program support, MAcc (Masters of Accountancy) Faculty hires to lead the Strategic Theme initiatives through curriculum innovation and industry outreach. Facilities will include an expansion of Kalkin Hall in approximately two years and look for exciting news in fall 2015 for a naming of the School of Business. Admissions Information: Total Enrollment* New FTFY* New TR* Fall Fall Fall Fall Fall Fall
* from OIR after add/drop data as of 07/17/15 Work collaboratively with the Admissions Office to bring in undergraduate class of approximately 200 FTFY students and 80 transfer students (which includes GGP and USPP). For fall 2015, of the 80 transfer students, 55 are matriculating from GGP and one is matriculating from USPP. Our overall enrollment trends are climbing with increased numbers of applications, lower admit rate for FTFY to manage overall enrollments. Do not anticipate growing much more than 1,000 students. High school candidates should meet the traditional admissions standards with four years of math. Ideally, the senior year math should be college-prep work Trig, Pre-Calc, or Calc. Taking courses in Statistics or Accounting is fine as long as it doesn t replace the college-prep math course. Students interested in learning more can schedule an individualized visit or phone call with a member of Student Services, studentservices@bsad.uvm.edu, (802) Important information for transfer students Admissions requires one semester of Calculus and one semester of Economics. Will make exceptions for strong transfer applicants. Students not admitted to Business, will have to opt in for second major choice. Refer to Gabe Rodriguez or Elizabeth Hamlin with questions. Do not accept upper-level transfer credit towards completion of BSAD requirements from institutions that are not AACSB accredited. However, these courses if eligible for credit can be applied as pure elective. Caution on using Transfer Guide course evaluations can and do change. The Transfer Guide is a wonderful resource, but does not substitute for an official evaluation. Earning credit can be different than satisfying a degree requirement. Exciting News (Anything 3 years back to 1 year forward is relevant ): Classes are taught by faculty or individuals with the highest relevant degree (graduate students do not teach BSAD courses). Access and interactions with faculty from day one. Professor Rocki DeWitt, former Dean (7.5 years) is now the instructor for the first semester Business course, BSAD 010 The Business Enterprise. Strong advising model. First-year students are professionally advised by a member of the Student Services team. Advisor specific to international students. Upper-class students are advised by faculty who teach and conduct research in their respective industries. All advisors are located in Kalkin Hall. o First-Year Interest Group (FIG): Cohort Learning Model
o Residential Learning Community (RLC): Two suites in the Living/Learning Center on Exploring Business centered around the three strategic themes of Entrepreneurship, Global Business, and Sustainability. o 12Twenty CRM to manage students career and co-curricular experiences and to extra data for career outcomes and rankings. Will move to a student input portal system by spring New Course Development: o BSAD 002, 102, 202 Professional Development Series o BSAD 009 Personal Finance o BSAD 288 Wall Street Honors Seminar (expanded to 15 students) i. This signature experience is by invitation only and is funded through the generous support of alumni and proud parents. In this program, students benefit from the experience of presenting to professional analysts on Wall Street (Morgan Stanley and Capital Group, for example). Graduates who participated in this seminar are now successful professionals on Wall Street, in Corporate Finance (example: GE FMP and Boeing), and locally in Vermont. Some have also chosen to attend graduate school and/or pursue their CFA licensure. o BSAD 296 Green Mountain Investment Fund i. The Green Mountain Investment Fund (GMIF) was created in November of 2013 with a gift in excess of $100,000 from Whit Wagner 78, president of Clear Brook Advisors, an independent investment firm with expertise in private investment partnerships focused on large wealth management firms, family offices and high net-worth individuals. Selected juniors and seniors will have the opportunity to propose securities for investment. A designated group of seniors will form the investment committee responsible for managing the fund. Recent graduates have gone on to the following companies Burton Snowboards Fuse Marketing MYWEB GROCER Dealer.com Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Google Financial Management Program at General Electric (GE) Financial Management Program at Boeing Accounting Associate at PWC Accounting Associate at KMPG
Accounting Associate at McGladrey Graduate School MAcc at UVM for CPA requirements, Law School, Sports Management, generally don t recommend immediate entry into MBA programs Teaching English Abroad Professional Athletes Other Relevant Information: Approximately 20-25% of the junior class will Study Abroad. This includes fall, spring, and summer programs. A few students will go for a full year (with careful planning and advising). Popular destinations include Vienna, London, Grenoble, Barcelona, Australia, New Zealand, South America, and China. Trying to encourage more students to study on exchange programs. Clubs & Organizations discuss industry trends, meet with professionals and alumni, and participate in trips to Boston or NYC for career networking. Each club has a faculty advisor. School of Business Clubs consist of: Accounting, Finance & Investment, Enactus (formerly Entrepreneurship), Marketing, SAC (Student Advisory Committee to the Dean), and Outreach (assists with campus and admissions outreach and yield). Campus Leadership: Business students are involved campus-wide in many leadership positions in Athletics, Admissions, Orientation, Residential Life, SGA, Greek Life, Class Council, Academic Support and Campus Tutoring, ALANA Student Center, Academic Class Integration: Faculty Research, Case Analysis, Team Projects, Alumni/Professional Guest Lectures, Honors College, Internship for credit, TA for credit. Technology: Team of three IT Staff who provide comprehensive support for all Business students, manage network, exchange, classroom integration, on-line processes, etc. Support user with software and hardware needs. Each Business student is enrolled in Microsoft Campus Software License Agreement ($75/semester fee). Access to both computer labs with free printing for majors and minors. Bloomberg Computer Lab, student computer labs offer dual-screen monitors, stock ticker, plasma screens throughout the building, SmartBoard, technology-class integration, virtual computer lab. Networking: Students have the opportunity to network with Board of Advisors and attend presentations through Leadership Speaker Series. For the fall 2012 semester, Charlene Begley, Senior Vice President at GE presented on campus. For the fall 2013
semester, John Dineen, President and CEO of GE Healthcare presented on campus. For the fall 2014 semester, Richard Beck, Senior VP of PepsiCo Global Operations presented on campus in addition, Cyma Zarghami, President of Nickelodeon presented on campus. For the spring 2015 semester, Gary Green, CEO of Alliance Building Services and Baseball Team Owner presented on campus (Hoffman Series): Internships are work experiences in a field relevant to a student s career interests. Internships are important for students because they offer real world work experience, differentiate a student on their resume, and give students relevant examples to talk about in job interviews. Approximately 75% of students will participate in at least one internship. However, nearly 100% of students have a job-related experience (positions within family business, hotel/hospitality industry, work-study, and life-style related jobs: waitress, golf caddy, nanny, etc.). Internships can be during the summer or the school year, and with local, regional or national companies. Summer Internships By Jon Reidel, July 12, 2015 One of Sanjay Sharma s primary goals when he was hired as dean of the School of Business Administration in 2011 was to increase the number of students completing summer internships. With only 30 percent doing so at the time, he set an ambitious goal of more than doubling that number. Thanks to a series of initiatives designed to refocus the business school s career preparation process as part of a Career Success Action Plan, the number of students landing internships in 2015 has reached 80 percent. With employers giving nearly twice as much weight to graduates work experience as to their academic credentials, according to a survey in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the increase couldn t have come at a better time. The primary drivers of the increase have been a new internship website, the hiring of an employer relations and outreach administrator to work in collaboration with UVM s Career Center, and additional funding for programs which encourage students to consider internships. These initiatives compliment the growing campus-wide efforts to promote internships, as noted in a 2014 Wall Street Journal article Wall Street Journal article. Many students in the business school are spending their summers at companies across the country in their respective concentrations of accounting, finance, marketing, and business analytics, among other disciplines including sales and communications. The following synopses provide a sampling of just a few.
Name: Laura Fiacco Hometown: East Greenbush, New York Company: Viacom International Media Networks (New York, New York) Title: Nickelodeon Channel & International Program Sales Marketing Intern Job duties: Creates and manages the editorial content and design layout of a bi-annual International Evergreen newsletter for Nickelodeon. Develops marketing materials; maintains key aspects of a business-to-business website; produces competitive reports and property analyses of competitors; and provides campaign and event support for Nickelodeon initiatives. What I like most about the internship: I love how hands-on my internship is and how I have actual responsibilities that are important to the company's success," Fiacco says. And working in the entertainment industry has its perks, she admits, like, meeting famous people and attending fun events. Name: Dina Clark Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri Company: EMC (Hopkinton, Massachusetts) Title: Customer Service Business Operations Intern on the Process Team Job duties: Shadows company professionals working with customer service programs and work with them to determine what to improve as the company moves to storing data in the cloud. What I like most about the internship: Using basic Microsoft programs in a more professional and technical way and learning new programs such as Visio. It is very interesting to see skills learned in the classroom directly translate into the work force, Clark says. It is a great company to work for, especially as an intern. They value their interns and demonstrate this by putting on frequent intern events and making sure that each intern walks away with valuable new skills and knowledge at the end of the summer. Name: Kaitlyn LaGue Hometown: Berlin, Vermont
Company: PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) (Boston) Title: Assurance Intern Job duties: Learns about the PwC Audit process through shadowing and hands on activities with three levels of employee mentors (associate, senior associate and partner) as they work with clients. What I like most about the internship: The people and the experience. My mentors have been fantastic in guiding me through my internship, what to expect, and helping me understand the purposes behind day-to-day action items," she says. The experience is absolutely eye opening, and shows how to use knowledge from classes in the real world. I find it so interesting to witness an audit in the health service industry. It also allows me to understand what Big Four accounting is really like, and I love it. Name: Peyton Leveillee Hometown: South Londonderry, Vermont Company: DigitasLBi (Boston) Title: Integrated Production Intern Job duties: Responsibilities focus on project management and include helping scope projects, staff teams, make timelines, schedule check-ins, and test ad units. What I like most about the internship: Being a part of the corporate culture of DigitasLBi. The company understands that for employees to do good work they need to be happy, so they are always trying to make your day better, Leveillee says. "I have been able to enjoy some pretty sweet perks such as bagel Fridays, a harbor cruise and tickets to Red Sox games. Name: Alicia Clark Hometown: Pawlet, Vermont
Company: Aldi (South Windsor, Connecticut) Title: District Manager Intern Job Duties: Rotates every two weeks to work with employees in different divisions including merchandising, staffing, supervision of policies and employee development and corporate strategy. What I like most about the internship: I love the ever-changing nature of the position. It is undoubtedly busy, but very hands on which makes the work very satisfying. And the internship is an exact match for Clark's career aspirations. At UVM I am studying business and nutrition in preparation for a career in the food business. The high volumes of the grocery business paired with everlasting demand keep the industry extremely competitive. I look forward to being a part of this competition, and plan on building on what I have learned in the classroom and the internship program. Name: Maggie Smith Hometown: Scarborough, Maine Company: Keurig Green Mountain, Inc. (South Burlington, Vermont) Title: Corporate Communications Intern Job duties: Leads media outreach campaigns for largest company-wide volunteer events in Vermont and Massachusetts. Responsible for drafting press releases, FAQs, compiling media lists, pitching news outlets, and writes internal and external content for the corporate website. What I like most about the internship: I've been able to work with people in marketing, community relations, innovation, and even the sensory lab Keurig Green Mountain has given me a ton of opportunities to grow and thrive. The internship, she says, has shown her the value of the range of classes and experiences she's sought out during her time at UVM. I've realized my biggest successes have come about by being hungry and willing to learn. The skills I've been able to apply over the course of the summer have been a big collaboration of my business classes, English classes, art classes, and experiences as a teammate and friend. Name: Ali McClure Hometown: Blue Bell, PA (Suburban Philadelphia) Company: Temple University Athletic Department (Philadelphia)
Title: Intern for Temple Owl Club Job Duties: Data analysis and research to identify future programs to increase awareness of the Owl Club, which promotes resources to enrich the lives of student-athletes. Collaboration with Temple employees and fellow interns for visual presentations for internal Owl Club leadership and incorporating messaging to attract new members. What I like most about the internship: "Being able to implement the theory I have learned in the UVM classroom to a "real world" experience. I am on the swim team at UVM, so I am familiar with teamwork. The Owl Club has a team feel, and the Temple leadership is eager to share their experience and guidance to assist me in completing my tasks and learn firsthand from the administration's point of view of athletics." Getting an inside look at the student-athlete experience at more than one university (first UVM, now Temple) has piqued her interest, she says, in exploring the field after graduating in 2017.
