1 Andrew Tinnish Bachelor of Recreation & Leisure Studies ( 99) Bachelor of Sport Management ( 01) Assistant General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays Department of Sport Management
2 Our department highlights Brock University is the only university in Canada granting a specialized Bachelor of Sport Management (BSM) Honours degree, and it is one of Brock University s fastest growing programs. Established in 1996, the Department of Sport Management has grown to 11 faculty members and 3 staff. In , a total of 617 students were enrolled in the 4 Year (Honours) BSM degree. As part of the 2014 Winter Tour, Brock University hosted a pep talk from the Toronto Blue Jays with over 250 Sport Management students in attendance. On the panel were major league players and personnel that included Brock Alumnus Andrew Tinnish (RECL 99, SPMA 01), who is the Assistant General Manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. In the Department of Sport Management, we integrate and apply knowledge from the social and management sciences and from the world of business to study all organizations involved in the sport industry, including public, nonprofit, and commercial organizations. Our program focuses on the application of theory, principles, and practices of management and business to the sport industry. There is a strong emphasis on connecting theory to activities of the industry, through guest speakers, case studies, use of media, and planned experiential learning opportunities in the field. The Department of Sport Management provides many opportunities for students to explore a range of dynamic career opportunities available in sport. Our students are prepared for careers in areas such as management, marketing, public relations, promotions, event and facility management, communications, human resource management, financial management, economics, and sport analytics in a variety of public, nonprofit, and commercial organizations. Our commitment to integrity, respect for diversity and inclusiveness, and the importance and influence of sport and sport business to contemporary society is the foundation for imaginative and innovative scholarship in teaching, research, and service. 1
3 Who we are Our faculty members are leading scholars whose commitment to learning is translated to the classroom and experiential learning opportunities for students in mentoring them to become future sport leaders, managers, and innovators through expertise in finance, brand management, community development, interorganizational relationships, sport for development, sport law and dispute resolution, sport consumer and fan behaviour, leadership, volunteer management, sport policy and governance, organizational analysis, facility and event management, environmental sustainability, and sport analytics. Faculty Chris Chard, Associate Professor Laura Cousens, Associate Professor Hilary Findlay, Associate Professor Craig Hyatt, Associate Professor Shannon Kerwin, Assistant Professor Lisa Kikulis, Associate Professor & Department Chair Cheryl Mallen, Associate Professor Kevin Mongeon, Assistant Professor Kirsty Spence, Associate Professor Julie Stevens, Associate Professor Lucie Thibault, Professor & Interim Associate Dean Staff Emily Allan-Dakin, Experiential Co-ordinator Stephanie Brooks, Undergraduate Program Co-ordinator Charlene MacLellan, Administrative Assistant Experiential Learning A crucial aspect to learning is providing students with opportunities to apply their knowledge throughout their degree. This is achieved through a network of community partners that facilitate experiential learning opportunities for students in the form of field work placements, internships, and communityclassroom partnerships. In , the Department of Sport Management s experiential learning included: 105 Community Experiential Learning # of Student engagements in the community 714 In spring 2014, students are interning in a variety of organizations such as: Toronto 2015 Pan/Parapan American Games Organizing Committee, Hamilton Tiger-Cats, Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Basketball Development, Golf Association of Ontario, Toronto Blue Jays Baseball Club, Right to Play, Ontario Basketball, Honda Indy Toronto, Sail Canada, Welland Sports Tourism Alliance, and Ontario Summer Games Number of student hours 37,730 Through the Sport Management program I was part of a trip to Peru, helping to develop a sport for development workshop designed for local community members. 4 Our program overview This program has provided me opportunities to get involved with sport management student council, studying a semester abroad, along with exciting placements and internships. Nicole Greco, Sport Management, Class of 2013 Alumni network and careers The Department of Sport Management has established a strong network of alumni who facilitate networking opportunities for current students. Our Alumni Board liaises regularly with the Department regarding current issues and events in the sport industry. Our alumni careers include: General Manager (Soo Greyhounds, OHL Hockey Club) Manager, Community Marketing and Player Relations (Toronto Blue Jays) Director, Ticketing (FIFA Women s World Cup Canada, 2015) Sr. Vice President (Wasserman Media Group) Manager, Scouting (Edmonton Oilers, NHL Hockey Club) Brand Manager (Nike Golf) Director, Corporate Partnerships (Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment) Sport Development and Events Manager (Squash Canada) Year 1 Introduces students to the field of sport management, the sport industry sectors (public, nonprofit, commercial), the principles of business, and professional engagement for the sport industry. Year 2 Develops this foundation in sport management through courses in sport law, sport policy, management concepts for the nonprofit sector, organizational behaviour, finance, and research design and evaluation. A highlight of the second year is Sport Court, where students prepare and defend sport-related legal cases in mock court. Year 3 Provides some breadth to understanding sport management and its application through courses in event management, human resource management, financial management, and marketing. Students gain exposure to the applied research practices involving quantitative and qualitative data. Opportunities to apply sport management principles and theoretical knowledge are provided through a work placement with Brock University s Athletics, intercollegiate teams, and local special events through an 80 hour experiential learning opportunity. Year 4 Provides students with greater possibilities to shape their program. Depending upon their major average, students may opt for an internship focus gaining industry experience and building career contacts through a 440 hour internship in the sport industry within Canada or internationally. Alternatively, students may opt for a course-based final year where they explore the breadth of specialized courses in topics such as law, policy, economics, sponsorships, analytics, and also gain applied experiences through field courses such as major games and sport for development. Students may also opt for a research-based focus where, in consultation with a faculty advisor, they delve deeply into issues and problems of interest in the sport industry conducting an in-depth research project or thesis. 3
