New Wellness Center Provides Holistic Approach to Health According to the World Health Organization, wellness is...a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. has embraced this definition with the launch of our new Wellness Center. The goal of this endeavor is to create a comprehensive initiative that fosters an overall wellness culture and utilizes all available resources. At, wellness includes the sports and activities offered in Recreation, the enrichment and educational elements of Quest and Fine Arts, and the health and & nutrition initiatives of Dietary. By collaborating together, our departments will be able to better address the needs of each Participant, young and old, said Wellness Manager Kreig Alm. On January 28, Participants, staff, and volunteers celebrated the kickoff of the new Wellness Center in the gymnasium. Everyone was able to participate in fun fitness contests such as a sit and reach test, a shuttle run and raffles while learning about the upcoming wellness initiatives. As part of the program, each month will feature a wellness theme to educate and inform Participants and staff. Special events will be held and articles will be included in our publications in order to convey a unified message. (Continued on page 3)

2 2 Volunteer for Popcorn Days Our 7th Annual Popcorn Days is scheduled for Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2. Volunteers are needed in storefronts and intersections throughout the north and northwest suburbs of Chicago to collect donations on behalf of. Bags of delicious popcorn, once again generously contributed by The Popcorn Factory, will be offered to donors in appreciation of their support. All expenses associated with Popcorn Days are underwritten by an anonymous donor thus 100% of funds collected directly support the valuable programming at. Last year, Popcorn Days raised over $31,000 and this year s goal is $40,000. With your help, we can raise even more! Volunteers are the key to making this two-day event a success. The more volunteers we have collecting donations, the more money we can raise to provide life enriching opportunities for the remarkable men and women we serve. For those of you who cannot commit to those days, please consider holding a Popcorn Day (or Week) at your place of business or other establishment you frequent. We will supply you with the popcorn and a donation canister, and you simply place the popcorn near your desk or other high-traffic area in your workplace. You can decide the best timeframe that works for you. There is no cost to you just warm smiles and charitable hearts. Please contact Elaine Zielinski , or sign up online at From the President and CEO s desk... As our New Beginning has become a reality, one of the things that has and will continue to serve us well as we work to meet the needs of all our Participants - older, younger, and everyone in between - is our extensive array of day programs. In 2001, long before there was any thought to a New Beginning, we made a commitment to assure every Participant had numerous options to learn, hone skills and continue to grow, with a goal to improve the quality of their lives. Our Quest enrichment program has grown to offer 200 classes annually for Participants of all ages on a wide variety of topics. The program and its offerings evolve as staff works to create classes that recognize and meet changing interests and needs. At the center of these offerings is our Fine Arts program that taps creative talents in many areas including music, drama, dance, song, and painting/ drawing, an annual musical production and a traveling choir. Our new Wellness Center offers comprehensive personcentered programming for all Participants that includes aspects of fitness, nutrition, physical needs, addressing conditions such as obesity, and emotional health. Choices include a variety of individual and group fitness activities with equipment modified to their needs; our now ten Special Olympics sports that offer individual and team competition; weight training; and physical therapy. For those with low physical or cognitive skill levels, we have added a Motor Activities Training program with tasks designed to improve those skills. Our Healthy Adventures class introduces Participants to the many opportunities in the community to experience wellness-related activities. Nutrition education is designed to help Participants understand and meet their individual dietary needs with classes such as Be Well and Mission Slimpossible. Our growing J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) Program, designed for those who can no longer work, assures their day includes options for exercise, bike riding, arts and crafts, and trips into the community. A new Daily Activities program gives others an alternative to spend their days in a nonwork environment by providing stimulating group activities. Many Participants work in the community, either individually or in groups with staff support. Campus employment options include work in one of our five businesses, on grounds, or in our offices or other buildings. Together with Lambs Industries, Participants have the flexibility of choosing a work environment that best suits them. So, our New Beginning offers a solid base of daily activities upon which to build. Because of the wide disparity of ages and interests of our Participants, our goal is to continue to add features and/or create new offerings that are geared to individual needs. None of these endeavors, however, comes without a cost. Although many do not qualify for government funding, we are committed to do everything in our power to preserve them. We see it as an investment in the men and women we serve - one we hope you will continue to support. After all, quality is the most important component to the lives our Participants have enjoyed at, and is largely responsible for the longevity they enjoy today. What better investment can there be? Please consider a gift to today. Sincerely, Dianne M. Yaconetti

3 (continued from cover) We want the ideas to be integrated into the whole culture of, so we are also educating the staff each month and encouraging them to sign up to lead an exercise session with the Participants, said Dietitian Darlene Holop. In addition, the continual Healthy Lambs exercise challenges serve as motivating factors to encourage the men and women to stay active. In the month of February, the fitness challenge was to have 50 people exercise each day! A zumba class is also now available for all who are interested and new fitness equipment will be added throughout the year. Our 10 Special Olympics sports will continue to serve as a challenging and competitive component for our Participants. Each month Wellness Days, open to all, will highlight the month s theme and will focus on specific residences in order to personalize the information. Some themes throughout the year will be: Aging Gracefully, Proper Hydration, Diabetes Awareness and Stress Management. On February 11, a gymnastics instructor visited our campus to help lead an ability sensitive exercise class for the month s Participant doing sit and reach test Dietitian teaching about healthy foods theme of Sports & Activities. Additionally, Participants were able to take part in a karaoke event that same evening, which allowed them to show off their singing talents. Because March is National Nutrition Month, our theme will be Nutrition. As part of the activities planned, a Dietitian from Jewel-Osco led an interactive educational session to teach Participants more about healthy eating. Year-round nutrition education will also focus on interactive cooking classes to help Participants learn to prepare meals that meet individual dietary needs. In addition to the current Be Well class, our Dietitian has added a class called Mission Slimpossible modeled after Weight Watchers and including food journaling, portion control and an overall support system to help achieve wellness goals. Another new offering, Healthy Adventures, is designed to take Participants into the community to enjoy wellness related activities such as rock climbing, yoga, indoor bocce and visits to local health food stores. Our Wellness Center allows Participants to more easily incorporate healthy practices into their everyday lives. From new equipment, to new classes, to special events, it assures that our men and women have the opportunity to experience the highest quality of life no matter their age or disability. Members of the Rogan family are among those whose lives have been impacted by their experiences at. For years, Ed Rogan and his family visited. He frequently brought his parents for lunch at on their way to visit a close relative in a nearby hospital. Those lunches turned into many family holiday celebrations at the restaurant, a tradition that spanned generations and included many members of his family. For years, Ed searched for an appropriate way to honor his parents and other late relatives. When he read about our new Tribute Garden, he had finally found just the right opportunity - something that was an important part of their lives. So, he became the Title Sponsor of the project that is now called The Rogan Tribute Garden. Their involvement has been a catalyst in reuniting many of their family members throughout the country, and the entire family will be present for the Tribute Garden s dedication in the spring. The Rogan Tribute Garden will be something that will enhance the campus, and make a wonderful addition to be enjoyed by our visitors as well as the men and women we serve. It will also become a perpetual fundraising endeavor to support the lifeenriching programming for people with developmental disabilities for which is known. A number of the Tribute Garden s naming opportunities have already been fund since the project was initiated and many remain available starting at $500. They offer a unique way to honor or memorialize friends and family, as has been the case for the Rogan family, and include a wide variety of specific areas, seating, pathways, wall plaques, objects and plants. The Rogan Tribute Garden will be dedicated in the spring of 2015 with a special reception. To view all of the available Tribute Garden naming opportunities, visit 4

Whether they work in the community, in a business, in one of our areas on campus, or at Lambs Industries, they all deserve the opportunity to learn new skills and gain a sense of accomplishment. This past year we have secured a number of new community jobs for several Participants, and we continue to make connections with the promise of job placements in the future. Most recently, Maggiano s has employed seven of our Participants to roll silverware each week at their new Vernon Hills location. Another Participant was hired as a bagger at the new Trader Joe s in Libertyville, and yet another was hired at Chick-fil-A in Vernon Hills. All are doing well in these new positions! In addition, through Goodwill Industries, other Participants are working at the Great Lakes Naval Station. Sedgebrook, an employer for several years, has recently hired additional Participants. We appreciate the support of these companies. Help us spread the word in the community about the hard work and talents of our men and women! Additionally, Lambs Industries is always looking for opportunities from businesses who can benefit from our packaging and assembly services. For more information please call In recent months our sports teams have had exciting new opportunities to showcase their many athletic skills! This year, our MATP program was officially recognized as a Special Olympics sport in the region, and we held our first competition in December where our Participants were able to present their new skills and compete for medals for their achievements. Special Olympics representatives were impressed because the program reaches a new field of athletes. Congratulations to the ten Participants who competed in December! All of the competitors won medals in bowling which is a team sport. They also competed individually in balance skills, throwing, volleying, kicking and batting. The Motor Activities Training Program was developed in order to help Participants with low physical or cognitive skills learn fundamental athletic skills within a safe environment. MATP aims to develop motor skills with tasks such as pushing a ball or stepping across a low bar. Many of these athletes have physical disabilities, as well as learning disabilities, so the program is set up to enable each Participant to engage in appropriate recreational activities geared to their level of ability. Additionally, throughout the past year our basketball teams have been invited to the Carthage College basketball games and were able to meet the college team. As a result, the Carthage athletes formed friendships with our Participants and on February 17, our team was asked to play for the spectators during the halftime show! Following the game, both teams enjoyed dinner together to celebrate the exciting game night. Wellness Specialist Kady Magnuson was also invited to speak on public radio station WGTD about the / Carthage College partnership and to draw awareness to s programs! Thank you Carthage College for this partnership! 6
