Girls on the Run - Sierras 2018 Strategic Plan

Overview The Girls on the Run - Sierras strategic plan creates a collaborative roadmap that drives Board and staff decision making and moves the organization towards the mission, vision and goals of the organization. Annually the Board updates the Plan based on trends, needs and opportunities in order to ensure the road map is relevant in an ever changing world. Organization of the Plan The Plan is divided into strategic focus areas and within each focus area is a set of goals and objectives. In addition, an Implementation Plan has been created that outlines the specific actions that need to be taken under each goal. Following are the five strategic focus areas of the Plan: GOTR-Sierras Strategic Focus Areas 1. Support Inspired, Committed, Effective Board of Directors + Committees 2. Build Funds to Sustain Long-Term Health 3. Increase Awareness + Reputation of GOTR-Sierras in Serving Health + Well-Being of Girls 4. Grow + Improve Programs + Access to Programs 5. Build Organizational Capacity to Serve More Girls 2

About Girls on the Run Established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina, Girls on the Run provides girls in 3rd through 8th grades with tools to help them embrace their strengths and navigate their life experiences. This curricula is the heart of the program. Girls on the Run serves over 168,000 girls annually in over 225 cities across North America. It has 55,000 volunteers and has hosted 333 5K events. Our 10-week long programs are designed to inspire girls to define their lives on their own terms by encouraging positive emotional, social, mental and physical development through exploring beliefs around challenges and experiences girls face at this age. Along the way, they make friends, celebrate what makes them unique and discover who they are and what s important to them, develop skills and strategies, and build confidence. Additionally, they practice teamwork and relationships building, and positively connecting with and shaping the world. The cornerstone of our programs is physical activity. Physical activities in the form of games are integral to our programs because they encourage appreciation of fitness and the cultivation of healthy lifestyle habits. Themes such as body, brain, heart, spirit, and social connection drive our activities. We celebrate completion of the program with a non-competitive, fun 5K run which serves as a tangible accomplishment and a framework for setting and achieving life s goals. 3

About Girls on the Run-Sierras Girls on the Run- Sierras (GOTR-S) was established by Council Director Jennifer Bossin and the founding board of directors in Truckee, California in After the first team of 18 girls at Glenshire Elementary school, GOTR-S brought the program to all North Lake Tahoe and Truckee elementary and middle schools in Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. In 2010 GOTR-S hired its first paid Executive Director and expanded its territory into the neighboring state of Nevada. Incline Elementary school was the first program in the Washoe County School District. In 2011 GOTR-S added South Lake Tahoe to its service area by adding the first of four elementary schools in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District. Having reached full market saturation for all elementary public schools in the 3 counties around Lake Tahoe, the board approved the strategic plan to incorporate all of Washoe County into the service area. GOTR-S continued to offer a spring program in the Lake Tahoe region and launched the first Reno program in fall Since this strategic decision GOTR-S has grown steadily in Washoe County from 84 girls in 2012 to 124 in 2013, 184 in 2014, and 221 in 2015 while program enrollment in Tahoe remained consistent between 95 and 130 girls. Thanks to the support of the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation GOTR-S became a resident of the DWR nonprofit center in Incline Village in 2013 and opened its Reno office in

Committed to Serving ALL Girls We are committed to bringing our program to girls, regardless of socio-economic status; 40% of girls in our program come from low income families that qualify for the Free and Reduced Lunch program with a goal of reaching 60% by The actual cost to provide the program is $250 per girl. The standard program registration fee is $175 ($5 per hour plus $25 for the 5K registration). Low income families who qualify for the Free/ Reduced Lunch Program pay $20-$40 or 1-2 dollars per 1.5 hour session. GOTR-S subsidizes all program participants but provides a larger subsidy for low income families. 5

Growing + Positioned to Serve 500 Girls by In 2015, GOTR-S is serving 344 girls in Reno and Lake Tahoe with the goal of serving 500 by Fiscal Year
