1 Preserving History...Connecting Generations for 35 Years Volume XXIII Number 2 March-April 2013 WORK BEGINS ON NEW LIBRARY WING W ork has begun on the development of a new wing to the AFGS library. Once completed the additional space will result in a doubling of the floor space of our library. The space previously was used to conduct genealogy-related classes and other activities. It once served as the dining room for the former First Universalist Church. Much of the work is being done by AFGS members. The new wing is expected by be completed in the fall. The new wing will house holdings that will be moved from the existing library and the society s computer center will also be relocated to the new space. New computer terminals will be added to the existing stations. The expansion is expected to result in easier access to the society s holdings in both wings. With the construction, society classes and meetings are now being conducted on the first floor. Future plans call for the remodeling of the first floor rest rooms and the addition of more equipment to better facilitate the society s educational activities. New wing preparation. Worn out tiles have been removed from the floor space in the new library wing. Work is expected to be completed in the fall. JOIN THE DAUGHTERS OF THE KING CELEBRATION T his year marks the 350th anniversary of the arrival of a group of women from France who are known as Les Filles du Roi, or Daughters of the King. Nearly everyone of French Canadian ancestry can trace their lineage back to at least one of the approximately 800 French women who immigrated to New France between 1663 and AFGS is joining in the celebration by encouraging members and friends to document their connection to any of these filles du roi. Those with connections to these women will have the opportunity to create a straight line chart connecting them to the king s daughter. All submissions will be checked by the AFGS Research Committee. Individuals who participate must pay a nominal fee and will receive a certificate and Daughters of the King commemorative pin. Details about this commemorative program are enclosed with the newsletter mailing or are available online at

2 Page 2 AFGnewS March-April 2013 AFGS PUBLICATIONS DUE FOR FACELIFT? he Society s member publications,,afgnews and T Je Me Souviens, may sport a new look in the future. Both publications are being studied for possible format redesign. The Society has recruited members from around the country with writing and publication experience to assist with the editorial content and layout. Options under consideration include dropping the printed version of the AFGnewS and going to an online only newsletter. Feedback the Society has received indicated that in this information age it makes little sense to distribute news once every two months. A switch to e-briefs would be distributed on a more timely basis rather than waiting for 60 days or more. Another possibility is to combine some of the features of a newsletter with the Je Me Souviens. The format would change to more of a magazine style that would include more columns and interaction with readers such as a Letters to the Editor section and the opportunity for members who have hit a brick wall with one of their family lines to seek assistance from members with the same line. The publication would still contain stories with a French Canadian focus and how to articles specific to French Canadian genealogy. If the JMS is switched to a magazine format, it would be about 40 pages but published quarterly instead of twice a year. Although the newsletter may be converted to a digital version, there are no plans to convert JMS to that format. What are your thoughts? The Society is seeking input from its members and friends regarding our publications. Your opinion counts and any suggestions about ways to modernize our publications both in format and content would be appreciated. Send your comments to [email protected]. The AFGS Booth was a big hit during the New England Regional Genealogy Conference (NERGC), which was held April at the Radisson Hotel in Manchester, N.H. The Society is one of the sponsoring members and provides volunteer hours and a guest speaker at the conference, which is held every two years. The next conference will be held in Providence in SOCIETY HOSTS CABANE À SUCRE FUNDRAISER FEBRUARY AND MARCH SPLIT THE POT WINNERS C ongratulations to Marie-Therese Arsenault of Hopkinton,, winner of the February Split the Pot drawing, and Pierre Duval, of Portsmouth, RI, the March winner. AFGS will continue the monthly split the pot drawings. You can sign up for an entire year s drawings beginning in June. Details on the flyer enclosed with the newsletter mailing. For our online readers, read the details in the What s New section of our web site. Fleur de Lis provided the entertainment during the annual Cabane à Sucre (Sugar Shack) fundraiser on April 13th. More than 100 members and friends enjoyed dancing to traditional French Canadian tunes. Proceeds benefited the AFGS Franco-American Heritage Center.

The lending library allowed members to borrow microfiche of various vital records. Microfiche is older technology and readers are become scarce. AFGS has stopped selling the lending library catalog and will discontinue the lending library permanently on June 30, HOW IT ALL STARTED Submitted by Lisa Anderholt In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she was often called Amazon Dot Com. And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel so far from town to town with thy goods when thou canst trade without ever leaving thy tent?" And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?" And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you who hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)." Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were a immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever having to move from his tent. To prevent neighboring countries from overhearing what the drums were saying, Dot devised a system that only she and the drummers knew. It was known as Must Send Drum Over Sound (MSDOS), and she also developed a language to transmit ideas and pictures - Hebrew To The People (HTTP). And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Sybarites, or NERDS. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to that enterprising drum dealer, Brother William of Gates, who bought off every drum maker in the land. And indeed did insist on drums to be made that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks. And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others." And Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or ebay as it came to be known. He said, "We need a name that reflects what we are." And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham. And because it was Dot's idea, they named it YAHOO Dot Com. Abraham's cousin, Joshua, being the young Gregarious Energetic Educated Kid (GEEK) that he was, soon started using Dot's drums to locate things around the countryside. It soon became known as God's Own Official Guide to Locating Everything (GOOGLE). That is how it all began.

5 350 th anniversary of the arrival of the King s Daughters "Are You Descended From A Fille du Roi?" IT S A CELEBRATION This year marks the 350 th anniversary of the arrival of the King s Daughters, or les filles du roi, in Quebec. They emigrated to New France between 1663 and 1673 as part of a program sponsored by Louis XIV. The program was designed to boost Canada s population both by encouraging male emigrants to settle there, and by promoting marriage, family formation and the birth of children. While women and girls certainly emigrated to New France both before and after this time period, they were not considered to be filles du roi, as the term refers to women and girls who were actively recruited by the government and whose travel to the colony was paid for by the King. The title King s Daughters was meant to imply state patronage, not royal or even noble parentage. Most of these women were commoners of humble birth. Almost every person of French-Canadian descent can claim at least one of these incredible, young women in their heritage. AFGS is inviting you to celebrate this anniversary with us. Here is what to do. 1. Send us a straight line chart starting with you and ending with your fille du roi. (A sample straight line chart and a list of the Daughters of the King are included in the mailing.) You must include the date and place of each marriage. 2. We will send you a specially designed lapel pin identifying you as a descendant and a certificate with your name as well as the name of the woman from whom you descend and a folder to hold your certificate. 3. For members of AFGS, the cost is $15.00 for the first certificate you order. As many of us have more than one fille du roi in our line, you may order certificates for other Daughter s of the King for $10.00 each. These additional certificates will not be accompanied by lapel pins unless $15.00 is paid. 4. Non AFGS members may participate but the cost will be $20.00 for the first certificate (with pin) and $15.00 for each additional certificate (without pin). 5. We will check each straight line for accuracy. 6. The charts will be bound in a book for the library and the names of the Daughters of the King will be displayed at the library with the name of the AFGS member descending from each Daughter. Members will be invited to attend a celebration at the AFGS Franco-American Heritage Center.
