Become a member of La Boîte Jaune and support 2 great causes! Handicap International Canada Internal Newsletter February 2008 Editorial Handicap International (HI) Canada is proud to invite you to read this first edition This quarterly newsletter aims to be a stimulating and interactive source of information for our members, donors and collaborators. In this first edition, our most important achievements of 2007 will be presented. Please do not hesitate to send your comments! This newsletter should be considered as a work in progress in order to inform you regularly about our activities, while reflecting on our concerns and priorities. Thus, your contribution is helping us to continue our mission in favor of people with disabilities around the world. Thank you again for your commitment and we wish you a good reading! Nancy De Graff Director Handicap International Canada In this newsletter The rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, March 1st, 2007 Our projects and our team The pyramid of shoes, September 2007 The meeting with ERAI & the evening with our members, May 2007 The symposium in Ottawa, December 2007 The rally on Parliament Hill in Ottawa March 1st, 2007 This event coincided with the 8th anniversary of the Ottawa Treaty implementation and the Canadian Landmine Awareness Week (February 25th to March 3rd). For the occasion, Handicap International Canada participated to a rally in front on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on the 1 st of March Our organization also held an information booth jointly with Mines Action Canada,. During the event, various participants presented their viewpoints on landmines and cluster bombs. Nancy DeGraff, director of Handicap International Canada took the opportunity to speak about the humanitarian impacts caused by cluster bombs. She also took the time to present the main actions of our organization in Canada and around the world. Following her presentation, other representatives of organizations such as Human Rights Watch, Norwegian People s Aid and Landmine Action UK made their presentation. Hence, the event was considered a success! 1
Our projects and our team In 2007, we were responsible for monitoring five overseas projects funded by two Canadian donors: 4. A project aiming at strengthening the local network of associations in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Municipality of Matola, Mozambique. The activities of this project are supported by the CAW Social Justice Fund. 1. A landmine clearance project in Mozambique. This project is cause supported by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) s Mine Action Unit (MAU) and the Social Justice Fund of the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) Union. Fred Denis pour Handicap International 5. A project focusing on the capacity building of local institutions in order to improve service delivery to mine victims in Colombia. This project is funded by CIDA s MAU. DLVT/Handicap International 2. A socioeconomic reinsertion project in Angola. This project is financed by the CAW Social Justice Fund. 3. In Burundi, a Mine Risk Education and victim assistance project. This project is supported by CIDA s MAU. Our team In terms of human resources, many changes have taken place in 2007: we recruited Sandrine Guillot as our Communication, Events and Fundraising Manager. Soon after that, Lyne Caron joined our team, acting as Recruitment Officer. James Buchanan, our Programme Support Officer took on a new position with HI in Morocco. Christian Champigny was hired to replace him. Philippe Satre left our Board of Directors and François Boscher was then nominated to replace him as our Board s Secretary. And of course, we will not forget to mention our many dedicated collaborators and volunteers! They helped us carry out our activities throughout the year. 2
The pyramid of shoes Sylvie Trépanier During the summer of 2007, all our efforts were focused on organizing our first pyramid of shoes that took place in Montreal, on the 8th of September. The aim was to collect hundreds pairs of shoes from the public to create a pyramid-shaped structure, as a symbol of solidarity for the victims of landmines and cluster bombs. The public was also invited to sign a petition asking for the implementation of an international treaty banning the use of cluster bombs. For this event, we put together a coordination committee which was represented by 15 volunteers and each committee member had specific tasks and responsibilities. Three thousand posters were posted and three thousand flyers were distributed in downtown Montreal. Over 40 volunteers had been mobilized to help during the event and hundreds of people participated in the different activities, such as speeches, testimonies, musical performances, and landmine clearance demonstrations. The success of this event would not have been made possible without the hard work of our volunteers for whom we are extremely grateful! Media exposure The press coverage that we received during the event fulfilled entirely our expectations. In fact, we obtained several radio and TV interviews before, during, and after the event. TVA, Radio Canada (Radio and TV), LCN, CTV, and The Canadian Press were among the media which covered the event. To conclude, we also had an important article including a large picture in Montreal s newspaper La Presse. Following the success of our first pyramid of shoes, our organization plans to repeat the experience in September 2008! For the next event, we will need all the help we can get so do not hesitate to contact us if you want to give us a hand! Sylvie Trépanier The meeting with ERAI in Montréal and our Members Meeting Entreprise Rhône-Alpes International (ERAI) Canada, is a non-profit organization founded in 1987 the Conseil Régional Rhône-Alpes, France, to help promote the economic fabric of the region internationally. In addition to contributing to the Canadian development of Rhône-Alpes businesses, ERAI Canada seeks to promote the Region to Canadian companies by 3
against landmines and international development. This event was successfully organizing information sessions primarily on topics related to the business world. As a partner of our organization since its creation, ERAI Canada organized a meeting for their members to give more visibility to Handicap International. The meeting was then followed by a wine and cheese in the evening, which provided us with the opportunity to present our mission and our activities in the field. We also had the chance to explore the possibility of building partnerships with the business representatives attending the event. Members Meeting In May 2007, we organized a meeting at the St-Pierre centre in Montreal to recruit new members. During the evening, the guests were introduced to the mission and activities of our organization. Thanks to this activity, we were able to recruit 20 new members! Organizing an international symposium in Ottawa On the 4th and 5th of December 2007, thanks to the financial support of CIDA, we organized an international symposium entitled: Reinforcing the links between actions accomplished. Our first objective was to raise CIDA s and Canadian NGO representatives awareness on actions against landmines commonly referred to as Mine Action. Our second objective was the development of tools and concepts to enable the symposium participants to promote the integration of Mine Action into their humanitarian, peace building, human rights, and development programs. Mr. Colin R. Newhouse, Chairman of our Board of Directors welcomed the participants to the symposium. His Royal Highness Prince Mired Raad Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan who was the symposium s guest of honour, made the opening speech. He is a key political actor in the fight against landmines. His Excellency the Ambassador of Belgium in Canada Mr. Jean Lint, who played a crucial role in the implementation of the Ottawa Treaty in 1997, was a keynote speaker. The participants at the symposium were representatives from various institutions, including the Canadian government (CIDA), Canadian NGOs, 4
international experts in the fight against landmines, and local partner organizations of countries heavily affected by landmines. This event was attended by over 70 participants some of which came from Europe, the USA, Afghanistan, Cambodia, Mozambique, Uganda, Nicaragua, Senegal, etc. Please do not hesitate to express your comments and suggestions on the topics covered in the newsletter or on any other subjects that are important to you!
