You can choose to specialise in early years, primary or secondary education or a combination of these. Professional recognition The specialisations that include Primary Education or Secondary Education are accredited with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT). Graduates are eligible for registration with VIT and qualified for employment as a teacher in Australian schools. Students planning to register as teachers interstate or overseas should check registration requirements with local authorities in case additional requirements apply. The specialisations that include Early Years Education are accredited with the Australian Children s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). Graduates who intend to teach in a preschool or kindergarten program are required to be registered with the Victorian Institute of Teaching. *pending final accreditation 2

Applicants must also meet the Faculty s English language requirements. Secondary specialisation: Students completing a secondary specialisation are also required to qualify for two teaching specialist areas or one double teaching specialist area. Primary and Secondary specialisation: Students completing a primary and secondary specialisation are also required to qualify for one teaching specialist area at secondary level. You will be required to undertake more than the Standard Annual Load of 48 credit points in Year 1 in order to complete the course in 1.5 calendar years. The fee quoted is based on 48 credit points of study for one standard year. Learn through practice You will gain professional experience by completing a minimum of 60 days of teaching practice throughout the course in urban, rural, remote or international settings and schools. This includes the opportunity to gain teaching experience in locations such as China, Cook Islands, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Malaysia, South Africa and United Arab Emirates (UAE). Become a specialist Choose to specialise in one of the following five areas and graduate with a teaching degree that reflects your expertise. Early Years Education This specialisation covers the education of children from birth to eight years of age and will qualify you to teach in childcare, kindergartens and pre-schools and support children s transition to school. You will gain professional experience through 60 days of supervised teaching placements in early years settings. Graduates of this specialisation are prepared for leadership in early years educational settings. Campus: Clayton Early Years and Primary Education This specialisation will qualify you to teach infants and children from birth to 12 years of age in childcare, kindergartens, preschools and primary schools. You will gain professional experience through 70 days of supervised teaching placements in early years and primary education settings. Graduates of this specialisation are prepared for leadership roles in both early years and primary educational settings. Campus: Clayton Primary Education This specialisation will qualify you to teach children aged five to 12 years in primary schools. You will gain practical professional experience through 60 days of supervised teaching placements in primary schools. Graduates of this specialisation are prepared to become effective and proactive leaders and educators in primary education settings. Campus: Berwick, Peninsula, Off-campus Primary and Secondary Education This specialisation will qualify you to teach children and adolescents aged five to 18 years in primary and secondary schools from Foundation to Year 12. You will build on the content knowledge developed in your undergraduate degree and qualify to teach adolescents in one secondary subject area. You will gain professional experience through 60 days of supervised teaching practice in primary and secondary education settings. Graduates of this specialisation are well prepared for multiple career options. Your flexibility will be in demand across primary and secondary schools and a range of community contexts. Campus: Berwick Secondary Education This specialisation will qualify you to teach adolescents from 12 to 18 years of age in secondary schools in two teaching areas or one double teaching area. You will undertake specialist study which will provide the knowledge required to become a teacher in two subject areas (or one double teaching area). You will gain professional experience through 60 days of supervised teaching practice in secondary education settings. Graduates of this specialisation are prepared for a future as an expert specialist teacher capable of leading innovation in a range of secondary school settings. 8 Master of Counselling Are you considering a career in counselling? If you are passionate about helping people and want to make a positive difference in the lives of others, this is the course for you. The Master of Counselling at Monash provides a professional qualification and offers a combination of theory and professional experience. It provides you with the knowledge and skills to begin a rewarding career as a counsellor. The course is suited to people from a variety of professions, such as human resources, health, social welfare and education. It is taught by leading academics with extensive experience working as counsellors and psychologists. The course draws on contemporary theories and approaches to counselling and psychotherapy and develops your appreciation of the mental-health issues that arise across the lifespan. You will examine the various forms of professional counselling, including online and distance counselling, child and adolescent counselling, and individual, couples and group counselling. You will also be introduced to the ethical and professional issues faced by counsellors. Creative approaches to counselling will be examined, including play therapy and art therapy. In addition, you will gain in-depth knowledge across a range of contemporary cognitive-behaviour therapies. You will complete 300 hours of professional experience, which includes contact and non-contact hours. Non-contact hours include any counselling-related duties associated with the placement centre that do not involve counselling clients. Contact hours include client counselling or discussions with case managers, teachers, social workers, and/or family members. Master of Counselling graduates work in a variety of fields, including careers counselling, education, child and family services, childprotection services, health policy, family counselling, health-services management and rehabilitation counselling. 10 Graduate Diploma of Professional Psychology Are you seeking further studies in Psychology? The Graduate Diploma of Professional Psychology is an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited fourth-year qualification in psychology. The course is suited for people who have completed a bachelor s degree with a major in psychology from any course accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), and who want to pursue advanced postgraduate study in psychology at master s or doctoral level, or alternatively to undertake supervised psychological practice. The course provides advanced study of the discipline of psychology, research training, and an introduction to psychological practice. By engaging with contemporary research and literature in developmental psychology, you will: understand human development across the lifespan including biological, perceptual, cognitive, personality, social and emotional changes from infancy to adulthood examine legislation relating to the practice of psychology and how to comply with such legislation appreciate the role of ethics in maintaining the integrity of the profession learn about individual differences and how these may be assessed using different assessment tools develop an appreciation of the role of scientific research in the field of psychology and undertake an independent research project. You will have a choice of one elective. At present, electives include developmental psychology and wellbeing or behaviour change interventions for practitioners. Eligible graduates may proceed to further training and study required for professional registration in psychology. 8

11 Note: A minimum six-year sequence of education and training in psychology is required for an individual to become eligible for general registration as a psychologist in Australia. Registration requirements are determined by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA); consistent with the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme. Graduates of this Graduate Diploma qualify for associate membership of the Australian Psychological Society (Assoc MAPS), and are eligible to progress to fifth- and sixth-year level work in psychology. 12 Master of Professional Psychology The Master of Professional Psychology is a one year course that prepares psychology graduates in advanced psychotherapeutic skills required for general registration as a psychologist. You will develop expertise in applying counselling theories and practices through your understanding of a range of evidence-based psychotherapies. You will learn core skills and theoretical concepts underpinning the therapeutic process and extend your practical knowledge in counselling interventions as you develop therapeutic relationships with a range of client groups. You will acquire the skills to administer, score, interpret and report on a comprehensive range of psychological tests and assessments. You will engage with the Australian Psychological Society (APS) code of ethics and explore ethical dilemmas to support your ethical practice in undertaking research, educational or professional roles in different workplaces. You will be exposed to a range of techniques associated with promotion of wellbeing, symptom reduction and behavioural change. In addition, you will learn how to employ culturally sensitive interventions that have been shown to facilitate positive outcomes in a variety of contexts. You will learn how to utilise research in guiding your choice of therapeutic interventions and how to evaluate the outcomes of your intervention in practice. You will gain practical experience through 300 hours of supervised professional activities which are undertaken at the Faculty s onsite clinic and with off campus Partners. Following graduation, you will be eligible to undertake one year of supervised generalist practice you will then progress to full registration as a psychologist. On completion of the course, graduates will have acquired the necessary skills to prepare for a final year of supervised practice in the field for general registration under the 5+1 internship model for registration. Graduates of the program arrange a Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) approved 1-year internship in settings of their choice. 14 Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology The course develops you as an independent specialist with a professional commitment to lifelong learning and application of the theoretical, research, assessment and therapeutic skills related to educational and developmental psychology. Educational and developmental psychologists focus on how people develop and learn throughout their lifetime. They work with individuals, families, groups and organisations in a range of settings and have varying roles such as school psychologist, guidance officer, and child and adolescent counsellor. They conduct psychological and educational assessments and instructional planning for exceptional children, adolescents and adults. The Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology is an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited fifth and sixth-year sequence in psychology and prepares graduates to practise as educational and developmental psychologists in settings including schools, health and welfare services, care facilities, and within business environments. You will develop advanced understanding of, and the skills associated with: human developmental stages and processes throughout the lifespan psycho-educational assessment and treatment approaches for problematic or atypical development advanced therapeutic counselling process and the cycle of effective intervention and change contemporary models of exceptionality and inclusion evidence-based intervention and treatment programs for psychological problems and psychopathology across the lifespan contemporary research and theories of abilities, personality and psychopathology ethical, cultural and professional issues administering and reporting a range of essential psycho-educational assessment instruments for assessing abilities, personality and adjustment of children through to adults. 15 In addition you will apply theory to practice with 1000 hours of supervised professional experience in a range of settings. In undertaking a research thesis, you will develop an evidence based approach to psychology, carrying out reviews and scientific investigations relevant to the theory and practice of educational and developmental psychology. As a graduate, you will be qualified to register as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia (PBA). You will also meet most requirements for membership of the College of Educational and Developmental Psychologists of the Australian Psychological Society. CRICOS A COURSE CODE D6007 STUDENT PROFILE Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology Nicola Hogan My supervisor was really supportive and assisted me in engaging with the course content and the profession as a whole. I also had a few fantastic lecturers who weren t as antiquated as those I had previously encountered at other universities! It was great being surrounded by enthused professionals who were still actively engaged in the profession. 13

What to expect in your course Our expert courses offer a fully online offering as well as a face-to-face component which students can choose to attend. Our courses range in duration from six months to two years and offer different points of entry and exit to suit varying academic and professional backgrounds and prior qualifications and work experience. Graduate Certificate of Education Studies This course is designed to orient students to the field of education at a postgraduate level. It is suited to students who have a first qualification in a discipline other than education. It is also a pathway for students who do not yet meet the entry requirements for the Master of Education. It provides you with an understanding of concepts and contemporary issues in education and of educational contexts and systems, locally and globally. It develops knowledge and understanding of major theoretical and professional debates in specialist areas within the field of education and locates these within contemporary research. Through your studies, you will: acquire knowledge of foundational concepts and traditions in education develop understanding of recent issues and debates across policy and practice examine critical perspectives on substantive and contemporary issues and ideas demonstrate analytical skills in evaluating, synthesising and communicating academic concepts build confidence in academic practice at an advanced level. Students apply this understanding through the design and implementation of a small-scale research project which demonstrates capacity to undertake high-level research synthesis, analysis and evaluation. Students who complete the Graduate Certificate of Educational Research to a high standard are well placed to commence a PhD or a Masters by Research course in the field of education. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have successfully completed four years of full-time equivalent university study at Monash University or another recognised tertiary institution in education or a relevant field with an average mark of 65% or above. You will need to include a word research proposal and a detailed resume listing your qualifications, work experience and details of two recent referees. Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology/ Doctor of Philosophy This course combines the coursework and practicum requirements of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited Master of Educational and Developmental Psychology degree with the thesis requirements of the PhD program.
