Changes to Early Start What it Means to Orientation Advising Allison Douglas-Chicoye Claudia Pinter-Lucke Academic Programs
The Five W s of Early Start Who: Students who have placed into remediation through the ELM and/or EPT What: A mandatory program to begin remediation in the summer before the freshman year When: In the summer, any time between mid-may and early September Where: On any CSU or community college campus Why: Executive Order 1048 from the Chancellor s Office 1
What has Changed: Last Year Program was voluntary There were only 4 unit classes There were 5 and 10 week classes All classes were taken on our campus Student received grades This Year Program is mandatory There is also a 1.5 unit option There are also two week classes for math Classes can be taken from any CSU or CCC campus Students will receive CR/NC and a numerical score 2
More about Participation All students who have placed into remedial math must participate. All students who have placed into remedial English with a score of 137 and below must participate. This is some, but not all of our ENG 95 students This is also ENG 98 and some but not all of our ENG 99 students Some students are exempt: Out of state students International students Students with serious and compelling reasons Financial need is not likely to be an exemption because low fee has been set by CO and eligible students will have all fees covered. 3
More about Curriculum All campuses were required to create 1 semester unit (1.5 quarter unit) options for the students. These classes will not, in most cases, change the placement of the student. We will offer a 1.5 unit two-week on-campus math course, ESM 005 We will offer a 1.5 unit five week on-line English course, ESE 005 We will continue to offer our existing 4 unit preparatory classes, and encourage our students to take them. These classes, if passed, will change the placement of the student. We will offer ESM10, ESM11, ESM12, ESE 95, ESE 98, ESE 99 4
More about Registration and Grading Students can take the classes on any campus, in person or online. We will know where the students are taking the classes if they don t take them at CPP, but not what they are taking. Semester campuses must complete instruction by August 6. Quarter campuses are allowed to offer a final chance through September 14 for their own students. WE WILL. The courses will appear on the students transcripts if they attend here and on transfer records if they attend elsewhere We cannot assign letter grades to these students. CR for participating; NC for not participating CR does not mean that they have earned a C or better A numerical score will be entered as a test score but will not be available until mid-august 5
Just to Complicate Things - Summer Advantage Early Start For Math students and English students below 137 Mandatory Only ESE 95, (98 & 99) No ESE 96 Low fees set by the CO Special financial aid available Summer Advantage For English students between 137 and 147 Optional ENG 95, ENG 96 & ENG 99 No ENG 98 Special fees set by the campus Special CPP summer grant available 6
What this means for Advising If your student is taking an Early Start 1.5 unit class on our campus The student should register for the class indicated by the EPT/ELM score If your student is taking an Early Start 4 unit class on our campus The student should register for the next class beyond the one indicated by the EPT/ELM score 7
What this means for Advising If your student is taking an Early Start class on another CSU or Community College campus He/she will be asked to bring a transcript or progress report to Orientation Placement will be determined by the English and/or Mathematics Departments Placement will be sent directly to advising departments Permissions numbers will be required for registration Permission will be given over the phone by English and Mathematics Departments 8
What this means for Advising If your student is taking an Early Start Mathematics class on a Community College campus The student should register for the class indicated by the EPT/ELM score Students will have the opportunity to take the MDPT in Early August for placement adjustment 9
What this means for Advising If your student is not registered for or taking an Early Start Class? If your student has a positive service indicator: He/she is exempt from Early Start. The student must start remediation in the fall quarter; both math and English, if both are needed If the student has a negative service indicator (Early Start registration hold): He/she is not exempt, but has not yet registered for Early Start. The student must contact the Early Start Office. If the student has NO service indicator: Things are okay for now. She/he might be registered at another campus Remind the student that this is mandatory, and he/she needs to take some Early Start class somewhere this summer. 10

EPT Placement Native English Speakers If your score is in the range: You must take: ESE 095 followed by ENG 096 in the Fall Multi-lingual Speakers If your score is in the range: You must take: ESE 098 followed by ESE 099 in the second summer session or ENG 099 in Fall ESE
