2 Purposes of Early Assessment Program (EAP) EARLY READINESS SIGNAL Identify high school students who need to do additional work in English and/or mathematics before entering CSU (via Smarter Balanced Assessment beginning 2015) INFORM STUDENTS OF READINESS Inform students, families, and high schools of students readiness for college-level work in English and mathematics 12 TH GRADE INTERVENTIONS Motivate students to take needed steps in 12 th grade to assure readiness
3 Components of EAP The components of the CSU Early Assessment Program provide a comprehensive solution for helping students become ready for college. 11 th grade testing Supplemental high school preparation Teacher & administrator professional development 3
4 Why should eleventh grade students prepare for and participate in the EAP? Earn an exemption from CSU-required English and/or mathematics placement tests EAP results accepted at all 23 CSUs and at over 80 CCCs Identify the need for additional preparation for college-level courses while in high school Adjust senior-year coursework to prepare for college-level courses Avoid investing time and money in remediation courses that do not transfer and do count towards college degree attainment
5 EAP BENEFITS Students whose results indicate readiness are exempted from the following CSU placement exams: English Placement Test (EPT) Entry Level Math Exam (ELM) and are eligible to enter credit bearing courses. EAP results also accepted at over 80 participating community colleges students and are then eligible to enter transfer-level courses. 5

8 2014 EAP Test Results By August 8, 2014, Educational Testing Services will send 2014 EAP results to districts on a CD Rom. The district will then mail the EAP Student Report to students homes, as well as a copy of the student reports to school sites, for the student files. Students can also access their EAP results online (students must fill out release bubble on score sheet) 8

10 Conditionally Ready ENGLISH Students whose results indicate that they are conditionally ready can clear their condition (move to college ready) by enrolling in an approved senior year course and earn a grade of C or higher Expository Reading and Writing Course (high school would need to meet criteria for implementation) Advanced Placement (AP) English International Baccalaureate (IB) English English courses approved for extra honors credit (weighted) by the UC (so indicated on the UC Doorways a-g course list with a star) 10
11 Other Exemptions - ENGLISH 500 or higher on the Critical Reading section of the SAT 680 or higher on the writing section of the SAT 680 or higher on the SAT II: Writing Test 22 or higher on the ACT English Test Score of 3 or higher on either the Language & Composition or Literature & Composition College Board AP Exam
12 Conditionally Ready MATH Students whose results indicate that they are conditionally ready can clear their condition (move to college ready) by enrolling in an approved senior year course and earn a grade of C or higher Successfully complete, Algebra II (e.g. trigonometry, math analysis, pre-calculus, calculus (AP), AP statistics, AP physics, etc.) Supervised e-learning Course: Completion of the online instructional program monitored by CSU math faculty prior to high school graduation. Pass a one semester community college math course that satisfies the CSU general education requirement in Quantitative Reasoning.
13 Other Exemptions - MATH 550 or higher on the Math section of the SAT 550 or higher on Level IC or IIC of the SAT II Math 23 or higher on the ACT Math Test Score of 3 or higher on the AP Statistics or AP Calculus

18 Math Professional Development Strengthening Mathematics Instruction (SMI) Offered by County Offices of Education and the CSU A committee of mathematics professors, math educators from the CSU, and math experts from county offices and high schools has developed a short professional development program for math teachers who work at the level of Algebra I and above The workshop focuses on helping students to develop sufficient math competency that they will perform successfully on standardized tests, including the EAP. Available to both Middle School and High School mathematics teachers
