3 RESPIRATORY CARE PROGRAM APPLICANT INFORMATION Fall 2015 Application Deadline: 1/12/2015 Program Introduction Thank you for your interest in joining the respiratory care profession. The respiratory care program at Seattle Central College takes place over 9 sequential quarters. In order to graduate and be eligible for credentialing, licensure and employment in the field, students must first complete an AAS-T in Allied Health, then complete the BAS in Allied Health. The program curriculum is designed to meet all of these requirements. Within the program, students learn a variety of knowledge and skills in order to practice Respiratory Care within the scope of practice for a Respiratory Care Practitioner in Washington State. The scope of practice for a Respiratory Care Practitioner can be viewed here: The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). They are located at 1248 Harwood Road Bedford, TX Feel free to visit their website at Graduates of the program are eligible to sit for the Registered Respiratory Therapist exam to be credentialed by the National Board for Respiratory Care. Once credentialed, graduates are then eligible for licensure in Washington State. Applications for the program are reviewed each winter for admission into the program in the following Spring quarter. The successful applicant has the knowledge, skills and professional demeanor to be successful in a rigorous full-time professional program. Admission requirements can be viewed on our website Successful applicants, once enrolled in the program, will be required to submit documentation relating to fitness and eligibility for duty. Once accepted into the program the following documentation will be required in order to be enrolled in the program: Review and sign an affidavit of technical standards Possess documented immunity to certain diseases (through immunization records and/or laboratory titer) Meet certain physical requirements Successfully pass a background check The Seattle Central College Respiratory Care Program is looking for students who are committed to the profession of respiratory care. Before applying to our program, applicants should explore all facets of a respiratory care career, which may include, but are not limited to, Adult Critical Care, Pediatrics, Homecare, Pulmonary Rehab, Diagnostics, Management, 2
4 Education, Sales/Marketing and Research. Applicants are encouraged to apply to other respiratory care programs in the region to enhance their chances of securing entrance in a respiratory care program. The Admissions process is competitive; the process is designed to give merit to the attributes that are most likely to bolster success in the program, while not being exclusionary. Applicants are scored based on a combination of academic performance and experience. Please read the entire application packet carefully and follow the application procedures exactly. Please read through the whole packet and complete all steps for application. All applicants must address each section of the application to be considered. Who can apply for the program? Anyone who is enrolled as a Seattle Central College student, is older than 18 years old and has met the prerequisite requirements. Please note that applicants can have up to 15 credits of prerequisites in process at the time of application. All prerequisites need to be complete before the start of Fall quarter. 3
5 Step 1 pre-application 1. You must be a Seattle Central Student to apply. You need to apply to the college. This can be done online at: 2. In addition to applying, you must complete the campus START orientation to get oriented to campus resources and processes. You need to do this to be able to register for classes. 3. Transfer in all relevant course work from other schools. See table 1 for coursework you might want to transfer in. Have official transcripts from all schools where you took relevant coursework sent to Seattle Central College Registration. This process takes up to 8 weeks to complete and should be done prior to the application deadline. Go to the registration office in BE1104 and fill out an incoming transcript evaluation form. Be sure to put down Respiratory Care as your program of study. Check the Grades and Records page for more information: Please include in your application: Transfer of credit evaluation and all relevant transcripts. 4. Meet with the workforce advisor William Spence in the advising office BE1102 to get started on an academic plan to get you ready for the program. scccwf@seattlecolleges.edu 5. Attend a Respiratory Care Program information session. It is required for application. The dates and times for upcoming information sessions can be found here: Scroll down, we are under the BAS in Allied Health. 6. Do you need to take a TOEFL exam? If English is not your first language, you may need to take a TOEFL exam. Please review Step 3 in this application in order to plan to take this exam. 9 Medical Experience Verification Form One of the application criteria for the Respiratory Care program is previous experience in the health fields. This is not required but individuals can earn one point on their application score for having a minimum of 500 hours of experience in a healthcare discipline doing direct patient care. To document medical experience please have your employer fill out this form and submit documentation. Acceptable forms of documentation include pay stubs or a W-2 form. 11 Step 3 TOEFL evaluation Seattle Central College serves a diverse community of students. Seattle area healthcare providers serve a diverse community of patients. Non-native English speakers are welcome in the respiratory care program and in the respiratory care community. The critical nature of communication in the field requires a certain level of English proficiency. To evaluate the applicant s level of English proficiency, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) can be used. English proficiency exams should cover both Written and Spoken English comprehension. Minimum score thresholds are as follows: TOEFL: Minimum Score before Admission TOEFL Internet-based 76 TOEFL computer-based 207 TOEFL paper-based 540 -OR- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) 6.0 All applicants please answer the following questions (Circle your response): Is English your first language (native language): Yes No If you answered YES, No further questions required please move onto step 4. No TOEFL is required. Did you graduate High School in the United States? Yes No If YES please include high school transcripts. Note: the GED does not meet this requirement. 13 Step 4 Application Essay and recommendations Application Essay In view of the changing focus of the healthcare profession, please write an essay of no more than 500 words describing how your personal, core values will relate to your practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP). In what way is Respiratory Care the right career path for you? Discuss your reasons for wanting to begin a career in Respiratory Care, your career goals and your future plans as they relate to the profession. Please type your essay on a separate sheet of 8.5 X 11 paper and use double spacing and no smaller than 12 point font. Include your name at the top of the front page and the bottom of the last page of the essay. Letters of recommendation Applicants are required to submit 2 signed, original letters of recommendation. One recommendation should be from an employer and one from a community leader, professor or volunteer coordinator. The letters should be printed on letterhead from the organization and signed by the individual making the recommendation. Step 4 checklist Completed application essay 2 letters of recommendation 12
14 Step 5 Submit your application Once you have completed all of the elements in steps 1-4, it is time to turn in your application. Please submit your application in person to Hannah Markwardt in BE3210 or by mail to: Seattle Central College Respiratory Care Program 1701 Broadway BE3210 Seattle WA Selection/Review Process: Incomplete applications will not be considered in the selection/review process. Please make sure you provide all documentation requested. Applicants will go through a selection/review process. Twenty-five students will be selected for program entry. All other qualified students will be placed on an alternate list. Applicants wanting to re-apply for the following year must resubmit their application forms, pay the nonrefundable application fee, and meet that year s deadline date. Applications are scored based on the relative merits of the candidate s academic performance, recommendations and essays. The top scoring candidates will be asked to participate in a final interview process. The interview is in a panel format where applicants will be given the opportunity to respond to questions from the panel of interviewers. The interview panel may consist of the program s faculty, administrators and members of the Respiratory Care community. All applicants will be notified of their acceptance status by and applicants on the alternate list will be ranked.
