1 BACHELOR OF NURSING Information for International applicants 2016 ENTRY The Bachelor of Nursing programme offers you stimulating undergraduate degree level studies and provides a pathway to your professional qualification as a New Zealand Registered Nurse. The Bachelor of Nursing programme enables graduates to enter practice as a Registered Nurse with a sound knowledge base of nursing theory, health studies, social sciences, biological sciences, research and professional practice skills. Theoretical and nursing practice experiences are balanced throughout the programme. Practice experiences occur in a wide range of community and health care settings and comprise fifty percent of the programme. The Nursing programme will be offered in a blended mode. This means that there will be both face to face and online teaching. You will need to have access to a computer with broadband. 2 BACHELOR OF NURSING ADDITIONAL COSTS $2400 approximately for textbooks for all three years of the programme (approx $900 year 1) $200 approximately for uniforms PROGRAMME DATES SEMESTER ONE Programme Starts Monday, 15 February 2016 You may be required to attend nursing practice venues outside your area, i.e. You will need to meet the cost of your own travel and accommodation from Waipukurau, Takapau, Te Puia Springs, or other areas, as part of your programme. In the third year of the programme a Registration Fee to sit the Nursing Council of New Zealand exam is required. The cost for this is currently approximately $240. There is also an additional cost for your Registered Nurse badge once you have successfully completed the State Examination. Upon completion of your degree study, academic attire required for the graduation ceremony can be hired at your expense. JOB OPPORTUNITIES Nursing is an essential part of health care. To be a Registered Nurse you need to have integrity and empathy, a spirit of inquiry and a commitment to learning. You need to be able to work independently and as part of a team. You must have a mature outlook, a sense of responsibility and a genuine desire to care for people. A personal interview may be part of the application process. ACADEMIC ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet degree standard entry requirements. Approved bridging/foundation programmes include: the Certificate in Health Science, or Diploma in Therapeutic and Sport Massage. ENGLISH LANGUAGE ENTRY REQUIREMENT Students are required to have attained an acceptable level of English language fluency. This may be demonstrated in a variety of ways, including successful study in English, approved scores on IELTS test (6.5 in all bands and in one exam sitting). Programme Ends Friday, 2 December 2016 FIRST AID CERTIFICATE Once accepted into the Bachelor of Nursing programme, you are required to have a valid First Aid Certificate (includes US Provide first aid for life threatening conditions Level 2 and US Demonstrate knowledge of common first aid conditions and how to respond to them Level 2 on the NZQA Framework) before the programme begins. If you do not have a First Aid Certificate it can be obtained through St John or Red Cross. If you have a valid First Aid Certificate (valid for two years from date of issue) you will need to provide a witnessed copy of the certificate with your application. ENTRY WITH CREDIT You may already have some knowledge or skills that can be recognised as part of your intended study. This may take a number of different forms including study while at high school, study at a private training establishment, workplace training, other tertiary study, life experiences or voluntary work. If you think you may qualify, you may want to apply for Cross Credit or Recognition of Prior Learning. Cross Credit is based on the equivalency of courses or qualifications. You would apply for Cross Credit if you have passed a very similar course at the same level. You will be asked to provide details of anything that you would like considered as credit toward your intended programme of study, as part of your application.
3 You must apply prior to enrolment. RPL and Cross Credit cannot be awarded for a course if you are enrolled in that course. FACILITIES The Clinical Arts and Technology (CAT) Centre is an interactive learning environment designed to facilitate, support and provide opportunities for students to develop, practice and refine their cognitive, technical and practicum skills. The centre is designed to act as a conduit to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Student skill development is facilitated with an emphasis on hands on practice. There are 3 fully equipped simulated, hospital oriented patient environments on our Napier campus and one on our Gisborne campus. Live video linking equipment is set up to connect the Hawke's Bay and Gisborne nursing labs for shared learning experiences. BLENDED LEARNING The BN programme is taught using a blended learning mode. Blended learning is a combination of classroom and online delivery using EIT online and/or other web tools. It uses a range of online assessment and communication tools, online activities, knowledge sharing and collaborative work to keep students connected and learning. TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT Blended delivery takes advantage of all available resources, techniques and technologies and students will be supported to learn the use of these tools. If students know how to send an , use social media and access sites on the internet, they will have the basic skills needed to participate in blended activities. For those who have not yet learned these skills, introductory tuition can be arranged with the Learning Support Service located in the Library. The School of Nursing has arranged a half day school orientation where staff will support students to enrol online, enter their courses and make their first introductory post online. Ongoing technology support is available throughout your study in the Library with the Learning Support Service. Software - Microsoft office or similar, Adobe Acrobat reader, Adobe flash player, modern internet browser such as Firefox or Chrome browsers If you are unable to have access to the equipment described above, the EIT Library on the Napier and Gisborne campuses have a full complement of computer suites that students can use. ASSESSMENTS Assessments include essays, case studies, presentations, reflective practice portfolio, exams and practical demonstrations of skills and critical thinking. PRACTICUM, WORK EXPERIENCE: In order for students to complete the Bachelor of Nursing programme, New Zealand Nursing Council requires students to have undertaken a minimum of 1100 hours of practicum experience. In order for you to meet this requirement over the three years you will be required to: Undertake rotating and rostered shifts, i.e. shifts which may fall anytime between Monday Sunday, travel to various health care agency venues which include Napier, Hastings, Waipukurau, Takapau, Wairoa and Gisborne areas including Te Puia Springs, and travel to various community venues. Please Note: Any travel or accommodation expenses that are incurred will be the responsibility of the student. As part of the requirements of your acceptance into the Bachelor of Nursing Programme at EIT, you need to provide the following results. Hepatitis B both Surface Antigen and Surface Antibody within the last five years. Evidence of measles (both rubella and morbilli) immunity or that you received two vaccinations of MMR as a child Evidence of Pertussis vaccination in the last five years. Before you enter year two you will be required to have a blood test-interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) also known as Quantiferon Gold. MRSA Swabs: You will be required to have MRSA swabs annually before commencing practicum. You will receive more detailed information relating to immunity and immunisations at orientation. Where possible students should try to organize access to: A computer with broadband Internet access (dial up access is not recommended). COURSE BRIEF DESCRIPTION - YEAR ONE CREDIT VALUE NZQA LEVEL BN5.701 BN5.703 Applied Science for Nursing 1 The aim of this course, coupled with BN5.705, is to introduce the student to the foundations of scientific knowledge required for nursing practice. This includes the basic concepts and principles that determine the normal functioning of the human body, including structural and functional changes throughout the lifespan. C: Nil) Health in The Context of Aotearoa New Zealand The aim of this course is for the student to understand the structures that underpin New Zealand's health care system. The student will be able to discuss historical (including the Treaty of Waitangi), cultural, socioeconomic and environmental influences on the health of people living in New Zealand. Students will acquire an understanding of the systems involved in the control, maintenance, protection, reproduction and development of the human body. (P or C: BN5.703 & BN5.706) 15 6 BN6.802 Knowledge for Nursing Practice 2: Mental Health and Addictions The aim of this course is for the student to understand theoretical frameworks related to mental health and how the use of these can influence mental health and addiction nursing across the lifespan. The course content will explore the impact of changes to mental health or addiction states on people, families, whānau and communities. 6 BACHELOR OF NURSING BN6.803 BN6.804 BN6.805 Nursing the Person with Altered Mental Health Addiction The aim of this course is for the student to apply nursing knowledge and skills in a culturally safe manner with people who experience altered mental health or addiction. (P: All Bachelor of Nursing Year 1 (level 5) courses P or C: BN6.802) Knowledge for Nursing Practice 3: Physical Health This course builds on the students knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology. Abnormal physiology underpins altered health states and the knowledge gained from this course enables accurate patient assessment which can then be used to provide safe and effective nursing care. (P: All Bachelor of Nursing Year 1 (level 5) courses P or C: BN6.805) Nursing the Person with Altered Physical Health The aim of this course is for the student to utilise previous and new knowledge and skills to provide safe and effective nursing practice for people with altered physical health, throughout the lifespan. Further physical assessment is introduced and the student is encouraged to use these skills within their clinical practicum. (P: All Bachelor of Nursing Year 1 (level 5) courses C: BN6.804) COURSE BRIEF DESCRIPTION - YEAR THREE CREDIT VALUE NZQA LEVEL BN7.901 BN7.902 Pharmacology for Health Professionals The use and administration of medications are an integral part of nursing practice. The aim of this course is for the student to gain an understanding of the fundamental scientific and physiological principles of commonly used medication groups and to relate this knowledge to nursing practice. The social and health care context in which they are prescribed is also explored. (P: All Bachelor of Nursing year one (level 5) and year 2 (level 6) courses) Knowledge for Nursing Practice 4: Family, Whānau and Community The aim of this course is for the student to critically examine the impact of social, political, economic and environmental influences on whanau and community health in New Zealand society throughout the lifespan. Students will undertake a clinical practicum related to whanau and community nursing.
