1 Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science 2016 For New Zealand Citizens & Permanent Residents The is a 120 credit (one year full-time or four years part-time), interdisciplinary programme that provides the opportunity for qualified health professionals and health service managers to develop advanced practice knowledge and critical analysis skills. The is characterised by advanced study in a specific health science discipline, requiring a foundation of undergraduate knowledge and skills achieved through previous tertiary qualifications or equivalent professional experience. The Postgraduate Diploma offers a selection of courses designed to meet the needs of health practitioners, health sector managers and other professionals whose practice has a focus on health. The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science may be completed with or without a specialty option. For Registered Nurses with a current New Zealand annual practicing certificate, application can be made with the Nursing Council of New Zealand for an endorsement in practice. TANZ is a collaborative alliance of seven institutes of technology. The TANZ post-graduate health professions partnership includes the Schools of Nursing from the following tertiary education institutions: Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), Universal College of Learning (UCOL), Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology (CPIT), and Otago Polytechnic (OP). On enrolment students who live nearer one of the TANZ partner institutes (UCOL, CPIT, OP), rather than EIT, may choose to access/receive academic support from the other participating TANZ partner. Outline continued Participants may enrol directly into the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science or further develop knowledge and skills gained during study of the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Science. The Postgraduate Diploma shall be awarded at the successful completion of 120 credits at level 8 (NZQA). Graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science will have developed their knowledge and skills of critical analysis, constructive synthesis and their application to high quality approaches to health care delivery. The is approved by the Nursing Council of New Zealand as an advanced nursing practice programme. Registered nurse graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Science may progress to the Master of Nursing programme. In this application pack you will find information about the programme, descriptions for each of the courses offered, and the fees and costs associated with this programme. We recommend that you take the opportunity to discuss study options with the Programme Coordinator to help ensure that you select the most appropriate pathway for your goals. Campus/location All the postgraduate courses are offered as either blended/online delivery or fully online delivery. This means that the majority of the work is located on a virtual teaching platform with directed activities and learning that the student works through. Teachers work within the virtual classroom setting daily so that they maintain contact with the students as much as if they were in a face to face classroom setting. Blended/online delivery means that there are workshops that the student is required to attend on campus, with the bulk of the learning activity undertaken in the online environment. Various teaching modes are used, such as virtual classroom discussions at predetermined times, and also in the asynchronous format. May be studied throughout New Zealand. Your career opportunities and study pathways Advanced professional practice within the specified discipline area, Health Service Management, Health Promotion, Primary Health Care. Pending successful completion of the required academic entry requirements, Registered Nurse graduates may credit their programme of study/ courses to the Master of Nursing programme. Other professions/interdisciplinary graduates may credit their study/courses to the Master of Health Science.

3 ENTRY CRITERIA The normal requirement for entry is an undergraduate degree in a health science with a B pass or better. Where the candidate s undergraduate degree does not provide the basis of study at the level required for more advanced study, enrolment in transitional or undergraduate courses may be required before the candidate shall be admitted. Where an applicant does not hold an undergraduate degree in health science: The applicant shall provide evidence of having completed a relevant professional qualification, and Provide evidence of successful completion of a relevant qualification or programme of study which is equivalent to those of first degree graduates, through the submission of a portfolio of evidence. A personal interview may be part of the application process. English language entry requirement All candidates, from countries where English is not the primary spoken language, require satisfactory achievement of tertiary studies in a country where English is the language of instruction or an IELTS score of at least 6.5 with no sub-test score lower than 6.0. Entry with credit Applicants may be admitted with credit transfer or recognition of prior learning. The Postgraduate Programmes Cluster Committee has discretion in the granting of academic credit. Academic credit may be awarded as specified credit where there is a substantial match between previous learning and the course for which academic credit is sought; or unspecified credit where the learning is broadly relevant to, and at an equivalent level to, the course for which academic credit is sought. Credit granted shall not be for course(s) completed as part of an undergraduate degree, nor shall credit be granted that exceeds one-half of the total programme credits. A RPL/Entry with Credit application pack is available on enrolment. It is recommended that applications for RPL/Entry with credit are made as part of the initial application. This will assist in the academic advisement to students regarding the appropriate programme of study and course section. However, entry with credit cannot be processed until the candidate is enrolled. You may contact the Postgraduate Programmes Coordinator through the School of Nursing. Some courses will require students to be actively working in the specialty area of practice. Class times Generally the courses are delivered asynchronously via online delivery. However, some courses may require attendance at synchronous online sessions or face-to-face workshops at the EIT campus. Any requirement for attendance at synchronous or face to face sessions is identified in the course information. Individual Study Hours Each credit for the course generally represents approximately 10 hours of student learning/study time over the period of the course. Each course consists of blended and online learning opportunities and in some cases clinical fieldwork, and on campus workshops. Students are expected to spend subsequent time in independent/self-directed study, critical reflection, and field work in their place of study or place of work. Please note that for all nursing endorsed courses, students must have a current annual practicing certificate as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing Council of New Zealand. Assessments Assessments may include assignments, seminar presentations, journaling exercises, video-taped exercises, exams and practical demonstration of skills.

This course specifically focuses on specialist skills and knowledge of clinical processes, assessment, treatment modalities and evaluation of the care provided to their particular client group. NB: This is not a regularly scheduled course, but maybe run as a partnership opportunity with health care organisations. However, students may apply for RPL/cross credit, as appropriate. Advanced Clinical Assessment and Diagnostic Reasoning (N) This course begins with an overview of comprehensive health assessment and diagnostic reasoning within the context of current trends in expanding and advanced practice. Students will critically appraise their own understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology required to develop advanced skills in interviewing, physical examination and diagnostic reasoning to identify knowledge deficits and learning needs. Skills, approaches and strategies for health assessment and diagnostic reasoning will be further enhanced. Students will be required to engage in significant independent learning and fieldwork. Students will undertake a range of activities to demonstrate advanced clinical assessment skills, critical thinking, and the application of diagnostic reasoning strategies.

8 MN8.402 MN8.404 MN8.405 MN8.406 Blended/online delivery Advanced Pathophysiology for Health Professionals (I-D) This course builds upon undergraduate study and the knowledge embedded in practice. The course will explore complex adult and child disease processes in order to support advanced diagnostic reasoning and therapeutic interventions for these client groups. This course assumes knowledge of normal physiological function and directs the student towards a progressive and more critical understanding of altered, complex health states. Advanced Practice for Disease Management (N) This course provides an in-depth review of adult disease management, its impact on health care provision and the need for integrated care across all health disciplines and services. Students will reflect on disease management as a complete, rather than fragmented, approach to care, with an emphasis on risk assessment and early intervention that focuses on reducing morbidity in individuals with chronic illness. Teaching and learning approaches in the course allow students to examine disease management from their own professional, clinical, contextual and service orientations, thus allowing them to develop clinical and professional leadership skills commensurate with their scope and level of clinical practice. This course also forms part of Nurse Practitioner preparation for those students seeking endorsement with the New Zealand Nursing Council. Ethical Concepts and Legal Issues for Advanced Practice (I-D) This course advances knowledge and understanding of ethical and legal principles associated with health care. Students explore questions and reflect on issues concerning the equity and appropriateness of health care services. Advanced Practice to Support Child and Family Health (N/M) Health care technologies and approaches to care are dynamic. Many of these changes affect both the person/individual and the family as a whole. Arising from this starting point, this course draws on knowledge of the child/tamariki, youth/ rangatahi and families/whānau. The child/youth within the family as the centre of health care will be examined and explored from a wide range of perspectives and disciplines.

9 MN8.407 MN8.408 MN8.409 Human Lactation, Breastfeeding and Infant Nutrition (I-D) This course develops theoretical and practical knowledge of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition to an expert level. Practitioners are assisted to explore the context of breastfeeding, human lactation and infant nutrition in relation to historical and socio-cultural perspectives, anatomy and physiology, mother baby dyad and other contemporary issues. Practitioners completing this course would be capable of providing lactation education and environments that support breastfeeding, and infant nutritional support. Health Services Management (I-D) This course is intended for those working in health service management and those considering the possibility of a management role. It is anticipated that students participating in this course are able to apply their knowledge and skills to their chosen area of practice. Students will be encouraged to identify and reflect upon the legal and regulatory requirements for health service management as well as the quality management ramifications arising from these. Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Nursing / Midwifery Practice (N/M) This course aims to allow the student to develop a conceptual understanding of pharmacology and therapeutics by building a foundation of knowledge of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics. This knowledge will underpin critical analysis of the impact of life stages and disease states on drug therapy and will be complemented by an understanding of drug safety issues. (I-D) This course provides the opportunity for students to critically appraise and reflect upon individual and organisational health care provision and to develop strategies for enhancing practice within a specialized area. This course requires the student to reflect upon, evaluate and record their personal journey of development on the continuum of specialty professional practice.

10 MN8.411 MN8.412 MN8.413 Blended/online delivery Advanced Practice to Support Elder Health (N/M) This course recognises the diversity of the age group and the complex relationship between determinants of health, health status and well being. With the steady increase in the number of older people, and particularly frail elders, it is vital that advanced practitioners are able to assess, plan and deliver appropriate and evidence-based services for this age group. The course examines the scope of independent/collaborative practice in relation to health promotion, maintenance and restoration of health, preventative care, rehabilitation and/ or palliative care and encourages the generation of new approaches to the delivery of expert care in different settings. Advanced Practice in Critical Care Nursing (N) This level 8 online course provides for specialist practice in critical care. The course explores essential theory underpinning practice that assists the registered nurse working in a critical care environment, to develop advanced practice knowledge and skills. Students will explore and critically analyze all aspects of the critical care environment that impact on patient care and professional practice. This includes clinical governance, multidisciplinary team collaboration and the legal and ethical issues related to the provision of care in a bioscience/technical situation. Psychiatric / Mental Health Nursing (N) This course provides for specialist practice in mental health nursing. It is designed to extend and develop the clinicians knowledge and skills necessary to work towards an advanced level of practice within the mental health field. The course builds on a foundation of clinical experience, theoretical understanding, research and evidence-based practice. It aims to prepare nurse specialists to advance their professional practice through therapeutic relationships, multidisciplinary cooperation and team work.

11 MN8.414 Blended/online delivery MN8.416 Blended/online delivery MN8.417 Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (I-D) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a practice-based course designed to enable a broad range of health and social service professionals to develop specialist advanced skills in CBT. The integrated use of theory, practice, and professional supervision from a clinical perspective will enable learners to critique and deliver therapeutic services for inpatient, outpatient, or community settings within the New Zealand context. Special Note: The student must work in a professional setting within a field that permits access to individuals, as clients, for whom cognitive behaviour therapy interventions may be appropriate. Students work with these individuals must be professionally supervised at a level that is consistent with the requirements of their setting. Supervision must also provide guidance and feedback as to the use of appropriate CBT concepts and methodology Clinical Supervision in the Health Professions (I-D) Professional supervision is a formalised reflective practice. It provides for the sharing of experiences, particularly to surface conflicts, tensions and ethical issues in professional practice. It is an important process that supports the development and maintenance of high quality practice, both for health and social service professionals and for clients. This course assists the practitioner to develop knowledge and skills for professional supervision. It is also relevant for those participating in, or who want to understand the supervision process. Advanced Diabetes Nursing (N) This course develops advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of diabetes mellitus within a primary care framework to an expert level. Practitioners are assisted to explore the context of diabetes mellitus in relation to the impact of this disease on an international as well as an individual perspective. Contemporary issues in relation to pathophysiology, diagnosis, facilitating clients to reach target goals, and holistic strategies to improve outcomes and prevent co-morbidities will be discussed. Practitioners completing this course would be capable of providing diabetic education and environments that support the patient/whanau with diabetes as well as primary prevention for the community. 60 8

12 MN8.418 MN8.419 Blended/online delivery MN8.423 MHS8.424 Advanced Primary Health Care (N/M) This course assists the registered nurse working in primary health, or who is particularly interested in primary health, to develop advanced practice knowledge and skills in primary health care. Students will reflect on, and critically analyse the theoretical basis of primary health nursing, with a strong focus on rural health. It is expected that nurses who complete this course will have developed necessary understandings and skills to influence health outcomes locally. Advanced Supervision Practice (I-D) This course builds on the knowledge and practice skills developed in Clinical Supervision in the Health Professions. Using current theories, models and approaches to supervision this course provides an opportunity for critical reflection on, and enhancement of, practice. Operational Management for Health Services (I-D) This course is intended for those already working in health service management as well as those considering the possibility of an operational management role. The course provides an overview of current operational management practices that are relevant to Health Services. Students participating in this course will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a critical way to their chosen area of practice. The course consists of several key areas in operational management. It provides the opportunity for the health professional to critically discuss and appraise operational management in health services. This course requires the health professional to reflect upon, evaluate and record their personal journey of development in operational health management practices and processes. Integrated Disease Management (I-D) This course provides an in-depth review of adult disease management, its impact on health care provision and the need for integrated care across all health disciplines and services. Students will reflect on disease management as a complete, rather than fragmented, approach to care, with an emphasis on risk assessment and early intervention that focuses on reducing morbidity in individuals with chronic illness. Teaching and learning approaches in the course allow students to examine disease management from their own professional, clinical, contextual and service orientations, thus allowing them to develop clinical and professional leadership skills commensurate with their scope and level of clinical practice.

The child/youth within the family as the centre of health care will be examined and explored from a wide range of perspectives and disciplines. Health and an Aging Population (I-D) This course recognises the diversity of the age group and the complex relationship between determinants of health, health status and well-being. Interdisciplinary Approaches to Mental Health (I-D) This course will investigate theoretical viewpoints and practical interventions in the field of mental health and the roles of interdisciplinary professionals when working with individuals or groups with mental health issues. Critical examination of aetiological factors, current practices and evaluation of research will provide insight towards planning interventions and reviewing current initiatives. Interdisciplinary Diabetes Management (I-D) This course develops theoretical and practical knowledge of diabetes mellitus within an interdisciplinary and primary health care framework. Students are assisted to explore the context of diabetes mellitus in relation to the impact of this disease on an international as well as an individual perspective. Contemporary issues in relation to pathophysiology, diagnosis, facilitating clients to reach target goals, and holistic strategies to improve outcomes and prevent comorbidities will be discussed. Students completing this course would be capable of providing diabetes education and therapeutic environments that support the person/family and community associated with diabetes.

Students will reflect on, and critically analyse the theoretical basis of primary health care, with a strong focus on rural health. Nutrition for Special Populations (I-D) This course will investigate nutritional requirements for special populations and the roles of inter disciplinary professionals when working with individuals or groups. Critical examination of lifestyle factors, nutritional practices and evaluation of current research will provide insight towards planning interventions and reviewing current initiatives. Health Promotion (I-D) This course enables the student to develop and extend knowledge and skills in health promotion policy, planning, practice and inter-organisational work with partners. Students will critically examine the theoretical, environmental, economic, and social issues in health promotion policy and practice within New Zealand and in an international context. A specific focus will be on addressing health disparities via health promotion. The course will move through topics related to healthy public policy; social and environmental change; health promotion assessment, development and evaluation; and medical approaches to health promotion such as social marketing and selective primary health care. Exercise Prescription for Special Populations (I-D) This course aims to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge of exercise testing and prescription for people within special populations, e.g. those with cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, neuro/muscular conditions; or other special populations such as athletes, elderly, pre- or post natal. Topics cover the aetiology and physiology of a range of conditions from an interdisciplinary perspective, the effects of exercise on the condition, and recommendations for exercise testing and programming. Health and Public Policy (I-D) This course provides students with the opportunity to explore the relationships between public policy and health. The course addresses several key aspects of public policy; models and frameworks, policy processes, and the role of Government. It provides the opportunity for students to critically discuss and appraise drivers for health policy and undertake a critical analysis of health policies. Students participating in this course will be able to apply their knowledge and skills in a critical way to their area of practice.

15 MHS8.435 Blended/online delivery Māori Health (I-D) This course enables the student to develop and extend knowledge and understandings of issues in Māori health from a community development and/or Māori health development perspective. An overview of Māori health will be explored, together with models for describing and analysing health. Students will critically review health strategies, programmes and interventions to reduce health inequalities among Māori with particular focus on research, ethical and policy issues related to Māori health.
