1 Organized by SQC & OR Unit, ISI, Kolkata INDIAN STATISTICAL INSTITUTE Symposium on Business Analytics December 17-18, 2014 Scope and Objective of the Symposium: With the advent of time, human decision making process has grown extremely complex because of conflicting attributes and multiple alternatives that are available to a decision problem. The data explosion that has happened in the last few years adds to this complexity and makes applications of Business Analytics imperative. Big Data plays a vital role as stakeholders are looking for multiple points of references for decision support. This also calls for applications of Business Analytics on both structured and unstructured data. Research in the field of Business Analytics can find its applications in major areas and can eventually contribute to the betterment of both the society and the economy at large. In today s world, data complexity has increased in every sphere of human intervention and calls for appropriate alignment of both academia and business to address the end-user concerns. Starting from business problems being addressed through the development of intelligent mathematical/statistical algorithms to the formulation of new and advanced methods that can help mankind to address social/health hazards both the areas call for experts in the field of Business Analytics but may be from completely different contexts of research/academia and business. The proposed symposium aims to bring together the experts in the field of Business Analytics and researchers/practitioners in statistics/mathematics/economics. The symposium will cover challenging thoughts in the space of concepts, theories and applications of Business Analytics for both structured and unstructured data management. The objective(s) of this symposium are two-fold: To create an environment and exchange ideas/methods on the different dimensions/perspectives of applications of Business Analytics; and To identify opportunities of collaboration between Academia and Industry for social and economic benefits of the humankind through improved and effective usage of Statistical/quantitative tools and Business Analytics practices.

4 About Indian Statistical Institute: Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a premier institute involved in carrying out research, teaching, training and consultancy in Statistics, Mathematics, Social Sciences, Computer and Communication, Biological Sciences, Physics and Earth Sciences and Statistical Quality Control & Operations Research. The institute has been declared by the Government of India as an institution of national importance by an act of the parliament in This act was amended by the Parliament in 1995 to empower the Institute to award Degrees/Diplomas not only in Statistics, but also in Mathematics, Quantitative Economics, Computer Science and Quality, Reliability and Operations Research. The institute has considerable experience in carrying out applied / empirical research as well as development of mathematical / statistical models for different technical / business systems. "Unity in Diversity" is the motto of the Institute. The diversity within the Institute is evident through plethora of scientific endeavors. The unity has been the unity of purpose - furthering of the discipline of statistics. It may be worthwhile to mention here that Professor P.C. Mahalanobis, the founder of Indian Statistical Institute, rightly deserves the credit not only for the birth of Statistics in India but also for its overwhelming development over the years. For more details, please visit About SQC & OR Division, ISI: The Institute also pioneered the development of Statistical Quality Control (SQC) in India. As early as in 1935, the Institute had recommended that the Government should take appropriate measures to initiate SQC methods in Indian industries. Walter A. Shewhart (the originator of SQC) came to India at the invitation of the Institute in , toured the country, held conferences and stimulated interest among Indian industrialists. The follow-up work done by the Institute led to the recognition of SQC as a useful technique in the industry and resulted in the formation of a network of SQC Units in India. The SQC & OR Division, set up in 1953, now operates with 8 units. The basic objective of the Division is to propagate the use of SQC & OR and allied management techniques for improving quality, enhancing productivity, reducing manufacturing cost and losses in industries. During the last four decades of its existence, this is realized through academic programmes, consultancy services, in-plant and general training course for industrial personnel, systems and software development, organizing conference, seminars and research in the methods and procedures of quality control, operations research and allied techniques. The Division runs a full-time PhD programme and its Kolkata Unit runs a two-year M.Tech programme in Quality, Reliability and Operations Research.
