1 LOYOLA COLLEGE (AUTONOMOUS), CHENNAI DEPARTMENT OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION THE STORY OF A MUSTARD SEED The seed was sown by Fr. A. J. Thamburaj, S.J., when he began 'Loyola Art Club' in the 1970s. Soon, the 'Club' grew into the Loyola Institute of Visual Communication (LIVCOM), offering a twoyear Diploma in Visual Communication as an evening programme from the year The welcome the programme received from the media industry led the Loyola management to go in for a fullfledged Degree in Visual Communication. Thanks to the efforts of Fr. Jeyapathy, S.J., the Director and his committed staff of Culture and Communication, Loyola College. Loyola became the first college to offer a Degree programme in the whole of India, and perhaps in Asia. That was in June The Department started offering M.Sc. Visual Communication from the year Now the department offers B.Sc. Visual Communication (shift-i and shift-ii) and M.Sc. Visual Communication (shift-ii) with the strength of over 350 students. The Department started offering yet another course, M.A. Media Arts (Oodakha Kalaihal) from Thanks to the efforts of Fr. Rajanayagam SJ and his colleagues. The medium of instruction is Tamil the vernacular of the region. The course aims at giving opportunity to the talented youth with a rural background to get trained as professionals for the Tamil media world. The department is now housed in a well-designed building School of Media Studies with the necessary facilities. Today LOYOLA VISCOM is proud to have spread its roots and wings all over the world through its alumni. You would bump into our alumni in every nook and corner of the world doing wonders in the media.
2 VISION The Department is committed to train culture conscious, development oriented, socially responsible citizens and committed media professionals. METHODOLOGY The Department has made innovations and hands-on methods of learning as its hallmark. Besides classroom instruction, students are constantly encouraged to attend/organise seminars, workshops and campaigns. BEST PRACTICES OF THE DEPARTMENT FOTALENT Fotalent has been an annual feature of the Department of Visual Communication, Loyola College from the year 1994, where students showcase their photographic works and paintings in Lalitkala Akademi, the art gallery of the city. Award winning cinematographers, editors and film directors, like Mr. Balumahendra, Mr. Lenin, Mr. P.C. Sreeram, Mr. Jeeva, Mr. Panneer Selvam, Ravi Varma and many other media celebrities have graced the occasion by their presence and have encouraged our students by judging the entries. ARTBEAT Artbeat is the annual festival of the department which brings together students of visual communication from the city colleges to interact and exhibit their talents. REELIVE This is an event where the department invite entries of PSA from students all over India and give awards for the best entries. The entries are judged by professionals of the media industry. MEDIA INTERACTIVE CREATIVITY SESSION (MICS) MICS is a platform for students to interact with leading media professionals. Media professionals are invited to interact with the students and share their experience to help students understand the industry. MEDIA MELA It is an opportunity offered especially to the final year students to showcase their creative talents by exhibiting all their projects at the end of the VI semester.
3 SEMINARS and CONFERENCE Organizing regional and national seminars is also part of the students' activity. International Seminar on Satellite Television and National Seminar on Jubilee India and Mass Media are some of the successful seminars organized by the department. During July 2009 the department conducted an International Conference Development communication in the Era of Globalization in collaboration with GCRA. CAMPAIGNS As part of the academic requirement students organise campaigns both within and outside the campus. Campaign on Plain Language Movement, Campaign on Child Facing the Third Millennium, Campaign on Life, and Campaign on Pause & Play, Right to Water, Right to Vote, Road Safety, Make a Difference (MAD) and Switch Off are some of the campaigns successfully planned and executed in the recent years. MEDIAGRAPH Mediagraph is a students monthly media journal entirely managed by students. The issues carry articles on topics related to media.
