2 Masters in INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS and MODERN LANGUAGES Why study International Business and Modern Languages at Strathclyde? International Business and Modern Languages (IBML) is an Integrated Masters degree programme designed for those who wish to acquire a firm foundation in essential business subjects at the same time as developing the ability to conduct business in a foreign language. An important feature of this degree is that it offers a broadly-based introduction to business subjects and other relevant skills while allowing you to specialise in your main business subject. During the first three years you combine the study of business subjects with modern languages. The language courses are designed to be Business relevant and Year 4 is spent at a business school overseas. Degree Structure The Integrated Masters in International Business and Modern Languages is differentiated from the other degrees on offer in the Business School by a specialised core curriculum in International Business. You can choose to follow two languages to Masters level or choose one language to Masters level and use the other language stream to study a selection of languages, eg Mandarin, German, alongisde your main language. 3 Year 4 The fourth year is spent at a business school in the country of your modern language, where you attend a prescribed set of classes in which you sit end-of-term/ year examinations. Year 4 of the Integrated Masters programme concentrates on providing students with the opportunity to enhance their fluency skills by studying overseas for one year at a partner institution. All classes are taken in the foreign language. We encourage students to take a wide selection of business subjects to enhance their understanding of International Business and cultural differences. This year enables students to see business from a different perspective, experience different teaching and learning methods and meet new friends from across the globe. Years 1-3 Each year centres around the core specialist classes in International Business and the Management Development Programme. In Year 1, in addition to International Business and Management Development, you choose two main languages, or one main language with an elective language to be studied for one year. You will also take two business subjects. In Years 2 and 3, you will continue with your chosen Business Subject and two main languages, or one main language with an elective language in each year. Year 5 In the final year of the Integrated Masters programme you undertake a dissertation in your chosen area of business this constitutes a major focus of your studies. Classes at this level are challenging, preparing you for the world of work and combining both your language ability and your international business specialisation. The language teaching is a bespoke programme for students following this degree, with emphasis on language for business. Assessment includes case study work, presentations, written and oral exams, essays, projects and the Masters research dissertation.
