8 Our degrees All courses in the Business School involve the study of organisations, their management and the changing environment in which they operate. While the precise blend of subjects studied depends on the particular course, each degree prepares you for a career in business, management and finance, as well as developing your skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis, critical thinking, oral and written presentation, information technology and group working. All courses also include modules studying the role of entrepreneurship in organisations and the majority consider the impact of business ethics on strategy formulation and decision-making. The Business School offers a variety of single honours degrees. Each of these courses has a particular focus while offering a multidisciplinary understanding of key business and management disciplines. Whichever degree you choose, you will also have the chance to select a number of optional modules alongside your core subjects, enabling you to tailor your degree to your particular interests. The range of subjects is extensive and includes modules in accounting and finance, business law, entrepreneurship, marketing, information systems, organisational theory, operations management, industrial economics, strategic management, human resource management and business ethics. For the majority of programmes, options can also be selected from other schools in the University. At Nottingham, you will study under a modular system, normally taking 12 modules each academic year, spread over two semesters. There are exams in January and May/June. On a number of modules, you will be required to complete coursework throughout the academic year, some of which is likely to be group work. Lectures form the basis of our teaching method, supported by a variety of additional teaching including tutorials, computer labs, workshops, simulations, case studies, presentations, and online support. Professional Accreditation Some of the modules you study at Nottingham on BA (Hons) Finance, Accounting and Management, BA (Hons) Management Studies and BSc (Hons) Accountancy will reflect the content of a number of professional accountancy and insurance bodies exams. As a result, you may be eligible for exemptions from some of these professional exams on the grounds that you have already demonstrated you understand the relevant content to the required standard. The Business School has accreditation agreements with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), the Professional stage of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and the Chartered Institute of Insurance (CII). The CII accreditation also includes the Industrial Economics programme. 6

22 Professional and Personal Development Professional development refers not only to your academic progression but also to the development of your business and employability skills. As the Skills and Development Manager, my main aim is to ensure that you settle into the School as quickly and easily as possible and to understand what is expected of you during your course. I am heavily involved in your induction sessions in the first week and I will meet with you all on the Professional Development for Leadership and Management Programme that you will all undertake in the first year. This programme will aid your transition into working independently at university, covering a variety of academic and practical business skills. Each week this will focus on a different skill including writing skills for business and academia, referencing and how to avoid plagiarism, using media for business, professional conduct, leadership and management skills. In addition to these formal sessions, you are more than welcome to book individual consultations with me when the need arises throughout your time at university. In your first semester, the School runs an essay competition and a group project competition to help you understand the standards you need in order to achieve a good degree. The essay competition provides you with an opportunity to obtain feedback on your work before it counts towards any grades. The winners are also awarded with some very generous prizes! I try to ensure that anyone who has an issue with their studies or who just wants a chat and some reassurance has someone approachable they can call on. I am available to see small groups or individuals on an appointment basis or, if my door is open, you can just drop in and always be assured of a warm welcome. Jackie Andrews Skills and Development Manager I am heavily involved in your induction sessions in the first week and I will meet with you all on the Professional Development for Leadership and Management Programme Jackie Andrews Skills and Development Manager 20
