1 Impact of Material Technologies and Applications WORKSHOP SCOPE The creation of an international workshop focussed on the use of cork material in architecture. It will provide an environment for researchers, architects, designers as well as those in the industry and other interested parties to meet and develop ideas and experiments using cork Workshops will be held annually (in July) proposing different challenges every year. In the future, it will be a platform for the internationalization of the use of cork as a building envelop material. It will run in a three year cycle, organized by themes, according to the type of materials/prototypes that are going to be tested or developed during each workshop: This is our second year workshop and we will focus on the use of composite materials. This workshop is a continuation of last year workshop dedicated to natural cork materials. Last year we started with: Workshop One: Year One July 2015: Natural Cork - Tradition: Gain an appreciation and understanding Cork as a material. Understanding traditional methods in the use of Cork and learn from that experience. Conduct explorations with natural cork or products using only natural cork, to understand its potentialities and possible applications as a building envelop. Extend research into recycling of residuals of natural cork from the primary use of the industry in cork stoppers. This year we are going to concentrate on: Workshop Two: Year two July 2015: Composite Cork Materials - Industry: Know the industrial cork processing chain and the composite cork products. Reach an understanding of the actual needs and business of the cork industry. Selection and characterization of cork products and their use changes, i.e. with aging and weathering, with a selection of performance-related indicators Conduct experiences involving the industry, overcoming potentialities of their materials for future applications on building envelop. Next year we are going to organize: Workshop Three: Year three July 2016: New Materials - Future Technologies: Understand current architectural practices while anticipating possible future needs. This will require a two year research period for studying materials already developed but not yet in the market. New materials and technologies will be developed and proposed by the architects that may lead to commercialization by the industry in the future. 1/4

3 WORKSHOP ONE, DESCRIPTION: The workshop is divided into two phases: 1st Phase 2 weeks and a half: The first two weeks are focusing on testing possible applications for natural cork, 100% cork materials and products made exclusively with natural cork. Each team of 5 participants, are expected to developed prototypes understanding the potentialities and applicability of natural cork as a building envelop. The use of cork as an exterior material will be organized in three Themes: a) Cork as a membrane (M) b) Cork as a cladding finishing (C) c) Cork as a self-supporting material (SS) It is also possible to extend the research for the upcycle of leftovers of natural cork from the primary use of the industry in cork stoppers and cork discs. It is also possible that a few students will concentrate in the research of new composite materials using cork mixed with natural materials. At the end of this phase a few prototypes will be selected at least one of each theme to be used in the second phase of the workshop. 2nd Phase 2 weeks and a half: The following two and a half weeks will be spent attempting to address the complexity of the construction from the material point of view. The prototypes developed and selected on the first phase will be used and tested. The participants will be organized in groups of 10. It is expected that each group constructs an architectural element such as: wall, ceiling or others. It is also possible to construct a small shelter. PARTICIPANTES ORGANIZATION: 1st Phase 2 weeks and a half: Participants will be organized in 4 groups of 5 and it will be assigned different tasks every four days 3 tasks total. Each group should test prototypes using the themes defined. Every four days they have to summarize the research and report the development of the work to the assignment reviewers. These presentations are to be compiled into a single document and submitted to the instructor at the end of each task (both in digital format, as well as paper printout.). The work is mainly developed in a physical model form. 2nd Phase 2 weeks and a half: Participants will be organized in 4 groups of 16 and they will be assigned to design produce and construct an architectural element or shelter. Guests will join each group and they will make comments in order to help to develop the work. The constructions will be display out door at the FA school in designated locations. At the end it will be a presentation where the students show panels with their design and the construction they made. They should clarify in a single document (both in digital format, as well as paper printout.) which were the achievements, and qualities of their proposal having into account the material relevance.
