2 VECTOR E 2005: PROGRAM INFORMATION Purpose The main objective of the Program is to provide engineering students and researchers with entrepreneurial skills complementary to their technological and scientific education. The program guides participants through a range of issues that cover the entrepreneurship process from idea to business, including opportunity screening, market research, competitive market analysis, product and process development and management, financial planning, financial sources, and internationalization. More than just simply pursuing the objective of planning creating start-ups, this program is about thinking and acting like an entrepreneur i.e. to motivate advanced technology students to focus on recognizing and evaluating opportunities, locally and globally, permanently challenging established paradigms, while improving their strategic business capabilities, teamwork talents, and generally promoting the creation of a culture of innovation. Focus The primary focus of the program is to accompany those students and participants who have either a concrete entrepreneurial idea or a strong entrepreneurial ambition. The program is structured in a way that it provides theoretical knowledge about the typical challenges encountered in the entrepreneurial process, while following a process-based approach in which entrepreneurial teams present and improve their ideas to various lecturers and specialists, thus receiving feedback that is specific to their own idea. Admission Primarily designed for graduate and senior undergraduate students in engineering sciences, the admission to VECTOR E is selective and requires candidates to have a technologicallybased idea or project for which they want to develop or improve a business plan, in order to both attract investors and provide a guide for the implementation of their idea. 1

3 Requirements Students will be expected to prepare thoroughly for, and actively participate in class discussions, presenting ever-improving versions of their idea/pitch to each new lecturer for comments. Three hours preparing the class and another three hours working on business plan elaboration and improvement are expected. In addition to session attendance and preparation, students must submit an opportunity analysis report and, by the end of the Program, a complete business plan. The best ideas and plans are then chosen to be presented before a jury of specialists and potential investors at a final business plan contest - the VECTOR E Competition. Organization The Program includes two types of sessions: Classes/Training Sessions: s, 6:00 9:00 pm: Presentation and discussion of tools, frameworks and models; case studies; expert knowledge and professional practice; including comments to students presentations of their business ideas. Location: and ; Field Trips: Wednesdays, 6:00 8:00 pm: Visits to NTBFs, with company presentation and guided visit. Location: selected new technology based companies. Languages Portuguese and English, depending on the lecturer. VECTOR E Competition At the end of the program, selected business ideas/plans by students taking part in the VECTOR E Competition are presented to a panel of academic/business specialists and potential investors, who awards prizes to the best ideas.
