Molecular characterization of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) landraces from Portugal, Cabo Verde and Angola, using SSRs markers Manuela Veloso et al Instituto Nacional de Recursos Biológicos L-INIA, Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, Instituto de Investigação Científica e Tropical, Centro Nacional de Recursos Fitogenéticos (Angola)
Sustainable management of miombo woodlands in the Northern part of Mozambique (Niassa Reserve) Natasha Ribeiro et al Sociedade para a Gestão e Desenvolvimento da Reserva do Niassa and Faculdade de Agronomia e Engenharia Florestal (Mozambique), Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, Bioversity International (CGIAR)
Village-level market-driven rice intensification - a sustainable model in the Zambezi province of Mozambique Carlos Zandamela et al IRRI (CGIAR), Maputo Delegation, Instituto de Investigação Agrária de Moçambique, Faculdade de Agronomia e Engenharia Florestal (Mozambique), Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical
Criteria 1. Clearness (rationale, objective and approach) 2. Innovation 3. Scientific approach, valuing technical and socioeconomic linkages 4. Impact for society
Award (ex aequo) Miombo woodlands (Ribeiro et al) Rice intensification (Zandamela et al) Honorable Mention Characterization of common bean (Veloso et al)
Miombo woodlands Most important type of vegetation in Southern Africa Mozambique: 80% of the rural households depend on it for land and products main source of high value commercial timber species
Environmental and social relevance: Home to million Africans across 7 countries Fuel wood and/or charcoal, traditional medicines, food, commercial products Add to global biodiversity Global impact (emissions of trace gases from fires, soils, vegetation and animals and carbon and biomass sequestration) Key role in the regional and global, energy, water and carbon balances AND rural development strategies
Miombo woodlands Project To promote the sustainable management of miombo woodlands in Niassa National Reserve (NNR) in northern Mozambique, through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach. NNR embodies the largest and most pristine conservation area of miombo woodlands in Southern Africa, being the largest and wildest conservation area of miombo woodlands in the world. Beneficiaries: local communities, NNR technicians, Researchers
Miombo woodlands Expected Results and outputs Identification and selection of priority species Fire history reconstitution: fire cycles vs climate changes Fire monitoring (LTP, including biophysical and social issues) Carbon sequestration: soil and vegetation stocks vs fire freq Characterization of genetic resources: understanding fire resistance Management and Conservation strategy Capacity building: local communities, technicians, researchers
Village-level market-driven rice intensification ca 90% from small landholders, who farm less than 0.5ha major constraints: poor in-crop management availability of good seed water and weed control high post-production losses (harvesting and processing) lack of rural labor limited access and knowledge of rice markets rice demand higher than actual production - Mozambique government is committed to increasing rice production
Village-level market-driven rice intensification Project To reduce poverty and improve the livelihoods of poor rice producers and consumers in the Zambezi Province of Mozambique To document a proven model of a sustainable rice business by increasing the quantity, quality and financial return for 200 farmers (50% rice production and 30% market value) Beneficiaries: farmers, university students, extension staff, millers, dealers, suppliers and manufacturers
Village-level market-driven rice intensification Expected Results and Outputs Favorable operational environment Rice farming as a business Implementation of farmers plans Building national research and development capacity
