4 PROJECT DESCRIPTION PATIO 2.12, the proposal of Andalucia Team for Solar Decathlon Europe 2012, is a prototype of self-sustaining prefabricated modular house which develops a new interpretation of materials and spaces on traditional andalusian construction, specially focused on the patio. PATIO 2.12 is built by addition of completely finished prefabricated modules, transported by road for their assemblage on the chosen site, which use the patio space as a connection element between them. These finished prefabricated modules do not constitute the whole house, a constructive element or a room; it is just a complex module or group of functions, where uses are mixed and shared (cooking-eating, relax-study, resting-washing). The intermediate scale of prefabrication system used on the prototype produces an attractive, flexible and adaptable house. Housing self-design becomes possible. User could choose between a list of spaces already prepared with all the necessary equipment and technologies, and organize them at his will around the flexible element: the patio. As it happens in the traditional andalusian house, the patio is also the centre and heart of the home, housing several functions and developing an inside/outside relationship which makes a gradient on the comfort conditions possible. Recreating the pleasing conditions of a Mediterranean space by modulating light and shade, humidity, temperature and even smell and sound. Recent project development: During the last one and a half month, Andalucia Team has developed a process of consolidation of its group structure. As a first step, the four technical schools involved in the project signed a Collaboration Agreement officially appointing Javier Terrados Cepeda general team director. Once the institutional structure was established, directors have selected the researchers and decathletes working in the project, also choosing a manager for each school as the person responsible for the advances of his or her group and as a representative in the periodical work meetings. Three work meetings of Andalucia Team have already taken place between the managers, where they have defined the assignments of each group and expressed the goals achieved and the doubts arisen. The design process fruit of these meetings has got the following conclusions: 1. The prototype size has been adapted to a beam-lorry transport system small enough not to need technical special studies of the route or police escort for the trip. This has produced the following changes on the form of PATIO 2.12: - Height and plan proportions of the housing models have changed. 3

5 - Housing modules do not share a common roof plane any more. Now they have the same inclination but different roof planes. - The pergola roof over the patio area is now horizontal reaching a higher level of flexibility by admitting any height or distribution of the housing modules. 2. The prototype envelope will have just one finishing material. Same ceramics will be used both on blind areas and windows, modifying their transparency and turning them into a lattice. 3. Water elements will be developed on the exterior area as a cooling strategy for the resting area, as a usual resort of the traditional Andalusian garden for the surroundings of the house. 4. A preliminary design for the photovoltaic system has been approved, based on the flexibility which characterizes PATIO The development of this proposal has focused the work to a conciliation of size, height and distances between the modules to fit the panels. We should point out the growth of the technical box which has finally assumed the role of the place for machines as a space shared between users and equipment also related to the clothing cycle including storage, washing, drying and ironing. The progress made on the dissemination activities: 1. An expert decathlete specialized on communication has been selected for the design of internet broadcasting strategies, who has initiated the following activities: - Andalucia Team website has been updated according to proposal advances and new team structure. - A Facebook profile has been created for team news, meetings scheadule, broadcasting events and SDE releases to be published. - A twitter account has been also created for similar reasons where all members and followers can freely twit their impressions about the project. 2. The team has published information brochures delivered as a presentation for Andalucia Team and PATIO 2.12 for diffusion and sponsor search. The brochure has a double format design: A diptych for digital platforms, and a triptych for paper publishing. 3. The team has also produced information panels and automatic computer presentations as diffusion material for stands present on thematic fairs related to SDE. 4. The organization has produced two 2 metres high banderoles with an integrated light structure, to be assembled and disassembled on site on every diffusion event taking place. 4

PATIO 2.12 has been presented by the general team director in two events of great media repercussion in Andalucia: - SILCS (Strategies for Innovative Low Carbon Settlements) workshop, taking place in Seville on March 23th and 24th Ecohabitat: Showroom for sustainable architecture, planning and air conditioning, taking place in Jaen on April 7th and 9th 2011, where Andalucia Team had a stand of its own. COLLABORATING INSTITUTIONS AND SPONSORING COMPANIES The Project of PATIO 2.12 counts with the participation of Universities from Sevilla, Jaen, Granada and Malaga. Managers from Andalucia Team are developing a campaign oriented in order to obtain funding for the project according to three main goals: 1. Public institutions: - The team had a meeting with the vice-director of the Regional Department of Public Works of the Government of Andalucia who ratified the collaboration for the project. - The team had also a meeting with the director of the Local Housing Company of Seville. 2. Centers for technology in Andalucia: The team has organized a symposium for the presentation of the project to all the Centers for Technology of Andalucia on April 26 th at the Architecture School of Seville. The 12 existing centers have expressed their interest to collaborate with the team. 3. Private companies Several companies interested on participating in the Project as sponsors had meetings with the managers offering funding possibilities or equipment and components with no cost for the construction of PATIO Most of the contacting companies come from the industry field of construction materials such as ceramic panels, framing, electric products or lighting. 5
