1 PE at The Redway School PE at The Redway School includes a wide range of activities to ensure that all pupils benefit from the experience. Our pupils enjoy expressing and testing themselves in a variety of situations. Pupils learn through watching, listening, experimenting and developing their skills in movement and co-ordination. The pupils develop their understanding, learn and participate in a variety of activities e.g. games, dance, gymnastics, boccia, athletics, outdoor adventure and challenge, swimming etc. PE at The Redway is challenging but realistic to ensure that all students succeed and enjoy PE. We also work closely with the physiotherapists and ensure that both programmes work along side each other to maximize the benefit to the students. The school is also part of the School Sports Co-ordinator Programme (SSCo) where the Government is driving for every pupil to receive two hours quality PE in the curriculum and beyond. We are part of the Special School Family and work together on a variety of projects such as policies, planning, assessment and activities that support will support PE in the schools. We also have the opportunity to attend a variety of courses which supports the teachers, specialist and non-specialists, in developing their own knowledge and confidence in delivery PE. Foundation and Nursery PE in Foundation and Nursery is developed through play and other activities such as: Gymnastics ( including use of soft play, Sherbourne ) Games including ball games Movement and dance Swimming/ hydrotherapy Use of small and large equipment: Outdoor activities including use of bikes/ push along toys, play areas including those in parks/ riding Indoor including Play- manipulating small objects/ toys/ water play etc The students develop co-ordination including body awareness, manipulation, movement and control.

2 Primary, Secondary, Post 16 (Key Stage 1-4) PE in Primary, Secondary and Post 16 is developed and enhanced through the main strands of PE; Gymnastics, including use of soft play Swimming, including hydrotherapy Games, including tabletop and team games Athletics Outdoor Adventure and Challenge, including horse riding Dance The students develop balance, strength, speed, stamina and fitness (recognising the need to keep healthy and fit). At Key Stage 4, PE is also developed through leisure activities in the Community such as gym and golf. The students learn how to access the facilities and how to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner. Also included in their curriculum is yoga and aromatherapy.

3 Off Site Activities The students throughout the school also participate in off site activities. The school works in partnership with local providers to give the students other experiences outside of the school environment. This includes horse riding and swimming in a larger pool for more able students. We also take students to Woodhill Prison where they participate in physical activity such as team games, trampolining, parachute games and obstacle races. This is lead by the Physical Training Instructors and supported by inmates. Extra Curricular Activities The school offers a vast range of extra curricular activities. The staff at the school lead some of the clubs but we also have instructors and clubs that deliver the sessions too. We feel it is important to make links with outside sport providers so the students can experience a variety of activities. It also gives the students the opportunity to meet the club coaches and then continue participating at the clubs if they wish to. We currently have two lunch time clubs, Boccia and Trampolining. The students attend for a term and then other students are offered the opportunity to attend. The Boccia Club takes place on Mondays and is lead by a qualified volunteer and each week a small trophy is awarded to the student who has tried the hardest. The Trampoline Club runs on Thursdays which is run by the PE Co-ordinator and the student s progress is monitored.

4 The Redway School also offers the students the opportunity to participate in after school clubs. The Tuesday Club is open to secondary and Post 16 students and activities have included Yoga, Basketball, Dancing and Sailing. The Thursday club is called The Redway and Langland Integrated Sports Club. It was a joint partnership between the two local schools. The idea was to raise the awareness of the schools to the students and to get them working together at the sports club. It involves primary students from The Redway School and Year 6 students from Langland Combined School. It has proven to be really successful and the Langland students are very supportive. The activities at the club have included basketball, swimming, yoga and trampolining.

5 Festivals Through the School Sports Co-ordinator Programme and the County Disability Officer the school has been involved in a number festivals including, badminton, boccia, kwick cricket, basketball, golf and dance. The festivals have allowed primary, secondary and post 16 students to participate along with other students from special schools. The students really enjoy attending the festivals and improve their skills both in the activity and personal such as communication and team work. It also allows our students to participate in sport in different environments. Duke of Edinburgh We have run the Duke of Edinburgh s Award Scheme for a couple of years for some of our older students. Last year the students did really well with 5 students receiving the Bronze Award and 5 students receiving sectional Certificates. As part of the scheme the students have to learn a new sport, help other people, learn a new skill such as cooking and take part in an exploration. It gives the students a chance to further develop independence skills and work as part of a team.

6 Residentials We also run residentials each year for our students. Last year we ran the Activity Week for secondary students and a Sailing Residential for Post 16 students. At the Activity Week the students were involved in day activities and some also had the chance to sleepover. The activities included sailing, canoeing, caving, walking and games that took place both indoors and out. It was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to be involved in activities that they may not have otherwise got the chance to do. Both the staff and students really enjoyed the residential. Sailing is a popular activity at The Redway School and we have a good working relationship with staff at the Caldecotte Project where we attend our sailing sessions. For the last two years students have had a fantastic opportunity to attend a Sailing Residential where they have experienced sailing on a yacht. The students sailed from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight and had the opportunity to be involved in helping sail, including steering the boat. They were also involved in helping with meals and keeping the boat clean and tidy. The students also visited HMS Victory, went bowling and enjoyed a meal at a restaurant. Everyone had a fantastic time and would recommend it to other students, staff, friends and family!
