8 Sponsored Activities Definitions Approval/Disapproval = On campus activity has been pre-approved for this age level. No further action required. Off campus activities and transportation remain subject to approval in accordance with transportation and field trip policies. = Activity May be approved on a case by case basis subject to review by Risk Management and the appropriate department. Requests should be submitted 3-4 weeks in advance of the requested activity date. Grey Box = Activity not applicable, not appropriate or not allowed at this age level. WIAA (High ) or SPS Athletics (Middle ) Sanctioned Approved Curriculum Playground/Playfield After Open Gym Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association sports and activities for High students and Seattle Public s Athletics Department sanctioned sports for Middle students are conducted under strict supervision of trained and certified physical educators, and coaches. All organized sports must comply with the WIAA and SPS Athletics standards. When applicable the SPS Transportation policy also applies. Accepted departmental study course or element. All curriculum activities must meet the departmental standards. A written curriculum for each activity (study element) must be on file on site. Activities marked with a require PE department approval or teacher certification. Field Trip and Transportation Policies apply for all off campus curriculum activities. Discretionary free play activities with general supervision and general safety standards. Organized and/or team sports normally requiring personal protective equipment or which include aggressive physical contact are not allowed during free play unless they are supervised by the Physical Education teacher or coach. Where applicable, proof of instructor certification/qualification may also be required. Activities may also require WSRMP review and/or a site visit prior to approval. These activities are either not covered by our insurance carrier or the risk of serious injury outweighs the educational benefit of the activity. With proper justification and documentation an activity on this list may be placed in the "High Risk" category.
