October 25 Family Dance 6-8PM From The Principal... Thank you to all parents who participated in the Fall Fundraiser. We are truly grateful for your support. Please mark your calendars, as the tentative date for cookie dough pick up is Wednesday, November 20 th. On a different note, I would like to introduce our PTO and SIC board members. Our PTO board is responsible for coordinating fundraisers, family events such as the Family Dance and Cougar Carnival, and our Holiday shop. The money that we raise from our PTO fundraising comes directly back to our school. Our SIC is our School Improvement Council. This group of parents and community members collaborates closely with the staff and administrators at Bridge Creek to make the best decisions for our school. When you see members of our PTO or SIC board, thank them for helping to make our school AWESOME! The Counselor s Corner... Camp Hands of Hope Camp Hands of Hope is a weekend family retreat for children ages 5-18 and their families who have experienced the death of a close friend or family member in the past two years. Under the guidance of professional bereavement staff and volunteers, Mrs. Kristen Eubanks these families will have the opportunity to meet with others who have experienced similar losses, to share memories and participate in activities to help navigate them through the grief journey. The camp is scheduled for November 1 st -3 rd at the White Oak Conference Center outside Columbia. There is a $50.00 registration fee per family but scholarships are available for those families who need assistance. Meals, snacks, and sleeping accommodations are provided. If interested, call for registration materials. Mrs. Jeanie Sullivan PTO Board Members: Courtney Paul Stephanie Sulton Monique Jackson Earl Hudgins Lorainne Keefe Lindsay Shuford Nicole Hunter Whitney Jones Carlos Wilson Kristen Eubanks SIC Board Members: Bill McCracken Keisha Chatman Edward Burgess Evangelina Hemphill Selina Latimore Ruby Sutton Pamela Hicks Taurean Robinson Whitney Jones Carlos Wilson Cougar Readers Cougar Leaders What do good readers do? Good readers use pictures, their knowledge of sounds and letters, letter blends and the shapes of words, experience of subject matter and the flow of language to help them make sense of the text that is laid before them. Reading is very much a holistic experience for them and they look for meaning in the words they read. They also self correct - if something doesn't make sense, they will try it again and go back and correct themselves. What happens with poor readers? Typically, poor readers don't look for what the text means. They look at it letter by letter, word by word. They don't use all the clues in the surrounding print and by the time they get to the end of the sentence, all meaning is lost. They haven't grasped the flow of language or looked for meaning in other areas of the text, such as pictures etc. The reader then gets caught up in a vicious circle whereby because they are not good at it, they don't do it often enough which then makes it even harder for them to catch up.
