1 Principal s Message Dean Jennissen Calendar of Events March Dear Parents, Students and Families, Health Fair On Wednesday, March 19th we will be hosting a Health Fair in the East Gym. Students will be trained on Hands-Only CPR. Area Emergency responder teams and volunteers will team up to instruct more than 700 students and staff how to quickly identify cardiac arrest, give chest compressions, and use an AED (defibrillator). Students will also have the opportunity to listen to the personal story of a cardiac arrest survivor. The community is welcome to attend the Health Fair from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Senior Privilege Extended in Trimester III Seniors will now have the opportunity to leave school at 2:35 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays if they meet the previously established criteria. There are a couple of exceptions. On Wednesday, March 19th we need the Seniors to stay for the Health Fair and during MCA testing on April 15th and 16th we will not have our FLEX schedule, so Seniors will need to stay at school. When we have Seniors stay for at school for an activity we will swap out the Monday and/or the Thursday of that week. We appreciate the great work the Class of 2014 is doing! Senior Dates Please review the Calendar of Events. Many are for Seniors as is much of the information in Mr. Tool s section. It is an exciting time for our Seniors as they start the count down to Commencement! Spring Conferences Thursday, April 24th from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Parents and students are invited to attend our final formal opportunity for face-to -face communication on student progress. We look forward to seeing you! Registration The Guidance Office has been working hard on scheduling students for the school year. Our goal is to have a completed schedule for all students by the last day of the school year. Stay the Course Trimester III always brings a few challenges to us as students become a bit more antsy for graduation and summer break. It has been an outstanding school year with great focus from our students. It has also been a safe school year overall in terms of driving and good choices from our students on the nights and weekends. We are looking for continued focus from our students and appreciate the support we receive from our outstanding families! Let s have a safe and productive spring! Driver Ed. 2 Dean of Students Message DCHS News Dennis Abernathy Greetings from DCHS! What a year of successes! It seems we are announcing great performances, high rankings, and state-bound students on a weekly basis. It is truly a joy to see the students achieving at such a high level. Spring (green grass) is right around the corner which is evident as Mr. Ellis Home Construction class is happy to be outside again! Please review the following notices with your students for a successful spring: Attendance: It is extremely important for your student to be in attendance every day through the last day of school. Please contact the high school office in the event your student is sick or if he/she is going to be absent. Also, follow the call with a written note as soon as possible. Last, please try to schedule student appointments after/before school and schedule any family vacations during Spring Break which is March Dress Code: Please review and discuss the DCHS dress code section of the student handbook (p.25) with your student. Attire, which is unsafe, unhealthy, disruptive, obscene and/or offensive to generally accepted community standards, is prohibited. Conferences: I am always available to speak with families, parents, students about any concerns during conferences. This trimester s conferences are held on April 24, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. MCA-III Testing in Reading (10 th grade) and Math (11 th grade) is on April 15th and 16th: It is important that all students attend school on these dates. During these testing dates please avoid making student appointments, especially before noon. If your student is absent on the above dates, the test make-up dates are 17th and 18 th for both Reading and Math. It is a great idea to talk with your student about any potential test anxieties and please call me if you need assistance. Get plenty of rest and eat a good breakfast on both days. A granola snack and drink will be available to students. The first round of MCA-III Science will be on March 17 th and 18 th for all students completing their Biology progression at the end of Trimester 2. Students who remain in Biology for Trimester 3 will be tested on May 15 th. DCHS Summary of Student Attendance Procedures and Policies for Upcoming State Tournament Events: D-C students and families intending to view or participate in upcoming state tournament events are strongly encouraged to read the attendance policies on pages 8-12 in the student agenda book and on the Handbook link posted on the left side menu of the high school website. 4 School Nurse Message DCHS News Annette Bohnsack Norovirus or Influenza? Flu season is upon us along with another illness that is very common this time of the year- Norovirus. People often refer to it as the stomach flu. However, it is not a type of influenza at all. Here are some of the differences between Norovirus and Influenza: Norovirus -The #1 cause of gastrointestinal illness -Symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain -Spreads VERY easily. People are contagious upon onset of symptoms to at least 3 days and sometimes up to 2 weeks after recovery. -Often mistaken for flu or food-poisoning Influenza -Viral infection of the nose, throat and lungs -Symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, sore throat and cough -Mainly spread through the air when a person coughs or sneezes -The flu shot protects against this illness; it does not prevent symptoms of Norovirus Norovirus and Influenza do have one thing in common- The best defense against BOTH is to wash your hands often and well! Reminder: Children should stay home from school for 24 hours after an episode of vomiting, diarrhea or fever.
