Abriendo Paso Grammar practice book Course Description: The course is designed to provide an extensive review of Spanish grammar and literature. It offers advanced grammar study and acquisition through communicative-based activities, reading and dialogue and essay writing. Listening activities and videos supplement the course. STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO SPEAK SPANISH EVERY DAY. The goal of the course is 90% Spanish usage in class. College credit may be earned through La Roche College provided payment of fees has been completed and the student maintains a C average in the course.

2 Course Objectives: By the end of this course, the successful student will be able to: 1. demonstrate the ability to listen effectively; to read and think critically; and to express ideas clearly through spoken communication and writing, by exposure to and practice of the skills presented in the course. 2. demonstrate awareness and knowledge of the role that the individual and the community both play in Spanish/Hispanic language and culture. 3. demonstrate an understanding of Spanish language and culture, and their role in the world. 4. read, comprehend and discuss literary and related texts in a variety of formats in the target language. Academic Honesty: Any work submitted by the student shall be his/her own. Work taken from others shall be deemed as unacceptable. Any doubts will initiate the completion of an alternative assignment or a zero on the required effort, depending on the severity of the infraction. *Students are to rely on their own knowledge of the language and are not to use translation aps or online services to complete assignments. Class Policies and Expectations: 1. Students must arrive to class on time. 2. Students are required to bring their textbook, notebook, agenda book and a writing utensil to class. 3. Students must respect their fellow students and the teacher at all times. Speaking out, disrupting class and harassing other students will not be tolerated. 4. Students are expected to use the restroom before entering the classroom. 5. Students are not permitted to use cell phones or other electronic devices during class. 6. Students must complete all missed assignments as soon as possible. It is the students responsibility to speak with the teacher concerning this matter. After two weeks, students will receive a 0. (See student handbook.) Tests/quizzes are to be made up before or after school. Disabilities: If you have a disability that requires special accommodations, you need to notify the teacher no later than the 2 nd week of class.

3 Course Grading Criteria: All quizzes, tests, and projects will be graded according to the Belle Vernon Area School District grading policy. Total points will be accumulated for all evaluated efforts in this class rather than having letter grades per each effort. The grading scale is as follows: A B C D F Emphasis will be on formal assessments. Therefore, grades will be weighted. Formal assessments will account for 90% of a student s grade. (tests, projects, presentations etc.) Informal assessments will account for 10% of a student s grades. (homework completion checks, in-class comprehension checks) Assignments per Quarter: Students will be graded on homework completion, quizzes and test scores, in class writing assignments and activities in pairs/small groups, presentations, skits, recitations and projects. In addition to those assignments, students will be required to blog once a week on the Belle Vernon Area Website. The following participation rubric will be used. Students will be randomly assessed twice a week using the guidelines below. The rubric has been explained in class. 12 pts per week Hablo español y evito distracciones. 4 *Assignments or assessments may vary due to pace of class and individualized instruction. Academic Standards: Students will be reacquainted with the Pennsylvania Academic Standards that have been adopted by the Department of Education, along with the Common Core Standards that are in the process of being implemented nationwide. Students will be made aware of the importance of the standards and the efforts to meet them. Edline: Grades will be updated every Friday on Edline.
