2 Foreign Languages - Latino Studies Course Description Booklet -- Fall 2015 Learn the language, learn about the culture Courses Offered by the Foreign Languages Program All courses fulfill the foreign language/foreign culture core requirement Spanish 260 and 315 fulfills the literature/fines arts requirement. Arabic 101, and 103 fulfill Middle Eastern Minor requirements. Elementary Spanish, Intermediate Spanish, Spanish 200, 260 and 315 and FYS fulfill Latino Studies Minor requirements. Check on Claws for the designation of the courses listed in this booklet as: Global Studies, Diversity Studies and Level II requirements ************************************************************************ Spanish Minor Students wishing to obtain a minor in Spanish must complete with a grade of C or above a total of 18 credit hours in Spanish, beginning at the intermediate level ( ). No more than 3 hours taught in English. ************************************************************************ Language courses All language courses have a strong oral component. Students taking language classes at Saint Xavier for the first time are required to take a placement exam before the beginning of the semester. Contact the Advising and Educational Planning Services office for placement information. 1
3 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE ASL 101: American Sign Language I See Schedule Below Pre-requisite: None An introductory course to American Sign Language (ASL). The course includes basic grammar, vocabulary, fingerspelling, numbers and cultural information related to the Deaf Community. 01: Annmarie Mead 2:00pm ~ 3:20pm T TH 02: Annmarie Mead 5:00pm ~ 6:20pm T TH LATINO STUDIES LS : Intro. To Latino Studies 6:30pm ~ 9:20pm W Juanita Del Toro This course will focus on the core concepts of Latino/Latin American Studies: The historical development of Latin America and the United States, colonization, migration, early North American experiences and contemporary issues in Latino communities here in the U.S. In English. POLISH Polish : Sp. Topics: Polish for Speakers of Polish Anna Gąsienica Byrcyn 12:30pm ~ 1:50pm T TH Excellent choice to fulfill a Global Studies requirement for all majors, particularly former students of Polska Szkoła Sobotnia. A course that allows heritage speakers of Polish to reactivate the Polish they have learned previously and develop it further, to learn more about their language and cultural heritage, to acquire Polish literacy skills and to develop or augment Polish academic language skills in order to enhance future career opportunities. Polish : Polish Culture & Civilization 11:00am ~ 12:20pm T TH Alex Kurczaba Excellent choice to fulfill a Global Studies requirement for all majors, particularly former students of Polska Szkoła Sobotnia. Course Description Designed to acquaint students with basic characteristics and major trends of Polish life, culture and civilization. Students will study how Polish culture was shaped by exploring the many components that represent and influence it, such as religion, music, painting, literature and politics. In English. 2
4 SPANISH Spanish 101: Elementary Spanish I See Schedule Below Prerequisite: Placement exam or no previous study of Spanish. An introduction to Spanish for students who have had no previous study of the language that places equal emphasis on listening comprehension, oral expression, and grammar. Basic grammatical structures are presented: agreement of subjectadjective, subject-verb, present tense of the indicative, adverbs and pronouns, etc. Course work includes: recitation and written exercises, videos, workbooks and reading of simple texts, as well as cultural information about the Spanish-speaking world. Course requirements: chapter exams, quizzes and a comprehensive final exam. 01: Kelsey Kuzniewski 10:00am ~ 10:50am MWF 02: Kelsey Kuzniewski 11:00am ~ 11:50am MWF 03: Fabiola Marolda 1:00pm ~ 1:50pm MWF Spanish : Elementary Spanish II 12:00pm ~12:50pm MWF Fabiola Marolda Prerequisite: Spanish 101 or placement exam. A second semester study of Spanish for students who have a basic knowledge of the language. The course places equal emphasis on listening comprehension, oral expression, vocabulary and grammar. Grammatical structures presented include: preterit and imperfect tenses, the verb gustar, stem-changing verbs in the present and past tenses, por and para, past participles, present and past perfect tenses, and an introduction to the uses of the subjunctive mood. Course work includes: recitation and written exercises, comprehension exercises, workbooks, reading of simple texts in Spanish as well as cultural information about the Spanish-speaking world. Course requirements include: chapter exams, quizzes and a comprehensive final exam. Spanish : Intermediate Spanish I 10:00am ~ 10:50am MWF Fabiola Marolda Prerequisite: Spanish 102 or placement exam. This language course is a combination of grammar review, vocabulary development and a strong oral component. The course is articulated around the Nuevos destinos program. Follow Raquel, an LA lawyer, in her trip to different destinations in Spain and Latin America to unravel the mysteries of a Spanish-Mexican family. Material for the class will include short detective novels. Course requirements: chapter exams, quizzes and a comprehensive final exam. 3
5 Spanish : Intermediate Spanish II 11:00am ~ 11:50am MWF Prerequisite: Spanish 103 or placement exam. The class is geared toward the development of particular language skills, understanding of linguistic systems, both in English and Spanish, and establishing linguistic connections outside the classroom. Cultural topics are embedded in every activity. We will discuss how linguistic characteristics influence our relationship with people. Students will be required to participate in a service-learning project. Spanish 200: Adv. Grammar & Composition See Schedule Below 01: 9:00am ~ 9:50am MWF 02: 12:00pm ~ 12:50pm MWF Prerequisite: Spanish 104 or placement exam. What is the secret behind accent marks in Spanish? What are the conventions for writing an essay in Spanish? What about those intricate grammar obscurities like the use of subjunctive? All will be revealed in this class, an intense writing and advanced grammar course geared toward the improvement of your writing skills by learning and practicing composition techniques, and by increasing your vocabulary. The class follows a topic related to the Hispanic culture. Past topics include: The Drug Circle: Colombia and the USA, and Two Figures of the Hispanic World: Malinche and Ernesto Che Guevara. Class includes weekly compositions, syntax tests, and reading of Spanish texts. Spanish : Advanced Spanish Conversation 11:00am ~ 11:50am MWF Fabiola Marolda Prerequisite: Spanish 104 or placement exam. Spanish 210 provides students with advanced oral and written practice in a conversational setting. Advanced Spanish vocabulary acquisition and correct pronunciation are stressed in this course. Spanish 210 is a sixth-semester course that assumes prior knowledge of the language equal to five semesters of college instruction or its equivalency as determined by the Saint Xavier Spanish Placement Exam. Therefore, class is conducted entirely in Spanish and students are expected to participate actively on a daily basis. Spanish : Spanish in the Workplace 9:30am ~ 10:50am T TH Pre-requisites: Spanish 104 or Placement Exam An advanced course that provides intensive oral and written practice for those students interested in working on their Spanish language skills in preparation for entering diverse professional environments. 4
6 Spanish : Interpretation of Texts (In Spanish) 2:00pm ~ 3:20pm T TH Prerequisite: 200 level language class or placement. Designed to acquaint students with basic literary terminology as well as with a variety of critical responses to a literary text trough the close reading of works in prose, poetry and drama. An overview of the literary movements of both Spain and Latin America will be presented. Oral and written responses to the material will be required, including exams, papers and oral presentations. Authors may include: Miguel de Cervantes, Federico García Lorca, Gabriel García Márquez, and Pablo Neruda. LITERATURE & CIVILIZATION COURSES Spanish : Sp. Top: Our America 2:00pm ~ 2:50pm MWF This course will offer a new approach to the study of American Literature by situating it in the context of the Western Hemisphere. America will be understood not as a synonym of the United States but as a network of cultural connections that transcends the boundaries of the nation, connecting the United States to the rest of the countries in North America, Central America, and South America. We will study the literatures of these regions in a comparative perspective from the time of colonization to the present. In doing so, we will reexamine the notions of race, nation, culture, and history as we compare different cultural models of understanding those concepts and emphasize, at the same time, the many instances of inter-cultural influence across national borders. Thus, we will read authors whose works focus on the contact among Indigenous, African, European, Mexican, Caribbean, South American, Canadian, and American people throughout the history of the "New World."
