1 Thu r sd ay 20 Marc h Edi tio n 4 The Beacon Student and Parent Newsletter Message from the Principal Important Dates Every Thursday Student Banking Tuesday March 25 &Wednesday March 26 Parent Teacher Interviews Friday 4 April Last Day of Term 1 Tuesday 22 April First Day Term 2 Earlier this week a number of parents observed one of our students being towed behind a car on their skateboard. Apart from being astonished at this report I was also shocked that a parent is willing to risk the life of their child in such a careless and dangerous manner. While this is an extreme incident I would point out to parents that we are mandated to report incidents where a child is placed at risk. We have observed over the last year a number of incidents where we believe parents should have made better judgment calls and we have been forced to report these incidents to the police or Department of Human Services. My staff and I do not like being placed in a position where we have to make a report but we will follow through on any incident where a child s safety and wellbeing is placed at risk. On Monday 31 st March we will be holding a parent forum at 7.00pm in our Library. The purpose of this forum is to present parents with a snapshot of how our school is performing, discuss our new reporting format, answer questions on school issues and discuss any parent suggestions for school improvement. In the last fortnight our year seven students received their laptops and to support this initiative we had a visit from the police to talk to our students about cyber safety. Within the next few weeks our grade three and four students will be receiving their IPad. As part of cyber safety, parents should be monitoring their child s internet and computer usage to ensure they are only accessing safe sites. Finally, congratulation goes to Priya Dahiya for her success at the Regional Swimming Carnival. Priya won her two events and has made us all very proud of her efforts. Well done Priya. 2 On Thursday 6 March Tarneit College celebrated World Book Day with great success! It was fantastic to see so many of our students and teachers getting into the spirit of the day by dressing up as their favourite story book characters. Everyone from The Cat in the Hat to Alice in Wonderland were spotted in the in the halls of Tarneit College! The whole school also enjoyed our Drop Everything and Read event, where everybody had the opportunity to stop what they were doing and enjoy a good book. The day s events were finished off with a spectacular World Book Day Assembly, led by our fantastic School Captains. The whole school enjoyed some very special performances, which helped us celebrate our love of books and reading. We would like to thank everyone who helped us to celebrate the day, and for helping us to raise $357, which will be divided between Books Aid International and our school fund. 3 Parents The Gardening Club is now up and running thanks to a generous donation of soil from All Green Nursery and Garden Supplies. This local company provided 2 cubic metres of top soil in response for donations. Thank you very much! Now we can start growing some herbs and vegetables on the school grounds. A thank you also to Bunnings in Hoppers Crossing who donated the portable iron garden bed. Primary Science Teacher Christina Lam CANTEEN NEWS Just a quick reminder that when placing an order at the window, 10c is also required for a bag unless of course, you supply your own that is large enough to hold the food ordered. If you need to place an order at the window, we will happily assist you before school hours or during recess. We will not do this during valuable school time and will send children back to their classrooms reminding them to come back and see us during recess. Icy twists and paddle pop vanilla ice creams (when available) are on special for $1.00 until the end of term 1. At the beginning of term 2 they will be at their usual price of $1.20 and $1.50 respectively. Sonja and Kaye Wolff Association TARNEIT COLLEGE ANNUAL EASTER RAFFLE Our first fundraiser of 2014 We are asking for donations of Easter eggs and treats to make up Easter hampers as prizes AND Each family to sell 20 raffle tickets. (Tickets to follow later this week.) The more donations we receive, the more prizes there will be! All egg donations will need to be handed in at school at Reception Friday 15 March Many thanks for your support Tarneit College P-9 Parent Association School Photos will be conducted at the College on Thursday 24 April (Term 2). 5 MELBOURNE TIGERS VISIT On 5 March 2014 Warrick Giddey, former Melbourne Tigers NBL Championship Player 450 games, assistant coach and now development manager came out to Tarneit P-9 College to host basketball clinics for all students in grades 3-6. Students learnt various skills and had lots of fun. A big thank you to Warrick and the Melbourne Tigers Alana Student Wellbeing Officer On Wednesday the 5 th of March Wazza came from the Melbourne Tigers to teach us basketball. It was great fun for the school. We learnt how to dribble, do tricks and shoot. At the end we all received a poster, free tickets to a Melbourne Tigers games and other stuff. We all give a massive thank you to Wazza for coming to our school. Akul Malkotia- 6BD Jeu de Rôle "Où est la Tour Eiffel? Jovan Adigordha from 6LM. Leading Constable and Youth Resources Officer s Dawn Youla and Tracey Dughig came and spoke to students in grades 3-7 s about cyber bullying. We were shown a video about cyber bullying and how to stop it. They talked about keeping our passwords to ourselves and talked about taking inappropriate pictures and sharing them around. Lastly they spoke about Brodie s Law and how one or two hurtful words can affect someone in a big way Jade Reynolds and Ruby Neil 7C If any French speaking parents from our school community would like to come and talk to the students in French or about French influence in your culture, please contact Roberta Varrenti (LOTE - French) at the school.
