3 1 THE COMMUNICATION PROJECT InfoPoint WiFi came into being from the intuition of MaxInfo Sardegna and At a Glance. Together, they approach communication from an all-round perspective, in line with top marketing standards. 2 INFOPOINT WIFI InfoPoint WiFi is a smart platform for delivering local and hyper-local information. The project s aim is to communicate in a fast and simple manner official, public or private information in a restricted geographical area to a wide public equipped with smartphones, tablets or PCs/laptops, or via dedicated touch-screen monitors or totems/kiosks. InfoPoint WiFi creates a wifi network and delivers to users all the info and contents present on the platform on a nocharge, no-authentication basis. The InfoPoint WiFi platform is the answer to companies and organisations wishing to experiment with new marketing strategies and promote their business or services in the territory. 4 tablets and laptops, while also spanning other ways of making contact with customers and service users. As our daily habits are being rapidly transformed by the intensive use of new devices and displays, content publishers need to keep abreast of developments by changing their metrics for measuring online content use and reach. That is why businesses are increasingly turning to digital channels for their advertising and are experimenting with new approaches and metrics to reach selected target audiences. Against this background, hyper-local communication comes to the fore. 2.2 ONE LOGO, ONE SERVICE The presence of the InfoPoint WiFi service is signalled by the logo created by At a Glance. A neat, attractive design in a bright colour, stimulating curiosity. According to location, the logo can be posted on a vertical sign, stickers or roll-up banners. 2.3 THE IMPACT OF HIPERLOCAL COMMUNICATION Hyper-local communication, i.e. those local contents and information covering a limited, well defined geographical area, caters for the information needs of 90% of smartphone online info searches. Shifting attention from global to local, it opens up new scenarios when selecting a service or making a purchase. 8 3 STRUCTURE AND CONTENTS After accessing the InfoPoint WiFi services, you will see an interface structured like a website, with selectable buttons. InfoPoint WiFi s interaction design is user-friendly, intuitive for the least savvy users and optimised for smartphones and tablets. InfoPoint WiFi has a three-level content structure. In the home page, a large button at the top is dedicated to the main theme of the active service. The buttons below it are linked to specific themes. Contents are short and direct, based on usability rules for online reading using responsive design. Contents can be expanded by adding in each section audio and video files and images. 10 4 VERSION OF INFOPOINT WIFI Behind the graphic interface visible to all, lies the tool enabling the info produced by our writing team to be disseminated in the area covered by the InfoPoint WiFi. The InfoPoint WiFi network comprises InfoBoxes see figure entirely developed by MIS. The InfoBoxes come either in an indoor or outdoor version. Installing the indoor InfoBox is very easy. Just plug it into an electrical socket and wait three minutes. The range of the WiFi signal is about 200 m. Through the HDMI port it can be connected to a touch screen monitor or a personalised kiosk. Indoor infobox Indoor infobox The InfoBox for outdoor use meets strict industrial and technology standards. It can be powered from the grid or by PV cells. Its plastic housing/casing protects the internal components from the weather and damaging agents. It has been designed for minimal visual impact and to be unobtrusive also in particular locations, such as on the outside of heritage buildings or next to tourist info signs. 11 5 USE VIA MOBILE DEVICES Accessing InfoPoint WiFi is very simple and intuitive. Users within the range of the InfoBox (signalled by signs or other communication materials) only need to ensure their WiFi connection is turned on, select the InfoPoint WiFi network and access their service from their smartphone, tablet or laptop through the browser they normally use to surf the web. 14 8 TECNICAL SPEC InfoPoint WiFi is a technology platform based on two main components. The content management system based on Drupal 7 and the client installed on the device. 8.1 Content management system The CMS, based on a modified version of Drupal 7, enables journalists and content writers to see all the active InfoPoints, select them individually or together, choose the position of contents, and enter the contents which may be texts images and videos. Content writers have access credentials allowing them to operate in compliance with the policies established by the chief editor or publishing director Analytics The CMS includes a Piwik-based software component for access analysis. The Piwik database is fed each time the InfoPoints link up to the CMS to download new contents. The analytics data are based on the logs of the Apache software present in the InfoBox. 8.2 InfoBox device The InfoBox is based on two technologies: RaspBerry and Alix board. The software platform installed on the devices is based on Linux and Apache. The device can access the internet via UMTS/GSM or via local network and xdsl connection.
