Now you will learn about the cultural regions of the world. You will see that both political and cultural areas overlap the boundaries of countries and even continents. Here is your goal for this lesson: Describe Anglo-American, Latin American, and African cultural regions bicameral Having two law-making groups. The Anglo-American region of the Americas is so named because the main language is English. It includes Canada, the United States, and the island of Greenland. Both Canada and the United States were once colonies of Britain, and both nations have bicameral systems of government. The friendly spirit that exists between Canada and the United States allows travel and trade to flow freely across the border. Education and a democratic way of life have helped the United States gain the technical skills necessary to develop its many God-given resources. The living standard of the United States is among the highest in the world. Canadians also enjoy a high standard of living. 4 Page 2 of 3 low medium average high LATIN AMERICA All of the territory in the Western Hemisphere south of the United States, which includes Mexico, Central and South America, and the West Indies, is known as Latin America. The main languages of the region are Spanish and Portuguese. These languages developed from Latin, thus giving the region its name. The cultures of Latin America differ greatly. Some people live in the same way that their ancestors did hundreds of years ago. Others are very highly educated, living in modern cities. The culture of Latin American nations is much older than that of the United States. The Inca, Aztec, and Maya Indians established advanced civilizations long before the Anglo-Americans. Today 13 republics are in South America. Ten republics are in the central and northern divisions of Latin America. Much of South America is undeveloped because the climate is too harsh. But, the large, poor population is pushing into these harsher climates to find land and food. Many people fear, for example, that the beautiful rainforest of Central America and the Amazon region will be destroyed by people clearing them for farms and ranches. The southern part of South America lies in the middle latitudes. This area has the most comfortable climate for living and has two great modern cities. These cities, on the eastern coast, are Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Latin America exports many products including tin, bauxite, coffee, sugar, and bananas. Many cultures can be found in Africa because many different types of people live there. These people have successfully adjusted to their local climates. The desert people in the north have the Arabic customs and religion. The Black tribes throughout the central and southern area have developed local tribal customs. All areas of Africa have been influenced by the European countries that have controlled them at different times in history.

Although Africa's development has been slow, as better technical knowledge is employed, Africa may become a world leader in the mining of natural resources. Many African countries won their independence from European rule in the 1960s. As these new countries were formed, the citizens had to face the challenges and problems that accompany the formation of new political systems. Many African people give their allegiance to their tribe, not to their nation. This divides the people in these countries and creates many problems for the government. Very, very few African countries have had free, democratic governments in the years since they became independent. The different tribal groups often try to kill each other, leading to many wars in Africa. Problem Number: 8 Africa has no resources. Africa has one-fifth of the world's land and 15 percent of the world's population. North of Africa is the Mediterranean Sea, which the Bible calls the Uttermost Sea. This sea is where the first civilized men sailed. East of Africa is the man-made Suez Canal and the Red Sea. The insects were cast into the Red Sea when the locust plague of Egypt ended. Also east of Africa is the Indian Ocean, while on the west, is the Atlantic Ocean. These two oceans intermingle at the southern tip of Africa. In the northern half of Africa is the great Sahara Desert. Africa also holds smaller deserts. The Kalahari Desert is located in the south and the Kenya-Somali Desert is in the east.

7 Page 2 of 4 Except for a few mountain ranges, most of Africa is a plateau. The Atlas Mountains are in the northwest, while the Drakensberg Mountains are in the south. The highest peak in Africa is Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is 19,340 feet (5,895 m) high, and always has snow on its peak. It is located on the eastern coast. Africa has a few lowlands. The lowlands are mostly along the rivers and the coast. The swiftly flowing water from the highlands prevents the rivers from having good harbors, although Capetown and Cairo are exceptions. The rivers leave little sediment, except when they flood.

8 Page 3 of 4 Africa has many great rivers; most famous of all is the Nile. Located in east Africa, it flows out of Lake Victoria in Uganda north to Egypt. All the rivers of Africa flood at times, and all have waterfalls. The Nile River floods from June to October. After that time it returns to normal. The sevenyear famine in Biblical times was thought to be due to the poor use of the flood waters. The "gift of the Nile" is Egypt's rich soil. The soil is so valuable that the ancient Egyptians actually worshipped the Nile River. The Nile River is important in the Old Testament. Because of the Nile's rich soil, so much corn was grown that Joseph could feed his starving brothers. Also, the baby Moses was hidden in the Nile among the papyrus reeds. Africa has other great rivers as well. The Congo in central Africa has a mouth six miles wide where it flows into the Atlantic Ocean. On this river are located the great Wagenia Falls. The Zambezi River of the southeast contains the Victoria Falls. The Niger River is located in the northwest. In the deserts of Africa you will find hot, dry climates. The Sahara Desert is so large, the ocean winds have little effect. Along the edges of the desert are the dry lands. Most of Africa has a tropical climate with much rain and heat. This climate exists because the equator runs through the middle of the continent. The southern Highveld, an open grazing area, has a temperate climate.
