8 Seminar, "COB Teaching Excellence Online Teaching", COB Teaching Excellence Center. (September 1, Present). Comments on Student Evaluations. (September 1, August 31, 2012). My GBU 440 Records Management student evaluation numbers were high with an average score of 4.73 (64% of students responding) in Fall 2011 when the course was face to face and 4.54 (84% of students responding) in Spring 2012 when the course was online. Considering the complexity of the course online, I was pleased with that number. I would have liked the evaluations of the BCM 247 Honors course to be a little higher than the average of 3.98 as my online course in the same subject averaged In trying to keep the diversity of activities both high and interesting, I may have missed connecting some of them effectively to the course material. I think I need to work on my expectations for the course and my students' expectations. In the online 247 class for Spring 2012, I use the chats to add cohesion to the course. In that semester the chat feature in Blackboard first worked poorly and then broke completely and OIT was unable to repair it. I had to switch to a new platform called Elluminate which provided its own challenges. Hopefully, chats will be improved with D2L. In Summer 2012, I was again teaching the BCM 520 for graduate students. Working with D2L for the first time was a challenge for both faculty and students. I think some of the comments about the amount of time they had to do assignments was mistaken. In a shortened summer format, several days notice should have been sufficient time. I wanted to use new and different assignments than had been taught in the course before and it took some time to prepare them. I plan to meet with accounting faculty to be sure that what is happening in the course is what they are interested in having taught. Overall, my Fall semester teaching evaluations were the highest. However, in that semester I taught familiar versions of courses with the exception of textbook changes in GBU 440 and the face-to-face format helped me work with those. In the spring and summer, I was working with newer courses and technology challenges. I already have some ideas for improving the tone and activities in the honors section of BCM 247. Workshop, "D2L Summer Camp", Office of Instructional Technology. (August 14, August 17, 2012). Workshop, "Desire 2 Learn Classes", Office of Instructional Technology. (February April 2012). Conference Attendance, "National Business Education Association convention", NBEA. (April 3, April 7, 2012). Comments on Student Evaluations. (September 1, August 31, 2011). In both the GBU 440 and the BCM 247 courses, my evaluations for the online courses have improved slightly over the face-to-face courses. At one time the evaluations for the online courses were lower than the face-to-face courses. Several students commented on the required and optional chats I have implemented in the courses. They feel this is a good opportunity for connection in the course and to have their questions answered. BCM 520 Managerial Communication was an online course for Summer 2011 and it was my first time to teach this relatively new course which is still in a development phase. I think I can make some changes to improve the student experience in this course. I patterned the course off the first online section of the course offered by Dr. Austin in the Spring 2011, so I don t think I quite captured my voice in the course. Only 56% of the students did the evaluation which means that I didn t get feedback from a number of the students the results were based on 9 students responses. A number of the students had not had an online course before and seemed more comfortable with a
9 face-to-face format. I was also trying to determine the level of writing and the amount of assignments. I probably had more assignments than I could keep up with effectively. While most of the comments were positive, I have some ideas for improvement on this course and would expect better evaluations the next time around. Student Evaluations, "Comments on Evaluations". (September 1, August 30, 2009). In reviewing my student evaluations, I was pleased to see that in most of my classes two of my highest evaluation scores were in "My instructor displays enthusiasm when teaching" and "I believe my instructor wants everyone to succeed in this course." My evaluations across courses were fairly consistent. Revised Online Course, "Virtual Team Communication", Rusche College of Business. (July 10, 2009). While this course was first offered in Summer 2007, it was revised and updated in an online format for Summer 1, Teaching Excellence Center - Teaching circles. (August May 2009). Conducted two teaching circles and participated in VOICES online teaching circle during year. Workshop, "Working with Troubled Students", SFA. (February 12, 2009). Conducted by Matthew Sutherlin (School of Art) and Susan Jennings (GBU). Conference Attendance, "Creativity Summit: Solutions for Business, Government and Education," Texas Institute for Creativity and Innovation, Nacogdoches, TX. (February 4, February 5, 2009). Teaching Innovations Summer 2012, BCM This was the first semester to use D2L. Although I had taught the course the previous summer, I made revisions from the version that had been taught and added new assignments. In addition, we offered two sections of the course. One was primarily for accounting majors and the other for business, communication, interdisciplinary majors, etc. Different assignments were used to better focus student interest. As the course was online, D2L was used extensively including the chat feature. Spring 2012, BCM As part of our assessment, we revised the report assignment to have an individual focus instead of a team focus.
10 Spring 2012, BCM This was our first attempt at teaching an honors course for BCM 247. I decided to ramp up the technology of the course more than in a usual section of the course. The students worked with Prezi presentation software in addition to PowerPoint. Other software programs were implemented on projects throughout the semester. Fall 2011, GBU We switched to the 2010 version of Microsoft Access which required a new text which received favorable reviews from the students. Summer 2011, BCM Pedagogical Innovation: This summer I worked with fellow faculty (Susan Jennings, Betty Johnson and Judi Biss) on a trial of a new website called YouSeeU. Each student prepared two video presentations, uploaded them to the website, created appropriate Powerpoint presentations and synced those to the video. The faculty then inserted comments so the students could see them when they played back their presentations. After a successful trial in four online sections, the faculty recommended use of the website for Fall 2011 in online business communication courses. The report theme was also technology based and focused on exploring technology etiquette issues in terms of safety, security, privacy, and courtesy in the workplace. Summer 2011, BCM This was a new course preparation for me. I taught this course at the graduate level. For newer technology, I added a blogging component which required students to create a blog, post threeparagraph entries twice a week, follow other classmates blogs, and edit their own blogs. Former students had suggested more communication based on technology and blogging was one of the items mentioned. Spring 2011, BCM The report theme for this course was Body Art in the Workplace and focused on business issues and generational differences in the interpretation of body art (piercings and tattoos) in the workplace. Spring 2011, GBU Redesigned several of the online course modules to update the course. Fall 2010, BCM The report theme for this semester focused on the value of breakfast and how a restaurant should expand to include or not include a breakfast option. Summer , BCM Worked with Betty Johnson to develop a theme approach to assignments so the oral presentation, team report, good news, bad news, and persuasive letters all were involved with the same theme-- obesity in the workplace. Summer , BCM Continued to update the required software for this course to reflect updated information. Spring 2010, GBU This course was revised for the online format for the first time in several semesters. Previous projects were scanned to PDF files so students could view sample projects. Summer , BCM Computer Applications: added component of the virtual world Second Life to the course, added additional articles to review, added new software such as DimDim, GotoMeeting, and LiveMeeting for students to review.
