2 Dear Colleagues On behalf of The Norwegian Association of Midwives, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Oslo and the 19th Congress of the Nordic Federation of Midwives. The Congress will be held at the Radisson Blu Scandinavian Hotel, in the heart of the Oslo city center June The theme for the 19th Nordic Midwifery Congress is Nordic and Global Challenges. The Congress will reflect the challenges midwives face within our own Nordic countries and those which midwifery worldwide are confronted with. Nordic midwives take an interest in and are active professionals both at home and abroad. The Nordic Federation of Midwives was established in 1950, and the first congress of the Federation was held in Lund in the same year. 300 midwives attended. 63 years later, we expect to host up to 800 midwives in Oslo from the Nordic Region; Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Island, the Faroe Islands, Sweden and Norway. During three days, interesting keynote lectures, symposiums and workshops will enlighten new perspectives on midwifery, focusing on research and new developments within the field of practice. The Congress creates huge opportunities for midwives to develop networks and friendships with new colleagues. 4 Modes of presentation We invite abstracts to the presentation forms listed here

5 Oral presentation An oral presentation is theoretical and scientific and follows the traditional format whereby each presenter is allocated a maximum of fifteen minutes followed by five minutes for discussion. Poster Presentation Poster presentations are visual displays of theoretical, scientific or practical material. Presenters will be required to be present at their poster during the organized poster-walks which will be organized several times during the congress. Please be prepared to provide hand-outs of your poster. Symposium A symposium is an oral presentation of between three and five papers with a shared focus followed by discussions with the audience. The duration of a symposium is normally 60 or 90 minutes. Authors wishing to submit papers as a symposium must nominate a symposium leader to submit a single abstract form. The abstract must: include an outline of the symposium proposed itemize the individual papers and their authors explicitly demonstrate how the papers interrelate Presentation of practice environment Orally, as a film or as a slide show, you (and a colleague) have the opportunity to present aspects of your antenatal clinic, delivery ward, postnatal ward or other places of practice. Your presentation can show your daily life at work and discuss e.g. highlights, challenges or new initiatives. The duration of the presentation is 20 minutes.

6 J F M A M J J A S O N D 24.August 2012 Deadline for indication of interest to be a reviewer 15.October 2012: Deadline for submission of abstracts 21.December 2012: Presentation of the preliminary program Story-telling At a predetermined place within the Congress venue there will be an opportunity to give short, informal oral presentations of max. 10 minutes. Here you will have the possibility to tell other midwives about the highlights, challenges or new initiatives of your daily life. You may expect a small audience and you will be supported by a Congress hostess. You are welcome to exhibit your national costume, work uniform and to use props. Workshop Workshops are interactive sessions of 60 or 90 minutes duration in which the leader facilitates development of participants knowledge and understanding within a specific field. The workshop can have a theoretical, a practical or an educational focus. A workshop is presented by an expert within the field and may be pitched at novice, intermediate or advanced level. Anyone wishing to lead a workshop must submit an abstract describing: the focus of the workshop expected level of interaction with participants

7 J F M A M J J A S O N D 15.February 2013: Deadline for early bird registration TIMELINE of the Congress June 2013: CONGRESS Debate A debate presents opposing views on the same issue of midwifery practice. The duration of a debate is 60 minutes which includes 20 minutes for the presentation of each viewpoint and 20 minutes of discussion. The discussion will be led by the moderator appointed by the scientific committee. Midwives wishing to debate must nominate a leader to submit a single abstract form. The abstract must include: a description of the issue to be debated the opposing views to be presented and their presenters Usually only two opposing views are presented in a debate, for example late versus early clamping of the umbilical cord.

9 Welcome to Oslo Oslo is the capital of Norway, and with only inhabitants, one of Europe s smallest. Most attractions are found within walking distance from the Venue of the Congress. Situated deep in the Oslo fjord and surrounded by gentle hills, Oslo s location creates a unique combination of city life and easy access to outdoor activities. Besides the scientific program there is an exciting social program: The Mayor of Oslo invites us on Thursday afternoon to a reception and guided tour in the beautiful City Hall of Oslo where the Nobel Peace Prize is handed out each year. You are also invited to the formal congress dinner in the Saga Hall at the Holmenkollen Park Hotel on Friday evening. A visit to the banqueting room is just like a step back in time to the Saga-period. If you are an owner of a national costume, this is the perfect opportunity to wear it. About the Congress The Congress will be held June 2013 Congress Venue: Radisson Blue Scandinavian Hotel is located in Oslo in the vicinity of the town hall and the city centre. 10 Call for abstracts The Congress will reflect the challenges midwives face within our own Nordic countries and those which midwifery worldwide are confronted with. The 19th Nordic Midwifery Congress aims are to: present new evidence based knowledge on Nordic and global issues related to midwifery inspire midwives to face local, national and global challenges create opportunities for midwives to develop networks and friendships with new colleagues introduce new developments within the field of practice Midwives, student-midwives and others with practice and research relevant to midwifery are invited to attend the congress and submit abstracts. Abstracts on any aspect of midwifery practice and science are welcome, in particularly abstracts in agreement with the aims for the congress. Abstract submission opens June 2012 and ends 15.October English is the preferred language for the abstract as well as the presentation at the conference. However, it is possible to submit the abstract in a Scandinavian language and indicate if presentation in this language is the only possible option for you. All presentations require an abstract and abstract requirements vary depending on which presentation form you choose. The abstracts can only be submitted electronically using the ScholarOne system. This should not pose any problems if you read and follow the instructions carefully and ScholarOne can assist with technical support if you need it. If you register early, you may take advantage of the early registration discount.

11 Gunnhild Blåka Gunnhild Blåka was the first Norwegian midwife who in 1996 defended her PhD. She has been a lecturer at the Norwegian midwifery schools, as well as given lectures in other Nordic countries. Her research topics have been to understand the historical profession and practice of midwifery using narrative theory. At present she is an associate professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine, Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen. Ellen Blix Ellen Blix is born 1956 in Hammerfest. She graduated as a nurse in 1980, midwife in 1986, Master in Public Health in 2000 and Doctor in Public Health in Currently she is working as a research manager in the Clinical research department, University Hospital of North Norway in Tromsø. Her research interests are home births and different aspects of normal childbirth. Tarek Meguid One of the keynote-speakers at the conference will be Dr.Tarek Meguid. He is a gynecologist and obstetrician with many years of experience from working in Malawi and Namibia. He also has a master in studies of International Human Rights Law from Oxford University in He will talk about international challenges regarding maternal health.
