Barton Education has provided MEP design services for numerous student housing facilities. We understand the design challenges of the MEP systems for student housing facilities and specifically consider the following: - Centralized vs Decentralized HVAC Systems - Building Automation and Temperature Control Systems - Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems - Multi-floor Systems - Sustainability
Student Housing facilities are an integral part of an institutions overall strategic master plan. They play a critical role in the ability to attract, assimilate, retain, support and develop students throughout their academic careers. While they must be flexible to meet the changing needs and desires of students, they also offer unique opportunities to physically embody a school s mission. Barton Education understands the social, academic and financial impact of these facilities. We work with our clients to develop facilities that fit within the contextual fabric of the institution while meeting programmatic, operational and performance goals. Barton Education provides a team that is dedicated and focused to the specific drivers that shape today s Student Housing facilities. They must serve multiple functions while meeting the needs of a varied constituency. We understand how different types of housing options reinforce the development of students as well as the multiple funding/ ownership options. We also understand the unique needs of these facilities which create opportunities for energy efficient design, alternative energy systems and sustainable design practices especially when viewed with the larger campus in mind. From concept to final occupancy, our dedicated team of engineers works diligently to understand the needs and role of each project stakeholder and strives to deliver a customized approach that strikes the right balance. Whether you are repurposing and renovating existing housing stock or developing a new multi-building complex, a thorough understanding of the many variables that make these facilities successful from multiple perspectives is critical. Understanding the changing needs and desires of prospective and existing students, administrators, educators and facilities staff as well as funding streams all play a role in the decision making process. You can be confident that Barton Education has the experience to focus on the right details at the right time to provide the right solution to meet your needs.
Mount St. Mary s University Emmittsburg, MD The Terrace 100,000 sq. ft. $8 million August 2009 Photos courtesy of MM Architects Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for 100,000 square feet of renovations of Mount St. Mary s Terrace Buildings. The Terrace encompasses four of the university s oldest buildings dating back to the late 1820s. The renovations allowed the buildings to be used as a 380-bed dormitory, a student chapel, game room, student lounges, study rooms and fitness center. The plumbing design included complete replacement of the sanitary waste and vent system, domestic water system, domestic water heating plant with high efficiency condensing water heaters, new low flow fixtures throughout and the addition of a natural gas service and fire protection system. HVAC system design included a new 2-pipe fan coil system with energy recovery units, (2) air cooled chillers, extension campus central steam from the central utility plant, steam to hot water heat exchangers, variable speed chilled water/hot water pumping system and provisions for serving additional buildings with heating hot water as well as a complete building management system interfaced with the campus management system. Electrical systems design included a new main distribution switchboard served by the campus primary power system, power distribution throughout the building, emergency generator, fire alarm system with mass notification capabilities, access control systems, security cameras, full structured cabling system including wireless access points, cable TV, lighting and lighting control systems.
Photos courtesy of MM Architects Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Lancaster, PA Student Housing 222,000 sq. ft. $5.5 million April 2013 Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for multi-phased renovation projects to the 222,000 square-foot former home of the Lancaster Osteopathic Hospital for Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. The renovations converted the hospital into student housing for 240 students as well as classrooms including a physics lab, graphics labs and business administration program suite for the technology students.
Gettysburg College Gettsyburg, PA Fraternities 5,000-18,000 sq. ft. $3.6 million April 2006 & October 2009 Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services to renovate several existing fraternities on the Gettysburg College Campus. The MEP systems included a new hydronic system including boiler and radiant baseboard through the wall air conditioning systems; a new plumbing system to service new restrooms and laundry room; evaluation and upgrade of electrical service, distribution, lighting and telecommunication distribution throughout the 18,000 square-foot, Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity and 3-story, 5,000 square-foot, Albaugh House. The 10,000 square-foot, Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity and 13,000 square-foot, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity MEP renovations included a new hydronic system including boiler and 4-pipe fan coil units with provisions for extension of campus chilled water; a new plumbing system to service new restrooms and laundry room; evaluation and upgrade of electrical service, distribution, lighting and telecommunication distribution throughout the houses.
Messiah College Mechanicsburg, PA Fry Apartments 54,000 sq. ft. $4.7 million Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for this 54,000 square-foot renovation to Fry Apartments, an apartment-style residence complex at Messiah College. Renovations included re-configuration of the student apartments, MEP systems replacement and upgrades, wireless data access points and upgrades to fire alarm and security systems for this 78-bed apartment building. Barton also incorporated a water source heat pump system to serve the building s HVAC needs. Elizabethtown College Elizabethtown, PA Ober Hall 51,000 sq. ft. $1.5 million Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for the complete demolition and renovation of 7 group bathrooms in Ober Hall, the largest residence hall at Elizabethtown College. The bathrooms were demolished completely and built up with new partitions, showers, toilets and sinks in a new layout to provide proper circulation. New plumbing piping, electric, heat and exhaust was provided for the restrooms. The existing floor to floor height in the building is 9-4 which made the distribution of utilities difficult as the building is 4 stories in one wing and 3 stories in the other wing. Coordination was tight both in design and in construction with the contractors. The construction of the project began in May with abatement when the students left school and completed in August before the students returned. Gettysburg College Gettysburg, PA Student Housing 40,000 sq. ft. $3 million Barton Education provided mechanical, electrical and plumbing design services for several of the college s dormitories including Hanson, Patrick, Mussleman, Huber and Quarry Halls. The projects ranged from new dormitories to renovations and included new lighting, network cabling, occupancy sensors in all of the rest rooms, ventilation systems with energy recovery, fire protection systems and installation of Americans with Disabilities-approved showers.
Mechanical Electrical Plumbing Fire Protection Master Planning Commissioning Integrated Energy Solutions Barton Education a division of Barton Associates, Inc. provides quality engineering solutions to education clients throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Higher education projects are often highly sensitive and complex in nature and require a customized engineering approach. Barton Education has an extensive portfolio of state-of-the art facilities including performing art centers, research/laboratories, campus life, athletics, student housing, academic and food services. We understand that without the proper infrastructure in place, providing an environment conducive to achieving the institutions mission is not possible. Barton Education considers ways to minimize energy consumption, conserve resources and enhance indoor environmental quality for every project we complete. Energy Conservation is a priority in every design and our staff of professionals are trained, licensed and/or certified to design MEP systems and evaluate the performance of these systems. We utilize building information modeling for greater team collaboration. We apply focus, dedication, practicality, precision and longevity to each project we deliver and live by these principles to help us achieve our mission We Make Buildings Work.
