1 Volunteer Management - The Essentials: Course Outline May to June 2014
2 What does the course cover? This course will provide you with all the essentials to create or further develop your volunteer programme. This includes the essential building blocks; getting volunteers involved, getting them started, delivering a great experience, building on success and volunteer policies and procedures. The objectives for the course you will enable you: Explain what volunteering is, why people do it and what they can do. Plan a recruitment process to get volunteers involved. Design an induction and support process to get volunteers started. Identify what needs to happen to deliver a great volunteer experience. Describe how you can build and communicate you and your volunteers successes. Design policies and procedures to support volunteering within your organisation. How is it delivered? The course will be delivered face to face. Dates and Times 1 st May nd May th May Location Volunteer Scotland Jubilee House Forthside Way Stirling FK8 1QZ For more information on what each session will cover and dates for each session you can check out our Agenda s at the bottom of this document. Who is it aimed at? Anyone involved in supporting volunteers. You might be brand new to working with volunteers or you may just want a refresher, be a volunteer or a paid member of staff. What will I achieve when I complete the course? Yes. We are currently working to ensure the course is endorsed by the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). ILM is the UK s largest management body, combining industry-leading qualifications and specialist member services. This means you will receive either a Developing Leadership in Volunteer Programmes Development or Endorsed Award. What s the difference? Volunteer Management - The Essentials Development Award: you will complete the full course but will not have to submit any assessments. You can make this decision at any point during the course. You will receive an ILM Development Award once you complete the course. Volunteer Management - The Essentials Endorsed Award: in addition to completing the course you will be asked to create a volunteer policy which will be assessed by your tutor. Support will be available to you from the tutor whilst completing your assessment. You will receive an ILM Endorsed Award once you have completed the course and passed your assignment.
3 Those taking the course will be given six months free membership of ILM including access to their Learning Zone, resources and newsletters. Is there any additional work? All we ask is that you look over any documents your organisation has that relates to volunteering in advance of the course starting. If you do not have these, don t worry as it is not essential to have them. How much does it cost? 299. Why choose a Volunteer Scotland course? 4 Face to Face Delivery Day 1: Thursday 1st May Volunteer Scotland Offices, Jubilee House, Forthside Way, Stirling By the end of the day you will be able to: Explain what volunteering is, why people do it and what they can do. Plan a recruitment process to get volunteers involved. Work to do in advance: Look at your organisations volunteer policy and any other related documents (if you have them). Agenda: Registration opens (teas and coffees available) Welcome to the course What is volunteering? In our opening session we will explore what volunteering means, why people want to do it and what kind of activities they want to do Why involve volunteers? There are as many reasons as to why organisations and groups involve volunteers as there are volunteers themselves. This session will explore these reasons and why volunteers can add so much value to your organisation Lunch Getting started We want to attract the best volunteers so that they are able to make a difference and this session will enable you to design attractive and appropriate roles as well as looking at how to manage volunteer and staff relations 14:30 Break Getting Started Now you have the volunteers you need to be able to match them to the right role and support them to be effective and this session will help you do just that Review of the day Close.
5 Day 2: Thursday 22 nd May Volunteer Scotland Offices, Jubilee House, Forthside Way, Stirling By the end of the day you will be able to: Design an induction and support process to get volunteers started. Identify what needs to happen to deliver a great volunteer experience Registration opens (tea and coffee available) Welcome to day Getting started. First impressions count and in this session we will explore how to create a positive induction for your volunteers Delivering a great volunteer experience. This session will explore how you can deliver a great volunteer experience by effectively supporting and communicating with your volunteers Lunch Managing challenging situations. This session will look at strategies and tools for managing challenging volunteers. You will gain a better understanding of how to manage the changing personal motivations of volunteers to help ensure they continue to have a positive experience. We will also cover techniques for asking a volunteer to leave Break Building on Success Recognising the contribution that your volunteers make is an important aspect of keeping them motivated. In this session you will identify recognition techniques that are right for you, and your volunteers Review of the day Close.
6 Day 3: Thursday 12 th June Volunteer Scotland Offices, Jubilee House, Forthside Way, Stirling By the end of the day you will be able to: Evaluate your volunteer programme. Design policies and procedures to support volunteering within your organisation. Agenda Registration opens (teas and coffees available) Welcome to day Building on success. This session will examine some of the tools you can use to evaluate your volunteer programme and then effectively communicate this across your organisation Lunch Designing policies and procedures. We will explore some of the principles behind creating effective policies and procedures as well as looking at what kind of policies and procedures organisations need to support volunteers Break Timelining and action planning In this penultimate session we will review the course content to help you develop an action plan to develop your practice Review of the course Close.
