1 NOW TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence Masters Degree in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence NB: Individual Modules on these courses can be taken for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) The above courses offered by the National Centre for the Study and Prevention of Violence and Abuse (NCSPVA) at the University of Worcester; are designed to situate domestic violence historically, and critically explore this complex social issue by looking at theoretical perspectives of causation, examining the impact of it and analysing interventions and good practice professional responses. The ultimate aim of the courses is to support students to establish a firm knowledge and evidence base for practice which is rooted in theory, legislation, policy and standards. The courses offer the opportunity for in depth and critical study; allows students to follow their personal and professional interests through independent study and teaches transferable skills including but not exhaustive of, critical thinking; presentation skills; academic writing; professional report writing; group work and research skills. COURSE PATHWAYS Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence This is a 1 year course consisting of 3 modules. Each module is taught over 2 X 3 day blocks. Students must attend both blocks (total of 6 days) and with tutor support, will be required to do set and independent reading, and work towards assignments outside of taught days.

2 Upon successful completion of the 3 modules (attendance and assessment), students will gain the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence and 60 credits that can be banked towards future Postgraduate Level study. The modules and dates for are as follows: MODULE CODE MODULE TITLE DATES MDVM4001 Theoretical Perspectives on Gender, Violence and Interpersonal Relationships MDVM4002 MDVM003 The Cost of Domestic Violence Recognition and Response October 9 th, 10 th & 11 th 2015 AND November 20 th, 21 st, & 22nd 2015 Feb 5/6/7 th 2016 AND March 19/20/21 st 2016 April 15/16/17 th 2016 AND May 21/22/23rd 2016 Please note that the course is run on weekends to allow for those who work to attend however; many students will be granted time off in lieu from their employer. Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence can apply to continue onto the Postgraduate Diploma by studying for one more year. The second year will consist of a further 3 modules. Each module is taught over 2 X 3 day blocks. Students must attend both blocks (total of 6 days) and with tutor support, will be required to do set and independent reading and work towards assignments outside of taught days. Upon successful completion of the modules (attendance and assessment), students will gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence and a further 60 credits that can be banked towards any future Postgraduate Level study. There are a number of optional modules from which students can choose. These can be seen below, though it should be noted that not all optional modules will run every year.

Masters Degree in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence Students who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence can apply to continue onto the final year of study to gain a Masters Degree. The final year requires students to complete a one year Dissertation (equivalent of 3 modules). The dissertation (MDVM4006) provides the opportunity for students to explore in a systematic and in-depth manner a topic of their choice but related to domestic violence. There are no taught sessions in this final year. The Dissertation is independent research but students will be supervised and supported by tutors throughout and there will be regular workshops. Upon successful completion of the Dissertation students will gain a Masters Degree in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence. Short Courses for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Many of the modules taught as part of our courses can be studied as stand-alone short courses that individuals can take as part of their Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Each short course (module) is taught over 2 X 3 day blocks. Students must attend both blocks (total of 6 days) and with tutor support, will be required to do set and independent reading and work towards assignments outside of taught days. Upon successful completion of any short course (module) (attendance and assessment), students will gain a University Level 7 certificate and 20 credits that they can bank towards future Postgraduate Level study. Students who complete any short course (module) for CPD can count the credits gained towards the Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/Masters Degree should they wish to continue with their studies.

4 Who teaches on the Courses? The courses sit within the National Centre for the Study and Prevention of Violence and Abuse (NCSPVA) at the University of Worcester. The Director of the NCSPVA is Ruth Jones OBE who has been recognised for her work in the domestic and sexual abuse sector with a number of awards including; the award for best UK Universities Applied Researcher for A Needs and Gaps Analysis of Sexual Violence Services (2010). Ruth was awarded the title of Worcestershire Woman of the Year in 2011 for her work on domestic and sexual violence and was named as an Inspirational woman of Europe in She received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to victims of domestic and sexual violence in the New Year Honours List in 2014 and was also recognised for her work on gender based violence by the Chief of the Pakistan Police Bureau in Ruth leads a team of specialist lecturers/researchers in local, national and international work. Details of course tutors are given on course descriptors when students enrol. Course Assessment Assessment across the modules may include: Essays Reports Case Studies Presentations Professional reflection Group work Who should apply? Though this is a Postgraduate course, those wishing to apply do not have to have achieved education at degree level. The courses are open to: Anyone with a general interest in domestic violence Those currently in practice in the field of domestic violence who would like to gain a specialist qualification Those with an interest in becoming a domestic violence professional who would like to gain a specialist qualification Multi-agency professionals Mangers and policy makers Applicants may be asked for interview and may be asked to demonstrate an ability to study at postgraduate level by submitting some written work prior to admission Successful completion of these courses gives professionals recognition and status.

5 Worried that you won t be able to work to Postgraduate Level? WHAT PAST STUDENTS HAVE SAID I was concerned about the academic level of the course as I hadn t studied at this level before. I hadn t even studied at all for many years. Tutors were so supportive though that they gave me confidence in my abilities and I have achieved at an academic level I never thought possible Enjoyable; marvelous. Modules on this course should be undertaken by all professionals I highly recommend this course to others. I travel a long way to attend but do so due to my commitment to the course because it is so good I learnt so much on the Postgraduate Certificate that I wanted to go on and learn more. I continued onto the MA and I am so glad I did. Tutors are excellent, organised and professional with inclusive teaching styles. I have worked with children who have been affected by domestic abuse for 25 years but I learnt so much in just one weekend on MDVM4011(Children, Young People and Domestic Violence) that my professional practice will change forever The course is excellent and taught in a way that is understandable with lots of support from the lecturers who go beyond the call of duty in terms of providing support and information Why Postgraduate Level? The NCSPVA believe that all Domestic Violence Workers should be qualified to a professional level which gives them professional recognition and status. 6 Current or ex-university of Worcester students going onto Masters Programmes will have a 10% discount in fees. (Applicants with any gap in study of more than two years are advised to talk to the University finance office to confirm their eligibility to receive the discount). Payment Options Payment can be made in full, per module or via monthly instalments to the University of Worcester. Students wishing to pay by monthly instalments are advised to notify Finance when registering for the course. Funding Opportunities Employer funding Many employers pay for their staff to attend these courses. Prospective students should discuss this with their employer. Government Professional and Career Development Loan (PCDL) A PCDL is a bank loan to help learners pay for learning that leads to work or career development. Learners can apply for any amount between 300 and 10,000. This can be used to pay course fees and/or other course costs including books, childcare and travel. It is up to the learner to decide how much money they need to borrow. It should be noted though that a learner can only borrow 100% of the course fee if they have been registered as unemployed for at least three months prior to their learning. If a learner has not been registered as unemployed for at least three months, they will be able to borrow 80% of the course fee. Learner applying for a PCDL must be: Aged 18 years old or over at the point of application Been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years prior to the start of the learning programme Intending to work in the UK, the EU or the EEA (European Economic Area) when the course finishes If you would like to apply for a PCDL you should call the National Careers Service on to request an application pack and complete the relevant application form with one of the participating banks. Learners should submit the completed application form to their chosen bank, which will process the form to determine the learner s eligibility for the loan. Please note that the University of Worcester s code for this loan is You will need this for the application form. West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Scholarships The West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner has generously given the NCSPVA 1 fully funded scholarship for the Masters Degree in Professional Development: The Dynamics of Domestic Violence for the last two years. Students may enquire is the scholarship is available for but should note that applicants must be living or working in the West Mercia region.

The Disabled Students Allowance The Disabled Students Allowance is also available for postgraduate students. University of Worcester - Eligible Access to Learning Fund The University of Worcester now has an Access to Learning Fund which is a non-repayable grant administered by The University of Worcester to help eligible students who are experiencing financial difficulties. You must already be a student and have paid part of your fees but can prove that you are having difficulty paying the remainder or finding it hard to find childcare or travel expenses. The amount awarded ranges from 100 to 3,500 but awards above 2,000 are rare.
