1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title PE Teacher / Head of PE and School Sports Team TreeHouse School Job Band Band 6 Reporting to Assistant Head Sports Coaches Hours Hours: Monday Friday pm Flexibility is required in order to meet the varying needs of the school. Line Manages Specialist tutor/s and relevant volunteers as required Approved by: Becky Jones, Headteacher Date: 8 th April 2015 Role Purpose To lead Physical Education and sport across the school Responsible for the planning and co-ordination of sports events and educational visits relating to PE. To ensure outstanding teaching and learning of Physical Education and sport throughout the school through effective delivery of, access to and progression through the personalised curriculum for each pupil. To ensure implementation of learning support strategies and behaviour plans underpinned by the scientific principles of learning and behaviour. To lead the development of an engaging, relevant, functional and challenging Physical Education and school sport curriculum To lead the team of Sports Coaches, extra-curricular staff and volunteers to deliver high quality, varied and stimulating lessons to achieve the objectives of the PE Curriculum which are accessible to all children and young people. Teaching and Learning (School) Key Accountabilities & Dimensions Quality of Teaching Ensure outstanding teaching and learning in Physical Education for pupils through effective multi-disciplinary team working and strategies underpinned by the scientific principles of learning and behaviour. Promote in pupils a love for sport and physical exercise and an awareness of healthy lifestyles Consistently deliver outstanding teaching that ensures pupils make at least expected progress towards their targets. Ensure that your own subject knowledge is thorough and is promoted in class and across the school through subject leadership to engage the interests of pupils in learning.
2 In collaboration with the school leadership teams, ensure that pupils access the timetabled curriculum and that lessons are exciting and challenging and inspire every pupil to develop the key skills required to be an effective learner and achiever. Demonstrate knowledge of how pupils learn and how this impacts on teaching; regularly reflect on teaching, learning and general practice to evaluate the effectiveness of your teaching and any learning supports. In collaboration with the school multi-disciplinary team, and informed by assessment for learning data, make planning accessible and work collaboratively with other adults involved in supporting learning to ensure that pupils make progress towards their medium term targets (identified in Learning Journeys and Teaching and Learning Meetings ) as a result of well managed people, resources and timely support and intervention. Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development Ensure that all pupils access a personalised school PE curriculum, including participation in school events (Sports day etc.), educational visits (weekly and occasional visits) and school visitors that promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. In collaboration with the Behaviour Analyst, evaluate the impact of interventions in relation to pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and report this to the Leadership Team as required. Organise and maintain a teaching and learning environment that promotes pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through display, use of a diverse range of teaching materials, use of paired and small group work and organised play opportunities. Demonstrate an awareness of the spiritual, moral, social, physical and cultural development of each young person and adapt teaching to support pupils education at different stages of development. Meeting Diverse Learning Needs With advice and guidance from the Behaviour Analyst, ensure that all pupils are supported using behavioural approaches to access the broad range of learning activities available to support diversity, inclusion and to challenge pupils learning and development. Promote curriculum continuity, consistency and personalisation, balance, differentiation and progression; taking into consideration pupils prior attainment, individual education plans, pupils with EAL, and gifted and talented pupils. With advice and guidance from the Behaviour Analyst and Allied Health Professionals, ensure that differentiated learning opportunities are in place to support all pupils learning. Drawing down from TreeHouse School PE curriculum, ensure that broad ranges of learning activities are always available to support diversity, inclusion and challenge for all pupils. Write and review risk assessments and arrangements for educational visits as appropriate, including collaborating with the Educational Visits Co-Ordinator in the school and any Teacher/s in Charge to ensure arrangements are in place to facilitate the inclusion of all pupils. Achievements Target setting and pupil progress Follow the school s assessment and recording systems and be able to use assessment data effectively to set clear lesson objectives, weekly objectives and
3 medium term targets in order to raise attainment and ensure maximum progression for all pupils within the class. Responsible for effective and timely home-school communication, ensuring that parents and carers are kept informed and updated about their child s progress (and/or any challenges) and about the contribution they can make in supporting their child s learning. Make accurate and meaningful assessments; track and report on progress e.g. contribute to Annual and Termly reports of pupil progress and to target setting / review of Learning Journeys, ensuring these are written to a high standard and completed to deadline. Be accountable for pupils attainment, progress and outcomes in your class; track whole school progress in PE and sports, using assessment data to inform school development plans and targeted interventions. Encourage pupils to be aware of their targets and how to achieve them. Assist pupils in tracking their own progress and give them regular feedback and reinforcement, through verbal description of their attainment and next steps as well as praise, encouraging and motivating them to use the feedback to inform their learning and progress. Collect, analyse and report on pupils own views of their learning and experience of school. Key responsibilities delegated to this job Leadership and Management Responsibility Responsible for following TreeHouse School and Ambitious about Autism policies and procedures to identify areas of outstanding practice and to fairly and robustly challenge under-performance at all levels including learners and members of staff, and in collaboration with senior or middle leadership, put in place effective intervention programmes to keep performance on track. Lead on the introduction of inter-school sports events, including promoting opportunities for pupils to engage in competitive and community sports events Ensure Sports Coaches under your responsibility are effectively led and performance managed. Responsible for ensuring that the Senior Leadership Team receive the right information at the right time relating to appraisals and assessments. Responsible for agreeing, managing, monitoring, and reporting on budgets as delegated. Contribute to school projects and programmes identified to develop the school to achieve its overall aims and objectives, plans and policies. Responsible for providing lunchtime supervision which may include lunchtime clubs, and activities and inclusion opportunities with local schools Undertake any other appropriate responsibilities and duties that may arise. Safeguarding, Safety and Behaviour Ensure that all Sport Community trips are risk assessed, that emergency plans are in place and reviewed regularly. Ensure that you are aware of and compliant with each pupil s Positive Handling Plans, TreeHouse School policies and guidance around best practice in relation to Positive Handling and Health and Safety.
4 Ensure that the school environment is well managed and resources used efficiently and safely. Responsible for accurate reporting and recording of all matters relating to Health and Safety and pupil welfare in accordance with TreeHouse School and Ambitious about Autism policies. Responsible for applying the principles of the Mental Capacity Act and child/vulnerable Adult Protection requirements in your work. Provide personal care as required (e.g. toileting, nappy changing, feeding) for pupils where necessary. Responsible for accurate reporting and recording of pupil attendance and punctuality Ensure safe working practices are followed at all times. Ensure that safeguarding incidents, concerns in relation to dispensing medication, other incidents and accidents are appropriate reported. PERSON SPECIFICATION Role and Band Competencies Essential Desirable Education Levels & Qualifications 1. Qualified Teacher Status and experience working as PE teacher 2. Teacher Reference Number (previously referred to as GTC Registration Number) 3. Specific sports related qualifications Specific Knowledge, Experience & Technical Skills 4. Experience of teaching PE in primary and/or secondary school. 5. Experience of teaching children and or young people with special needs. 6. Experience of leading development of PE and sports curriculum, including planning and preparing a wide range of ability and age appropriate learning opportunities and activities. 7. Experience of developing and/or implementing effective assessment strategies and processes to ensure that pupil s attainment informs planning, target-setting and reporting. 8. Good understanding of health and safety in the context of Physical Education and sports. 9. Demonstrable understanding of safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. 10. Good appreciation of health and safety in the workplace, E-Safety and Data Protection Principles and equal opportunities.
5 11. Experience of teaching children and young people with autism. 12. First aid qualification current certificate. 13. Hold a current and full UK driving licence category B 14.
