6 Master of Business Administration Objectives Global markets, a constantly changing business environment, international projects and innovative information and communication technologies are factors that are posing completely new challenges for companies and their staff. To deal with these challenges and to ensure long-term corporate success requires managers who possess extensive management, social and personal competencies in an international context. The MBA program in International Project Management is designed to enable executive personnel to use the methods and tools to fulfil the requirements they need to compete in the project orientated business environment. 6

7 International Project Management (IPM) PROJECT MANAGEMENT A special feature of the program International Project Management is its symbiosis of management and Project Management in an international and intercultural context. The increasing dependency of the success of a company on projects makes project management competencies to the key success factor in the future. The modern project manager as an entrepreneur requires capabilities in the area of Project Management methodology, information technology as well as leadership competencies. These topics are extensively covered during the project management modules in the program and will be directly applied in real projects in the 4th term. The course is certified by the GPM (German Association for Project Management e.v.) with a Certificate of Excellence which confirms that the content of the course is in accordance with the rules and guidelines of PM-ZERT and the IPM Competence Baseline (ICB 2.0b) of the International Project Management Association (IPMA). 7

9 International Project Management (IPM) GENERAL MANAGEMENT The program follows a General Management approach. It covers all core business administration areas: Accounting, Economics, Finance, Human Resources, Operations Management, Marketing, Strategy and IT Management. It provides an indepth knowledge of modern management for non-business degree holders like engineers, IT experts, social sciences graduates, doctors and lawyers. You will be provided with the know-how in order to succeed in management positions by understanding business issues and by applying state-of-theart management tools. 9

10 Master of Business Administration INTERNATIONAL MANAGEMENT All future management behaviour needs to be directed towards competing on the international markets. Exporting high quality goods and services is already one of the major pillars of the German economy. The MBA program prepares you to communicate and work in an international business environment. This is done through a variety of measures and activities. First, the majority of courses have a special focus on international management. After providing a general introduction to the topic they explain how the different theories and tools are relevant for managing international businesses. Second, most courses are in English. All candidates, especially those with medium levels of English language proficiency, improve their language skills dramatically during the program. Third, there is a significant exposure to other cultures. A course about Cross-Cultural-Behavior is taught to prepare you for intercultural communication. There are several international lecturers in the program and students from different countries. Two major courses will be taught during the two-week international module which takes place at the University of Cape Town in South Africa or at the California State University in Los Angeles, USA. These modules offer you a unique experience and an outstanding mixture of learning and intercultural encounters in a fascinating environment. 10

12 Master of Business Administration BUSINESS MEDIATION (Certified Business Mediator - FHK) As a special feature the course integrates a certification in Business Mediation. Business Mediation is a process for resolving disputes between stakeholders in a business. As a trained mediator you facilitate a conversation between the parties, identify the interests and critical needs of each party, and help the parties to develop acceptable solutions. Success as a project manager only partly consists of applying functional and management knowledge. To achieve the objective of a successful and long-lasting career a manager needs to develop his social competencies and to grow his personality. The program offers highly valuable opportunities to achieve personal growth. Personal and social competencies are covered in regular lectures like Cross Cultural Behavior, Business Communication and International Human Resources. 12 To get the permission to the certification exams (Certified Business Mediator FHK) the participants have to choose electives and take part in an additional seminar week in the 4th term. The integration of project management and Business Mediation in a MBA-program is unique in Germany and contributes to the problem solving and negotiation competence a project manager requires in daily work.

15 International Project Management (IPM) APPLICATION The MBA program is an extremely practical and problem-oriented course of study. Course members already have experience working in a wide range of different professions & industries and the methodology employed in teaching and learning reflects the practical nature of the course, e.g. case studies, interactive communication in small groups, project work in teams and cooperation with companies on specific consulting tasks. The structure of the MBA course enables you to apply what they have learnt to practical situations. The transfer phases back in the company offer course members the opportunity to investigate whether aspects studied in the classroom can be realised in their day-to-day professional life, and to bring back problems and questions to the next teaching block. 15

Our MBA program is accredited from the Ministry of Science and Technology of Bavaria as well as from the Foundation of International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA). All lecturers are outstanding professionals or academics. The lectures are evaluated and continuously improved. Lecturers have to follow quality standards and students are supported by structured guidelines, e.g. how to write a master thesis. 23 International Project Management (IPM) PART TIME SCHEDULE The structure of our program is fully focussed on enabling participants to study while holding a challenging full time job. Our model is an ideal mixture of pedagogically valuable week-long learning modules as well as job-tailored weekend modules. The course can be attended with or without support from the employer. The eight block-weeks and weekend (mostly Friday afternoon and Saturday) seminars (plus virtual course components) mean that you can complete the course during your annual holidays and other free time, while still following your career and being able to maintain a work-study-life balance. In the event that you are unable to attend seminars for professional, family or personal reasons, the courses can be retaken during a subsequent semester. The course lasts four semesters (24 months) on a part-time basis. The last semester is mainly used to write the Master Thesis. The time structure of the course is as follows: 1st Semester (October to March): Two block-weeks in October and five weekends spread through the semester. In addition, further home study will be needed for virtual study components. Exams are by mid March. 2nd Semester (April to September): Two block-weeks at the foreign partner university in April/May. Three weekends in May and June. Exams are in late July. 3rd Semester (End of September to March): One block-week at the end of September, one block-week at the beginning of January (including January 6th) and five weekends spread through the semester. In addition further home study will be needed for the virtual study component. Exams are by mid March. 4th Semester (April to September): One block-week in April and one weekend in May. During this semester you will prepare your thesis. If you want to do the Certification in Business Mediation you have to participate in a weekly course as a special preparation for the certification. 24 Master of Business Administration HOW TO JOIN The MBA starts each year in October. Application forms can be found on our MBA Homepage ( Applications can be sent in until July 31. As the seminars are conducted in English, participants will need a good level of proficiency in the English language. Applicants for the MBA course must have successfully completed a degree-level course of study at a university or equivalent institute of higher education, e.g. polytechnic, Fachhochschule or Berufsakademie (only in Baden-Würtemberg), and require a minimum of two years employment in a suitable management position. All courses take place at the modern facilities of the University of Applied Sciences in Kempten, Germany. You have to take care about your own travel and accommodation arrangements but can get some support by the University. 24
