2 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE SOCIETY OF MARITIME INDUSTRIES MERCURE HULL ROYAL HOTEL, 170 FERENSWAY, HULL HU1 3UF Wednesday 17 & Thursday 18 February 2016 I am delighted to invite you once again to the forthcoming annual conference of the Society of Maritime Industries. It will be held next spring in the city of Kingston-upon-Hull which has a rich historical association with the maritime world. The title UK Maritime Engineering: Exploring Business Opportunities in a Diverse Sector reflects the region s fast developing range of industrial and maritime engineering businesses. The Humber Estuary, boasting no less than six ports, Hull, Grimsby, Immingham, New Holland, Goole and Killingholme, is the UK s No.1 port network and is at the heart of Britain s international trade. The region is also home to the construction and support of the largest offshore wind farms in the world. The conference programme has been designed to draw together three topical themes on maritime engineering which provide opportunity for the UK s design and manufacturing capabilities: the development of maritime autonomous systems, the support of maritime engineering offshore and the naval procurement programmes emerging from the forthcoming strategic defence and security review. The many issues these themes embrace will be addressed by some of the most experienced high profile speakers in the industry. As a precursor to the start of the conference, visits have been arranged to three different local sites of maritime and industrial engineering interest. The event also includes a structured programme of one-to-one meetings between delegates participating in the conference. The conference networking reception and dinner will be held at The Deep, the world renowned aquarium with its unique collection of live fish, mammals and crustaceans presented in a visually stunning three level glass tank. 3 TWO DAY CONFERENCE PROGRAMME The Mercure Hull Royal Hotel, 170 Ferensway, Hull, HU1 3UF Conference Chairman Rear Admiral Terry Loughran had a distinguished career as a pilot in the Royal Navy rising to professional head of the Fleet Air Arm. He has commanded a variety of ships including the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal and as a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society has consulted on a number of projects, including the future aircraft carriers. A keen yachtsman and motor cycle enthusiast he now enjoys a thriving career chairing conferences and as an after dinner speaker. Wednesday 17 February Delegates register with organising staff at the Mercure Hull Royal Hotel for one of the optional visits to either the Drax Power Station or the Scunthorpe Steel Mills or the Port of Immingham.
