2 02 Management and executive careers for military officers The Advanced Management Achievement Course or AMAC is an accredited management development programme designed specifically for middle and senior ranking officers looking to move into a new career in non-military organisations. AMAC is a well established and highly regarded programme. It has been running since 1993 and MBS has worked with over 1,000 officers to expand their leadership skills for the commercial world. Making the move into the business world isn t easy. The expertise and skills you ve developed in the military need to be refined and honed to fit the commercial environment. Through highly practical, interactive sessions, tutors who are experts in their fields and workshops focused specifically on your group s needs, you ll develop the confidence and additional management tools to take the next step in your career. AMAC provides the knowledge, hands-on expertise and relevant experience of the ever-changing business world which is essential to make your transition a success. Could you benefit from the programme? Previous participants now have thriving careers in areas as diverse as not-for-profit organisations, commercial businesses and consultancy. AMAC has helped them achieve high-level managerial and board-level positions such as Senior Manager, Operations Director, Managing Director, Chief Executive and Chairman in a diverse range of high profile organisations. Others have gone on to set up their own companies working as business advisors, career portfolio specialists and even as consultants across the commercial, public and voluntary sectors. Who should attend? The programme is intended to support the ranks of Major, Lieutenant Commander, and Squadron Leader or above. However, graduate entry officers with the rank of Captain, Lieutenant (RN), or Flight Lieutenant may also apply. What are the aims of the programme? The programme aims to act as a springboard to further develop your existing expertise ready for a non-military career. It will provide an overall understanding of the business environment and help you understand business language. The sessions will help you develop your planning for the open job market and reinforce your business confidence. The programme is designed to develop the following: an in-depth understanding of how business operates the skills to communicate effectively in this environment an appreciation of marketing in both service and industrial contexts an appreciation of how to develop business strategy the ability to comprehend and use financial data experience of the cutting edge thinking of experts in their fields a powerful network of fellow participants to call upon in your new career the confidence to seek an executive or managerial role in any business.

4 04 About the programme The programme examines key business themes to prepare delegates with a full picture of the economic environment. Before the programme It is important to know that AMAC is an intensive three week programme with a typical day of hrs (1500hrs on Fridays). Your weekends will include study, research and reflection time to support the next week s sessions. All participants have 24hr computer access for research and membership of the School s comprehensive library is also provided. The programme is fully residential. The fifteen day package (Sunday to Friday) is standard, and a 19 day package, including weekends is also available. En-suite, single study bedrooms with TV, radio, private telephone and tea and coffee making facilities are provided. Programme content The programme examines key business themes to prepare delegates with a full picture of the economic environment. These topics include: Strategy, Marketing, Human Resources, Economics, Financial Accounting and Management, Business Management including Change Management and topical business issues. In the first week an overview is given of the basic concepts within each subject area. During the second week ideas are further developed and an understanding of their application to business discussed. During the third week the relevance of pre-course knowledge and course learning within the business context is more fully realised, and the application of ideas by business managers in management situations is explored. Access to structured industrial research together with organised visits provides essential learning in an environment which is ideal for the transition to a nonmilitary management career. The teaching style is open and proactive with a mixture of lectures, tutorials, case studies, group work and research time.

Economics The macro-economic background - an introduction to the economic and commercial system of the UK Implication of the European Economic and Monetary Union - insight into the impact of the Euro on politics and global trade Prospects for the UK economy - analysis of recent and current performance in the UK economy. Financial Accounting Key concepts in understanding finance Accounts for management - analysis of financial information used by management Financial evaluation of companies - describes methods for analysing company accounts. Business Management Industrial research visit (pre-arranged company visit to suit each delegate s choice) Overview of the legal, tax and financial framework Introduction into the world of small business Development of the business planning process The dynamics of change management Business simulation - an effective learning experience for managers who wish to develop their professional skills.
