8 TRUE COLOURS UEA ENGINEERING ACADEMICS ARE DEVELOPING A RADICAL NEW APPROACH THAT COULD CHANGE THE FUTURE OF PRINTING. BY USING VOLTS INSTEAD OF PUMPS WE CAN NOW ACHIEVE ONCE UNIMAGINABLE PRECISION. HOW COULD YOU CHANGE THE FUTURE? UEA s Dr Matthew Alexander is researching a powerful new method of printing called electrospray that works by applying a high voltage to a specially engineered capillary, instead of using physical pumps. Not only is the method more cost-effective, but it can be fine-tuned to produce images of incredible accuracy. The pioneering technique can produce individual dots of only one micron in size, with exciting prospects for hyper-realistic printing, amazingly responsive touch-screens and a huge range of other future technologies. Our engineering academics conduct research at the intersection of various disciplines, finding hi-tech solutions to major scientific problems. We ve got experts in everything from graphene to computational modelling who work with colleagues in many of UEA s other prestigious Schools to address topics like climate change, fluid dynamics and biochemical research.
