2 Why Sweden? All three of Sweden s most populated cities are on Forbes World's 15 Most Inventive Cities list. It doesn't take long to rattle off a list of Swedish startups or tech companies that are either in or heading toward the billion dollar valuation club: music streaming site Spotify AB, payment service Klarna AB, games maker Mojang AB, voice-over-ip company Skype, games maker King.com and from earlier Internet times business intelligence service Qlik Technologies Inc., Internet marketing company Tradedoubler AB and database MySQL. For a country of 9.5 million people, Sweden attracts more than its fair share of venture money. According to data from the European Private Equity and Venture Capital Association, Swedish hi-tech firms attracted 108 million ($139 million) in venture investment in 2012, behind France ( 140 million), Germany ( 176 million) and the U.K. ( 253 million), but considerably more than Spain ( 70 million), Europe's fifth-largest economy. It also dwarfs its Nordic neighbours Denmark ( 51 million), Norway ( 55 million) and even tech hot spot Finland ( 41 million). Kista Science City They call it Wireless Valley, Mobile Valley or the Silicon Valley of the North. Its formal name is Kista Science City, located in north-west Stockholm. It s where you ll find many of the world s foremost ICT* companies, gathered together to take advantage of Sweden s strong position in mobile communications. Kista Science City is one of the world s leading high-tech clusters. Figures show that few places on the planet can demonstrate the same high concentration of expertise, innovation and business opportunities within ICT. The Kista urban area is Sweden s biggest corporate centre and important to the national economy. Here are more companies and employees within a limited space than anywhere else in the country. Of the nearly 28,000 employees in some 750 Kista companies, two-thirds work in the ICT sector. Ericsson has its head office in Kista and is the largest single employer with a staff of more than 9,000. Kista Science City is located centrally in the Stockholm region, 15 minutes from Central Station on the underground railway and 15 minutes from the main Stockholm airport at Arlanda. It also has the advantage of being close to Sweden s financial centre in central Stockholm. Companies and researchers are found along the entire value chain within wireless systems, mobile services and broadband systems - the three strategic areas for Kista Science City.
