2 2 WHO IS PROTEIN? Protein produces dance theatre performances which examine human relationships, everyday life and issues, searching for the potential absurdity lying therein. Working with a blend of drama, humour and high octane movement, Protein Dance borrows from influences that stretch from reality TV shows to family life, health farms and nature documentaries. Protein holds up a mirror to our lives, revealing ourselves, warts and all. Under the artistic direction of Italian born choreographer Luca Silvestrini, has won awards for its work and been acclaimed in the national press. Their last production Dear Body (2009) was described by The Times as extremely clever and constantly entertaining. Protein also breaks down barriers and perceptions about what dance should be, and positively engages with audiences new to dance. You don t have to be a dance fan to enjoy Protein s performances. Protein is a company I would certainly take a non-dancer friend to see" (Dance Europe). 2
3 3 WHAT S LOL (lots of love)? Logging on to our lives online, LOL (lots of love) delves into the world of electronic communication to uncover the evolutionary shift that social networking and the internet are having upon the way we live, love one another and belong to society in general. With video animation by Rachel Davies, lighting by Jackie Shemesh cocreators of Protein s Dear Body - and with original music by Andy Pink, LOL mixes social comment, provocative humour and engaging performances from six highly articulate dancers. LOL is touring England and Wales in January April 2011 and there is a range of special dance theatre activities in schools thematically linked to the production. They are available only to performance attenders purchasing special joint workshop/performance tickets and offer participants the opportunity to see an amazing new show from a celebrated company and have the work revealed to them in a deeper way through hands-on activity. 3
4 4 PROTEIN S EDUCATION POLICY Placing human expression and interaction at the very roots of dance, Protein believes that dance theatre has the power to speak and connect with a large number of people, even those who have never experienced dance or theatre before. Protein aims to: Present dance as an integral part of our contemporary life, drawing together performance and participatory activities as a means of expressing and exploring the human condition and the individual s responses to the complex and exciting world we live in; Provide an inspiring special adventure playground for creative movement ideas in which the company encourages self-expression, communication, team work and imagination in a fun, social and noncompetitive way; Develop movement and physical awareness. Develop a greater understanding of fitness, healthy body and mind. Widen accessibility to and encourage participation in dance. 4
5 5 INGREDIENTS OF A PROTEIN EDUCATION PROJECT Protein s approach to teaching aims at creating a friendly and creative atmosphere between participants and teachers and at generating a genuine sense of play from the beginning. Devised specifically for every particular group we work with, all our education events encourage bodily and spatial awareness, group interaction and exploration of movement qualities and ideas attached to a particular theme/subject (eg from the company s performance repertory). A colourful use of imagery, sounds, games, emotions and familiar situations stimulates and enriches each participant s imagination and access to the theme. Starting with an appropriate warm-up designed to introduce physical and thematic ingredients of the workshop while preparing the body for work, each session follows a creative process that allows the participants to explore, devise and perform original movement and theatrical ideas. Short group discussions are instigated at different stages of the session, while a final evaluation aims at developing skills of critical appreciation. Facilitated by excellent dancers and teachers, seeding inventive, imaginative dance activities in a relaxed, lively, social atmosphere, Protein s education events are designed to promote personal creative discoveries, dance-theatre making skills and a sense of enjoyment in simply taking part. All Protein education events aim to: provide a creative learning experience for our clients; develop individual movement vocabulary sourced from recognisable gesture, and everyday situations develop confidence encourage self-expression, develop problem-solving skills encourage a love and enjoyment of dance-theatre develop social interaction and awareness of self in relation to one another 5
6 6 DANCE IN EDUCATION Dance or Physical Theatre workshops (GCSE Dance and PE and A Level Dance and Performing Arts) 1-3 hours Using a careful blend of creative facilitation and teacher led activities, Protein will lead workshops that explore a theme from LOL (lots of love) to develop students dance skills, contact work and choreographic techniques. The main emphasis is on creativity but, where appropriate, aspects of repertory will be delivered to further develop individual style and vocabulary. All workshops link into the 3 components highlighted in the National Curriculum of COMPOSING, PERFORMING and APPRECIATING. Offering a further service, Protein dancer-teachers can advise on choreography and making work, providing assistance to students working on exam solos or group dances at GCSE, AS and A Level. 7 7 Taster workshops or short intensives with Hard to Reach Young People 2 hours 2 days Protein offers dance projects for young people excluded from mainstream education in a number of different settings, including pupil referral units and children s hospital wards. Working with small groups, the dancer/teachers use a flexible teaching approach and focus on developing self-esteem, building confidence, trust and team building. Moving between dance and theatre tasks based on the themes of LOL lots of love, participants will be carefully led through self-exploration, expression and discovery in a fun and inclusive atmosphere. Creative problem solving activities and games will help to build personal confidence, respect for the others and stronger relationships. "We work with many of the students from the Pavilion. That was one of the best pieces of work I have seen and the benefits and sense of achievement have remained. Our dance teachers can support the dance curriculum to meet your specific needs, employing the techniques they use in creating dance for LOL (lots of love). With particular attention paid to working with improvisation and creating an original and meaningful movement vocabulary, this session will give students the opportunity to learn Protein s creative approach, while experimenting with their own findings. 8 8 WORKSHOP REQUIREMENTS Where possible, the workshop space needs to be: A minimum size of 25ft x 25 ft (7.5m X 7.5m) Clear, well lit and warm with a clean floor Preferably a sprung or semi-sprung floor Equipped with a music system and c.d. player The company needs access to the space at least 15 minutes beforehand Workshop participants should know the following: They should wear loose, comfortable clothing. All jewellery needs to be removed for safety purposes Participants will need to bring drinking water We prefer to limit numbers of participants in the workshops to suit the size of the space but our maximum number is around 30 where there are two Protein teachers or 20 if there is one. The company requires information in advance of the workshop to include: Names and addresses of all of all the workshop venues Contact name and telephone number for each workshop The number of participants The age ranges The ability ranges and description of experience Any behavioural issues Any relevant medical conditions The times of the workshops (to include break times if appropriate) When working in schools Protein Dance requires: A teacher to be in attendance for the entire workshop for legal reasons 8
