Syllabus NanoTECH Course title: NanoTECH Nanotechnology in Germany: Implementing Science, Research and Technology in Germany Today Catalog description: Technology and research in Germany and Europe today, direct on-site contact with German research centres, direct conversations with leading scientists around Germany in charge of planning today s research agenda, direct hands-on experience with several laboratory projects themed along nanotechnology. Required texts: Course-packet provided in class. Reference texts: (none) Course coordinator: Dr. Matthew Grayson (Northwestern Univ.), Prof. Paolo Lugli, Prof. Gloria Kim, Zafer Sen Course goals: Nanotechnology: This course will give students an overview of the technological landscape of Germany, with an emphasis on nanotechnology centres. Laboratory projects related to nanotechnology will be performed in groups with German students. Excursions to industrial sites and research laboratories will lead to a deeper understanding of Germany s position in the technological world. An introduction to German academic and research environments will deepen awareness of international industrial and scientific collaboration in the modern market. Lectures on intercultural communication and project management will be combined with first-hand visits to technology centres like General Electric Renewable Energy, the EU Patent Office, and Attocube, as well as visits to academic research centres such as the Max-Planck-Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart and the Center for NanoScience at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München. Such visits will be highlight topics covered in the lecture course, NanoSCI. (Specific site visit locations are subject to change each year.) Electrical Engineering: Quantum Electronics Materials Science: Quantum Materials Physics: Quantum Mechanics Chemistry, Chemical Engineering: Quantum Chemistry Computer usage: None Homework assignments: Lab assignments, written research reports on site visits. Projects: The students will work with groups of German students on one laboratory project relevant to the fabrication and/or characterization of nanostructures. Students will be able to choose from a variety of lab topics, such as quantum transport through antidots, electron spin resonance, molecular motors, lasers, field effect transistors, electron spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, diamond field effect transistors. Each laboratory project will be written up as a lab report for evaluation. In addition, the students will also write reports on technology practises observed at several of the sites in Germany visited during this course.

Be specialized in a specific subfield of technology or nanotechnology as demonstrated by written and oral report List centres of modern technological development in Germany, and name leading scientists and research programs at those institutions. Describe areas of focused activity relating to state-of-the-art technology and nanotechnology. Describe how developments subfields in nanotechnology are interrelated. Explain and take advantage of career opportunities in technological centres in Germany and Europe. 3. Syllabus German language course Course title: German language and culture Catalog description: The ability to use German for communicative purposes provides students with a greater access to German culture. A comfortable working knowledge of German and a familiarity with German culture prepare the students for an increasingly international working environment. Required texts: text books provided in class. Reference texts: (none) Course coordinator: Zafer Sen, (TUM) Course goals: German language The intensive language course includes a total of 50 lecture hours. In addition to the language, the participants get insight into German culture. In the beginning of the course, the students take a placement test, according to which they will be placed in the right level.
5 In the beginners' language course (Elementary I/ - A1/1), students learn to communicate in basic German about topics such as introducing themselves, talking about their families and their home country, as well as their studies and hobbies. They also learn to read short authentic texts in German from newspapers and books and to write s. They learn to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. More advanced learners (Elementary II - A1/2) are trained to participate in discussions about topics of their choice and to read longer news articles. They deepen their knowledge of the German grammar and learn to write texts about different topics. They are introduced to German culture, history and everyday life by reading and discussing these topics. They practice to introduce themselves and others and to ask and answer questions about personal details such as where you live, people they know and things they have. They learn to interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help. Depending on the knowledge of the participants, we will offer more advanced levels as well. none Homework assignments: written assignments and articles for course diary Written and oral exam Participation Depending on the course level, s/he should be able to: Level A1 - understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete topic. - introduce him/herself and others and ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. - interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help
