1 10-14 September 2014 The 2014 annual meeting of the Academy, previously planned to take place in Jerusalem, will now take place in the beautiful city of Budapest. 2 Conference Program Wednesday 10 th September pm 5pm Panoramic Visit of Budapest $30 This tour by coach will cover the most remarkable and historic sights of Pest and Buda, such as the beautiful Heroes Square with the Millennium Monument and its museums, the city park, St. Stephen s Basilica and the Andrassy Avenue (UNESCO World Heritage site). A highlight of the tour is a visit to the famous Fisherman s Bastion, where we will enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the city. We will also visit the impressive Matthias church. This gothic church is a symbol of liberty and independence for all Hungarians. 2pm 5pm Walking Tour of the Jewish Quarter for Fellows & Guests $35 At one time, Budapest had a bustling Jewish population of more than two hundred thousand people. Many of them lived in a geographically well-defined area still referred to as the Jewish quarter. During this tour, you will learn of the tragic history of this area during World War II and also experience the beauty and memories of a community that is alive and thriving again. Its unique interior decorations and frescos with Neo Renaissance style will charm you. The stairway and auditorium were designed by Miklos Ybl, a leading architect of the period. The first performance was held in 1884 and Puccini staged premiers of two of his operas here. Beyond admiring the beauty of the building you will gain insight into the work of the house as the decisions and laws passed here impact everyday life of Hungarian society. After leaving the parliament building, we will stop at the Gellert Hill for magnificent views of the city. Then we end our tour at the Great Market Hall, the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest. It was established in 1910 by Karoly Gundel who refined the Hungarian cuisine and created delicious dishes of his own taste. The current cuisine is still based on Gundel s recipes and standards.
