4 Welcome The world s most famous monument, Liberty Enlightening the World The Statue of Liberty, this most American of Americans, was herself an immigrant. In 1865 a group of French intellectuals led by Édouard de Laboulaye, protesting what they saw as political repression in their own country, decided to honor the ideas of freedom and liberty with a symbolic gift to the United States. The time was right; the Civil War was over, slavery was abolished, and the nation looked towards its centennial. Nationalism, prosperity and new technology brought forth an era of monumental building. Auguste Bartholdi, Laboulaye s young sculptor friend, seized the chance to create a modern-day colossus. Twenty-one years later and an ocean away, Liberty Enlightening the World stood complete in the New York Harbor.

8 Through america s gate More than one hundred million Americans can claim ancestors who came through Ellis Island. Ellis Island, the immigrant station, opened on December 17, Five years later the wooden structure burned, along with many immigrant records. On December 17th, 1900, a new fireproof French Renaissancestyle building welcomed 2,251 arrivals. Ferries and barges brought steerage passengers out to Ellis from steamships. In the Registry Room, inspectors questioned each individual. Included among the twenty-nine questions were name, hometown, occupation, destination and amount of money they carried. One third stayed in New York City; others headed elsewhere. Only one to two percent were denied entry. One in four Americans can trace their ancestry through the Golden Doors of Ellis Island.

16 aqs What are the costs for an event? A special use permit fee paid directly to the National Park Service. Rates are determined by the NPS and are based upon your impact to the monument: i.e. number of guests, length of event, etc. How do I get to the Island(s)? Statue Cruises is the exclusive provider of transportation to Liberty and Ellis Islands from Battery Park, NYC or Liberty Statue Park, NJ. This fee is based on the number of people and length of use, and is paid directly to Statue Cruises. The ride is under 15 minutes Is there an exclusive caterer? Evelyn Hill Inc. is the authorized concessionaire for the National Park Service and approved outside caterers are recommended by EHI. Only approved caterers will be permitted on the Islands. Can I bring in an outside caterer? Yes, an outside caterer is permitted upon the approval of Evelyn Hill Inc. A management fee will be charged based on the event specifications and impact on the Islands. Do my guests need to go through Security? Whether leaving from Battery Park, NYC or Liberty State Park, NJ, your guests will be required to go through airport-style security with a metal detector. Keeping America s iconic parks safe. What types of events are permitted on Ellis and Liberty Islands? All events must be approved by the National park Service. Fundraisers, Corporate Dinners, Company Outings, Black-Tie Affairs, Wedding Ceremonies, Wedding Receptions, Concerts and Product Launches have all taken place on the Islands.

17 Are there smoking areas on the Islands? Both Islands do permit smoking outside in designated areas on the grounds. What time can my evening event start and end? After daily operating hours, which vary depending upon the season. This ranges between a closing time of 5:00 and 6:15 pm. Event usually end no later than 11:30 pm, pending National Park Service approval. What is the National Park Service involvement in my event? The National Park Service manages both Liberty and Ellis Islands. They must approve everything that occurs during your event; including date, number of guests, schedule and flow. Their approval is obtained through submitting a National Park Service application along with $75 application fee. Upon the approval of the National Park Service, a Special Use Permit will be issued for your event.

18 Is a deposit required to hold an event date? Complimentary event holds can be placed but must be met with approval by the National Park Service to confirm the event. Upon approval by the NPS, Evelyn Hill Inc. will issue a food and beverage contract requesting 25% deposit upon signing, an additional 25% three months prior, and final payment completed no less than 5 business days prior to the start of the event. Can I employ any vendor I like? Evelyn Hill Inc. must approve all vendors. This is due to the difficult acoustics, limited facilities and tight window of time for set-up. If a vendor is not approved by Evelyn Hill Inc. they will be denied entry to the Islands. We strongly suggest using a recommended vendor from our approved list, who is familiar with the logistics on both Liberty and Ellis Islands, and has worked here before. What about decor? Centerpieces may not be built on-site. They must arrive at the Islands ready for placement. What do I do about rental equipment? Party Rental Ltd. is our exclusive equipment rental provider. Will I be required to sign a contract and supply insurance? All renting parties will be required to sign and comply with the National Park Service Special Use Permit and the Evelyn Hill Inc. Event Contract. An insurance certificate for $1 million worth of liability coverage naming the National Park Service and Evelyn Hill Inc., as additional insured is required.
