Setting a BANDIT Device Up as a Terminal Server General Guide A BANDIT device can function as a server to terminal equipment in the network, supporting management of terminal equipment from a remote location. For example, a terminal device that does not have its own IP address can be managed through a BANDIT device that has an IP address. You can connect several such devices to the BANDIT. In this document, we will discuss the BANDIT s support for Encore Networks SignalPath (SP) devices. For a quick, start-up configuration of a BANDIT device as a terminal server, see the ILR-100/ SignalPath Quick Setup Guide. A BANDIT device can have a serial connection to a SignalPath device. Typically, this is through the BANDIT device s DB25 or HD26 serial port (although the BANDIT s Supervisory port and some other ports can also provide serial connections). A cable connects the BANDIT s serial port to a DB9 or DB25 serial port on the SignalPath device. (For details of SignalPath connections, see the document Remote Access to SignalPath Devices.) The BANDIT device is also on an IP network, and thus has an IP address. A remote management terminal, such as a personal computer (PC), can connect to the BANDIT through the network (for example, via Telnet), and can manage remote terminal equipment through the BANDIT device s serial connection to the terminal equipment. Figure 1 illustrates a BANDIT device (in this case, an ILR-100) acting as a server for a terminal SignalPath device (here, an SP201-Z). Figure 1. 2 2 BANDIT Terminal-Server Setup Guide The following BANDIT devices can perform as a terminal server: BANDIT BANDIT II BANDIT III BANDIT IP, with a serial port in the expansion slot BANDIT Mini BANDIT Plus, with or without a Remote Data Unit (RDU) IBR-10 ILR-100 VSR-30, with a serial port in the expansion slot VSR-1200, with one or two RDUs Note: If you would like your BANDIT device to use the terminal-server feature, contact your sales representative at Encore Networks, Inc. The following SignalPath devices may have a serial connection to the BANDIT: SignalPath 201-Z (SP201-Z) SignalPath 201-SA (SP201-SA) SignalPath 201 (SP201) R2Adapter See the following sections for procedures to set up and use the BANDIT as a terminal server: Section A, Configuring the BANDIT Device as a Terminal Server Section B, Verifying the BANDIT Device s Configuration Section C, Connecting to the SignalPath Device through the BANDIT Terminal Server If the BANDIT does not operate as expected after you have performed the procedures in this manual, contact your sales representative at Encore Networks, Inc., or contact Technical Support at support@encorenetworks.com ( ), (fax), or (voice). A Configuring the BANDIT Device as a Terminal Server 1 Connect a serial cable between the PC s COM1 port and the BANDIT s Supervisory port. 2 Open a terminal-emulation program (for example, HyperTerminal). The Exit menu is displayed. Exit Session Y) Yes N) No Are You Sure? : Y 8 Answer y. Ending Session... C Connecting to the SignalPath Device through the BANDIT Terminal Server 1 Make sure there is a serial connection between the BANDIT and the SignalPath. (For information on the SignalPath s serial connection, see the document Remote Access to SignalPath devices.) 2 Make sure the BANDIT is connected to the IP network (through its WAN port). 3 At a remote site, start a new terminal-emulation session (for example, HyperTerminal) to the BANDIT. This will connect via IP. Use the following steps: a If HyperTerminal is already open: On HyperTerminal s top menu, select File, New Connection. 1. An IP connection is generally made from a remote location.

15 BANDIT Terminal-Server Setup Guide 15 The Connection Description window is displayed (as shown after Step 3b). b If HyperTerminal is not already open: In Windows, select Start, Programs, and select the HyperTerminal program. The Connection Description window is displayed. c Type a name for the connection; then select OK. The Connect To window is displayed.

16 16 BANDIT Terminal-Server Setup Guide d In the Connect using field, make sure the connection is TCP/IP. The Connect To window changes its fields, to support parameters for the Internet Protocol. e Enter the BANDIT s IP address.

17 BANDIT Terminal-Server Setup Guide 17 f Make sure you specify port 257 to reach the SignalPath device. Note: To use the BANDIT to manage the SignalPath device, connect to the BANDIT remotely on port 257. To manage the BANDIT itself, connect remotely on port 23. g When you have configured the connection properly, select OK. The management session for the SignalPath device opens (if you specified TCP port 257 in Step 3f).

18 18 BANDIT Terminal-Server Setup Guide 4 Press the Enter key to get the SignalPath device s attention. The SP command prompt is displayed. Note: At this point, you can manage and configure the SP device as described in the Signaling documentation. For example, type help and press Enter to see the commands available for the SP software.

Caution: The BANDIT connection will time out after five (5) minutes of console inactivity. The SignalPath configuration is saved and implemented immediately after each configuration step, so you will not lose any changes in the SP configuration. However, if you have not completed the SP configuration and you leave the console for more than five minutes, the BANDIT connection will close, and you will need to reconnect so that you can finish the SP configuration. In addition, if you are performing a warmstart or a coldstart on the SignalPath, you need to remain at the console until the warmstart or coldstart has completed. 5 When you have finished managing the SP device, you can exit the session. To exit, do the following: a Select File, Exit.

21 BANDIT Terminal-Server Setup Guide 21 The following message is displayed. b To continue exiting, select Yes. If this is a new connection, the system asks if you want to save the connection configuration. c Select Yes. This will make connection with this SP device quicker next time, because you can select the connection name (e.g., remote) from a list. The connection name is saved, and the connection closes.
