1 Music Teachers' Association of California CALIFORNIA PLAN AUDITION INFORMATION & REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS On the Cal Plan Repertoire Approval Form, you will need to list your proposed repertoire for your performance evaluation; the second section of this document provides a full list of acceptable selections for Piano. The criteria listed below must be met in order for your repertoire to be approved for the audition. Once the repertoire is approved, the Cal Plan Chair will make arrangements with you for your evaluation. Repertoire Requirements By Instrument : PIANO 1. Baroque Bach, J.S. - A Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier, Books I or II (except Prelude and Fugue in C Major) 2. Classical One movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven in sonata-allegro form 3. Romantic/Impressionist Any work in this category as listed in the next section th and 21 st Centuries Any work in this category as listed in the next section Works by contemporary pedagogical composers are not acceptable. VOICE 1. Baroque Either an aria by Bach, or an oratorio aria by Handel 2. Classical A Mozart aria 3. Romantic A German lied 4. Impressionistic A French song th and 21 st Centuries A song in the English language VIOLIN, VIOLA, CELLO Required: Four representative works, one each from Baroque, Classical, Romantic/Impressionist, and 20 th and 21 st Centuries, to be selected as follows: Cal Plan Repertoire ( ) (1)

Bach One movement from a concerto or solo with orchestra One movement in sonata-allegro form One additional piece to complete the representation of the four periods of music FLUTE 1. Baroque A multi-movement work 2. Classical One or more movements from one of the Mozart flute concertos 3. Romantic/Impressionist One work th and 21 st Centuries One work CLARINET 1. Classical Two movements from the Mozart Clarinet Concerto 2. Romantic/Impressionist Two movements from a 19 th Century work th and 21 st Centuries Two works of contrasting styles For all other instruments, please contact the State Cal Plan Chair SECTION II: PIANO REPERTOIRE FOR CAL PLAN AUDITION Following is a detailed list of repertoire works for piano which qualify for the Cal Plan Audition (also referred to as the Performance evaluation for Cal Plan membership eligibility). Please note that one piece must be memorized. These repertoire works only apply to the 3 rd and 4 th categories (Romantic/Impressionist) and (20th and 21st Centuries as described below.
